<p>Florence is a treasure trove of culture, history and culinary delights that is truly is a gift that keeps on giving. The more you explore its artistic treasures and small museums the more there is to discover. Yet, when summer arrives, there’s nothing quite like a day at the beach. Whether you’re living in Florence or staying in one of our vacation rentals, don’t forget the beautiful beaches along the Tuscany coastline and just beyond. From the cliff hugging towns of the Cinque Terre to the rugged beaches of Maremma, here are the best beach experiences to enjoy near Florence.</p>
<div id="attachment_63043" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63043" class="size-full wp-image-63043" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/vernazza-sean-sweeney-HC338Uz4zGc-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1122" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/vernazza-sean-sweeney-HC338Uz4zGc-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/vernazza-sean-sweeney-HC338Uz4zGc-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/vernazza-sean-sweeney-HC338Uz4zGc-unsplash-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/vernazza-sean-sweeney-HC338Uz4zGc-unsplash-768x513.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/vernazza-sean-sweeney-HC338Uz4zGc-unsplash-1536x1026.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/vernazza-sean-sweeney-HC338Uz4zGc-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63043" class="wp-caption-text">Vernazza &#8211; one of the Cinque Terre villages. (<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/HC338Uz4zGc">credit</a>)</p></div>
<h2>Cinque Terre – Captivating Colors</h2>
<p>Of course the colorful Cinque Terre needs no introduction. Although located in the region of Liguria, these five famous towns are just beyond the border with Tuscany past La Spezia. At just over a 100 miles from Florence, it&#8217;s possible to enjoy the Cinque Terre on a day trip by train or car. By train it&#8217;s only about 2.5 hours from Florence or 1.5 hours by car to La Spezia, a great jumping off point for exploring the area. Although you can hop from town to town with the 5 Terre Express train (or take a ferry), each town really does beckon you to linger by the sea. Given that each town is more beautiful than the next, you&#8217;ll surely be tempted to stay longer than a day. Find a sunny spot on the beach in Monterosso al Mare, gaze down on the perfect little port of Vernazza and explore the walks between Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t limit yourself to just the Cinque Terre as the entire Ligurian coastline is dotted with beautiful spots like the <a href="https://www.parconaturaleportovenere.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Parco Naturale Regionale di Porto Venere</a>. Or head south to the long, flat and blessedly sandy beaches of Forte dei Marmi. At just over an hour&#8217;s drive, this is one of the quickest and most relaxing beach day trips from Florence.</p>
<div id="attachment_63036" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63036" class="size-full wp-image-63036" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/cala-del-gesso-cristina-gottardi-Me_fSvxfM6I-unsplash.jpg" alt="beach tuscany" width="1680" height="1057" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/cala-del-gesso-cristina-gottardi-Me_fSvxfM6I-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/cala-del-gesso-cristina-gottardi-Me_fSvxfM6I-unsplash-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/cala-del-gesso-cristina-gottardi-Me_fSvxfM6I-unsplash-1024x644.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/cala-del-gesso-cristina-gottardi-Me_fSvxfM6I-unsplash-768x483.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/cala-del-gesso-cristina-gottardi-Me_fSvxfM6I-unsplash-1536x966.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63036" class="wp-caption-text">The rugged coastline at Cala del Gesso. (<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/Me_fSvxfM6I" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<h2>Maremma &#8211; Hit the Tuscan Seaside</h2>
<p>For a quieter seaside experience in Tuscany, put the Maremma on your radar. Stretching along the coastline of southern Tuscany from the town of Cecina and down into the region of Lazio, this rugged coastline is one of the least talked about yet beautiful natural spots in central Italy. Anchored by the city of Grosseto, the Maremma is beautiful to explore especially by car following the meandering coastline. Head to Monte Argentario, a peninsula that juts out from the coastline south of Grosseto where you&#8217;ll find the <em>strada panoramica</em>, a beautiful drive that begins in Porto Santo Stefano around south to Porto Ercole. For nature lovers, spend time exploring the <a href="https://parco-maremma.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Parco Regionale della Maremma</a>. Stop along the way to see little hidden away coves like Cala del Gesso, a pretty beach with a view to a 16th-century tower nearby.</p>
<div id="attachment_63037" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63037" class="size-full wp-image-63037" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/livorno-federico-burgalassi-iKBmhP_6RM0-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="2520" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/livorno-federico-burgalassi-iKBmhP_6RM0-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/livorno-federico-burgalassi-iKBmhP_6RM0-unsplash-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/livorno-federico-burgalassi-iKBmhP_6RM0-unsplash-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/livorno-federico-burgalassi-iKBmhP_6RM0-unsplash-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/livorno-federico-burgalassi-iKBmhP_6RM0-unsplash-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/livorno-federico-burgalassi-iKBmhP_6RM0-unsplash-1365x2048.jpg 1365w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63037" class="wp-caption-text">Livorno&#8217;s Venezia Nuova quarter (<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/iKBmhP_6RM0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<h2>Livorno – A Fascinating Tuscan Port City</h2>
<p>If you enjoy more of a city break than lounging by the beach, check out Livorno, which is a straight shot west of Florence and just south of Pisa. Hop in the car or on the train from Florence’s Santa Maria Novella train station and you’ll be there in only a little over an hour and a half.</p>
<p>When you arrive, you’ll find an <a href="https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20220508-livorno-tuscanys-unattractive-unmissable-town" target="_blank" rel="noopener">intriguing city</a> that was designed during the Renaissance as an “ideal town.” Be sure to visit the impressive checkerboard patterned Terrazza Mascagni, a waterside promenade is perfect for a leisurely seaside stroll. But you’ll also want to explore the 16th-century Fortezza Vecchia and the charming area called <em>Venezia Nuova</em> (New Venice). With its pretty canals and bridges, you’ll quickly understand the name. When it&#8217;s time to eat, head to Piazza Cavalotti where you’ll find the market district and the historic Mercato delle Vettovaglie covered market where you can find the freshest fish or try <a href="https://www.visittuscany.com/en/ideas/tasting-livorno-street-food-chickpea-flatbread-or-torta-di-ceci/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">street food Livorno style</a>.</p>
<p>Ready to hit the beach? Simply head down the coastline from Livorno for beautiful rocky beaches like Calignaia and Cala del Leone or continue on south along the coastline to reach the Maremma.</p>
<div id="attachment_63035" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63035" class="size-full wp-image-63035" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/viareggio-claudio-poggio-0PvfnR3RU6s-unsplash.jpg" alt="beach tuscany" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/viareggio-claudio-poggio-0PvfnR3RU6s-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/viareggio-claudio-poggio-0PvfnR3RU6s-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/viareggio-claudio-poggio-0PvfnR3RU6s-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/viareggio-claudio-poggio-0PvfnR3RU6s-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/viareggio-claudio-poggio-0PvfnR3RU6s-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/viareggio-claudio-poggio-0PvfnR3RU6s-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63035" class="wp-caption-text">Beachside fun in Viareggio. (<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/0PvfnR3RU6s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<h2><strong>Viareggio</strong></h2>
<p>Famous for its massive <a href="https://viareggio.ilcarnevale.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Carnival</a>, the Tuscan seaside city of Viareggio has a long and sandy beachfront lined with <em>stabilimenti balneari</em>. These are the classic Italian beach clubs where you can rent a sunbed and umbrella and spend the day lounging by the sea. It&#8217;s a true Italian experience and ideal if you like a fun and livelier beach atmosphere. Located along the coast between La Spezia to to the north and Livorno to the south, getting there couldn&#8217;t be easier from Florence. By car it&#8217;s a little over an hour and the train will take you to the Viareggio station in less than 2 hours and it&#8217;s about a 20 minute walk from there to the beach.</p>
<div id="attachment_63039" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63039" class="size-full wp-image-63039" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/portoferrario-elba-bjorn-agerbeek-7w9WSJvxSBo-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1101" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/portoferrario-elba-bjorn-agerbeek-7w9WSJvxSBo-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/portoferrario-elba-bjorn-agerbeek-7w9WSJvxSBo-unsplash-300x197.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/portoferrario-elba-bjorn-agerbeek-7w9WSJvxSBo-unsplash-1024x671.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/portoferrario-elba-bjorn-agerbeek-7w9WSJvxSBo-unsplash-768x503.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/portoferrario-elba-bjorn-agerbeek-7w9WSJvxSBo-unsplash-1536x1007.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63039" class="wp-caption-text">Pretty lighthouse in Portoferraio, Elba (<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/7w9WSJvxSBo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<h2>Elba – An Island Escape</h2>
<p>Don&#8217;t think that you have to head to Sardinia or south to Capri for a gorgeous island experience in Italy. This small island is located between Corsica and the Tuscan coastline near Grosseto. A short ferry ride takes you the 6 miles from Piombino to Portoferraio, the largest town on Elba, in just about an hour. Famous as the island of Napoleon&#8217;s exile from 1814-1815, when he arrived he took up residence in Portoferraio. You can visit the Palazzina dei Mulini, one of his official residences on the island, as well as other important sites around the island associated with his brief period of sovereignty.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll want to plan plenty of time to exploring the beaches around the island, which is a part of the <a href="https://www.islepark.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tuscan Archipelago National Park</a>. The sea is brilliant blue and clear and little beaches tucked away in coves make the perfect swimming spots immersed in a natural setting. You&#8217;ll find beaches so beautiful you&#8217;ll wonder how Napoleon ever decided to leave!</p>

<p>While a visit to Florence will definitely involve a spectacular array of museums, shopping and eating, there’s one thing that you can count on being present no matter where you go in the city: great wine. Indeed, with so many great restaurants and wine bars, you&#8217;re never far from a good bottle of wine in Florence, whether you’re staying one of our vacation rentals in the trendy <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/maestro" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oltrarno</a> neighborhood, central <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/florence-piazza-santa-croce.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Santa Croce</a> or a stone’s throw from the fabled <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/s-croce-miravista" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Duomo</a>.</p>
<p>While there’s so much to see and do within the city, there are a number of incredible wineries that are an easy drive away from Florence and could absolutely be reached and enjoyed on a day trip. Many are actually reachable via public transport or offer shuttle services to and from the city so that you don’t have to drive. However, if you are looking for a chance to see the world famous Tuscan countryside, what better way to do it than in pursuit of some of the best wines in the world?</p>

<p>If you’re looking for a wine tasting that won’t take you too far outside of Florence, there’s no better place to start than with the <a href="https://www.antinori.it/en/tenuta/estates-antinori/antinori-nel-chianti-classico-estate/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Antinori Estates</a>, the label behind some of the world’s most well-known Italian wines. The vineyards and wineries are located all over Italy, with the largest concentration around the Chianti region and a few within a short drive from Florence. Not all of them are open to the public, but some have a well organized program of visits and experiences that are easy to book online. The <a href="https://www.antinori.it/en/tenuta/estates-antinori/antinori-nel-chianti-classico-estate/#visite" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Antinori nel Chianti Classico </a>winery is particularly noteworthy, as it is a part of the <a href="https://www.winearchitecture.it/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Toscana Wine Architecture</a> association, which contains wineries that have been designed by renowned architects with a particular eye toward sustainability.</p>
<p>However, if you’re looking to take a quick jaunt in between your morning walk on the Arno and aperitivo in San Frediano, <a href="https://www.antinori.it/it/tenuta/tenute-italia/tenuta-monteloro/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tenuta Monteloro</a> is an Antinori estate located in <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/fiesole-the-crown-of-florence.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fiesole</a>, just outside of Florence.</p>
<div id="attachment_62915" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62915" class="size-full wp-image-62915" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-perfect-chianti-tuscany-winery-sign.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1091" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-perfect-chianti-tuscany-winery-sign.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-perfect-chianti-tuscany-winery-sign-300x195.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-perfect-chianti-tuscany-winery-sign-1024x665.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-perfect-chianti-tuscany-winery-sign-768x499.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-perfect-chianti-tuscany-winery-sign-1536x997.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62915" class="wp-caption-text">Head to Chianti for incredible winery experiences.</p></div>
<p>The wonderful thing about wine tasting around Florence is that you’re nestled in the heart of the Chianti region, with all of the rolling hills and panoramic vistas that you’ve dreamt of seeing for yourself. One way to really immerse yourself in this scenery is to visit one of the towns along the <a href="https://www.visittuscany.com/en/itineraries/a-car-tour-along-the-chiantigiana-road/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chiantigiana</a>, the road that takes you through the entire region and runs from Florence to Siena.</p>
<p>If you’re looking for wineries that are an easy day trip, head to Greve in Chianti, known as the gateway to the area. Situated at the crossroads of major pilgrimage routes, the town has always held an important position in Italian civilization; as a wine producing area, it’s almost unmatched for the number of stunning vineyards that you can visit. First and foremost, Greve in Chianti is the birthplace of the explorer Giovanni di Verrazzano, who discovered the bay of New York. The <a href="https://www.verrazzano.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Castello di Verrazzano</a> is also a place of discovery, especially if you’re looking to navigate their famed cellars. They offer daily wine tours and visits to the wine museum, where there are scores of varieties on offer.</p>
<div id="attachment_62911" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62911" class="wp-image-62911 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte.jpg" alt="wineries" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62911" class="wp-caption-text">Sanforte grapes growing at Villa Calcinaia. <p>The town is a great base for exploring the Chianti region and a well run <a href="https://www.visitchianti.net/municipalities/greve-in-chianti/?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tourism office</a> provides visitors with up-to-date information about transport to and from Florence, wine events and festivals in the region. There is also train and bus service from Florence, making this an easy trip via public transport that allows you to concentrate on the matter at hand: wine tasting. You can also contact some of the larger wineries directly to arrange tastings, visits and meals if you’re looking to stick around a bit longer, and many will have full or half-day experiences.</p>
<div id="attachment_62913" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62913" class="size-full wp-image-62913" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1123" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa-300x201.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa-768x513.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa-1536x1027.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62913" class="wp-caption-text">The Vigna Contessa Luisa at Villa Calcinaia. <p>Visit<a href="https://www.montefioralle.wine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Montefioralle</a> for a tour and tasting from the family who has run the property for generations, which are available by appointment only. Though they don’t serve full meals, the experience of spending time with the family more than makes up for it. If you’re interested in a more extensive menu, <a href="https://www.conticapponi.it/calcinaia/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Villa Calcinaia</a> has a range of options available, all of which are paired with their notable list of Chiantis, Merlots, grappa, and even homemade vinegar. If you’d like to dedicate an entire day to the fine art of wine, visit <a href="https://www.ruffino.it/pages/ruffino-experience" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ruffino</a> in Bagno a Ripoli on your way back to Florence and enjoy tours of the estate, wine tastings and pairings, or full meals in the onsite restaurant.</p>
<div id="attachment_62916" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62916" class="wp-image-62916 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar.jpg" alt="wineries" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62916" class="wp-caption-text">Tour the historic cellar at Badia a Coltibuono. <p>Heading down the Chiantigiana means taking in some of the most breathtaking views in Italy, so if you’re looking to head further south there are also plenty of wineries you can choose as a destination that will make for a fantastic day trip from Florence. The <a href="https://www.ricasoli.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ricasoli</a> winery has been around for a modest one thousand years and sits just near the town of Gaiole in Chianti. While the castle and its grounds are impressive enough, they also offer a range of tours that will satisfy any visitor looking to experience nature, history and, of course, wine. Also in Gaiole in Chianti, <a href="https://www.coltibuono.com/en/wine-tasting-chianti/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Badia a Coltibuono</a>—run by the Stucchi Prinetti family for six generations—offers wine tastings, tours and picnics in the countryside.</p>
<div id="attachment_62909" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62909" class="size-full wp-image-62909" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-tuscany-badia-coltibuono.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1119" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-tuscany-badia-coltibuono.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-tuscany-badia-coltibuono-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-tuscany-badia-coltibuono-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-tuscany-badia-coltibuono-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-tuscany-badia-coltibuono-1536x1023.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-tuscany-badia-coltibuono-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62909" class="wp-caption-text">The historic Badia Coltibuono vineyard. <p>If you’re interested in sustainable wine production, look no further than <a href="https://salcheto.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Salcheto winery</a> in <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/favorite-tuscany-hill-towns.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Montepulciano</a>. This family-run winery proudly claims the title of the first company in the world to have certified the carbon footprint of a bottle of wine. Visits are encouraged and the enoteca offers organic meals straight from their garden.</p>

<p>If you’re not afraid of a slightly longer ride and you’re an architecture buff, then you&#8217;ll want to plan to visit <a href="https://www.castellare.it/en/rocca-di-frassinello/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rocca di Frasinello</a>, the stunning, one-of-a-kind winery designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano. Located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, they offer guided tours and wine tastings, all of which include a visit to the <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/etruscan-history-italy.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Etruscan</a> Documentation center and the nearby necropolis of San Germano, which make this one of the most unique experiences you can have in Italy.</p>

<p>Italy is an ideal destination any time of year, but if you want to immerse yourself in the beauty of the countryside there’s no better time than the later months of the year. That&#8217;s when the rolling hills of Tuscany come alive with vibrant color and sunny days of sightseeing finish in snug evenings beside the fireplace. Fall is harvest season all over Italy, and if you’re in Tuscany you’ll see the grape and olive picking activity, mountains of chestnuts at the local market and restaurant menus boasting fresh truffles on nearly every plate. When the heat of summer subsides, towns and cities around the country come alive with the markets, festivals and activities that Italians themselves love to enjoy. You’ll be far from the madding crowds of summer travel and have the opportunity to experience some of the most beautiful (and delicious!) <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/what-to-eat-in-italy-in-the-fall.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">traditional Italian autumn foods</a>.</p>
<div id="attachment_62170" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/riposo-verde" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62170" class="wp-image-62170 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-riposo-tuscany-autumn.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-riposo-tuscany-autumn.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-riposo-tuscany-autumn-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-riposo-tuscany-autumn-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-riposo-tuscany-autumn-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-riposo-tuscany-autumn-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-62170" class="wp-caption-text">Find the perfect place to stay in Tuscany this autumn</p></div>
<p>Of course, any great holiday starts with the ideal place to rest your head after a day of taking in the sights, and Tuscany has plenty of fantastic options to base yourself and your friends or family during a vacation. With cities like Florence, <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/siena-daytrip-florence.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Siena</a> or Pisa all within driving distance, you’ll have the option of relaxing in the countryside or taking in the culture of some of the most famous landmarks in Italy. And along the way, there’s so much to see that you might just spend the entire day cruising through the incredible landscape of a region that has captured travelers’ imaginations for centuries. After all, it’s not the destination but the journey that counts.</p>

<p>Located in the countryside around Florence, the <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/gabbiano-villa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gabbiano Villa</a> makes getting to the Cradle of the Renaissance a simple affair, with the train station in nearby Figline Valdarno only a few kilometers away. Yet, you may just find yourself too busy wandering the gardens of your villa to notice. The Gabbiano’s manicured property can host up to 10 guests with a private guest cottage giving room for 6 more, and its location on the sumptuous Vecchietto Estate means that you’ll have access to tennis courts, yoga lessons and cooking courses right at your doorstep. However, there is plenty to tempt you out of your nest: the <a href="https://www.virgilio.it/italia/montevarchi/eventi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Valdarno antiques fair</a> comes to Montevarchi on the second Sunday of every month, which is just 15 kilometers from the Villa. For those looking for a little more modern shopping, the <a href="https://luxuryoutletmall.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leccio Outlet</a> offers a full range of luxury and Made in Italy brands that will make your Christmas shopping a breeze. And, of course, both offer international shipping to keep your suitcases from bursting.</p>

<p>Also on the Vecchietto Estate, the <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/tucano-villa-and-cottage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tucano Villa and Cottage</a> is perfect for intimate groups of up to 8 guests in the main house and 3 more in the cottage on the property. The sprawling loggia is perfect for alfresco lunches and the traditional Tuscan style living room comes complete with a working fireplace for crisp autumn evenings, and guests can avail themselves of all of the amenities that the estate offers. Along with its location near the best shopping that Italy offers, the Tucano Villa is close to the famous towns of Greve in Chianti and <a href="https://www.visittuscany.com/en/ideas/5-reasons-visit-gaiole-in-chianti/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gaiole in Chianti</a>, which live up to their names by hosting some of the best wineries and producers in all of Italy. Make a day out of visits to both towns, as one naturally leads to the other, and enjoy the market squares that fill up with organic vegetables and foods from the area.  If you’re in the area in October you may just catch the fabulous <a href="https://eroica.cc/en/gaiole" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eroica</a>, a cycling event that began in Gaiole in Chianti and returns there every autumn. Cheer them on from the sidelines with a glass of Chianti Classico in hand!</p>

<p>Tuscany has so much to offer, and the <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/panorama" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Panorama Villa</a> near Montecatini Terme is the perfect example of the idyllic retreats for which the area is so well known. Overlooking the Val di Nievole, or Valley of the Mists, this villa sleeps up to 12 people and offers add-ons like a personal chef, cooking classes and wine tastings. If you manage to peel your eyes from the panoramic views, you can practice your pizza making skills with the stone oven or cozy up by the fireplace in one of the villa’s living rooms. The rustic character of the property is an ideal place to watch the leaves change around the countryside, and once you return from visiting nearby Pistoia and Lucca, you’ll sleep peacefully under the frescoed ceilings and historic wood beams in the bedrooms. Don’t forget to visit the stone chapel on site, and keep your eyes open for the monument to Victor Emmanuel II, the first King of United Italy who once stayed at the villa.</p>

<p>Southern Tuscany remains one of the most under explored areas in the region, and intrepid travelers are rewarded with authentic cuisine and unspoiled views of the majestic Val d’Orcia. <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/riposo-verde" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Riposo Verde</a> near San Casciano dei Bagni is a restored farmhouse overflowing with the charm and classic beauty of Tuscan living. Plus, its position in between Rome and Florence makes it the ideal place to discover the hidden sights that will surprise even the most seasoned traveler. The fall season is absolutely unmissable in this corner of Tuscany, as you’ll be able to take advantage of the many spas and thermal baths that dot the countryside. The town of San Casciano dei Bagni is named for the baths that date from Roman times, and there are numerous thermal parks to choose from for natural spa treatments or an extended soak. The famed <a href="https://www.visittuscany.com/en/attractions/cascate-del-mulino-hot-springs-in-saturnia/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cascate dei Mulini </a>are one of the most recognizable sights in Italy, and they’re within an hour’s drive of the villa, perfect for a day trip to the southern corner of Tuscany. Spend the day relaxing in the natural pools that the Romans loved and then duck into any of the authentic trattorias around the area, where you’ll find truffles that hunters deliver from their morning walks. There’s no better way to celebrate the fine art of <em>dolce far niente. </em></p>

<p>Tuscany is one of the world’s most desirable destinations, but it is so much more than a spot for a summer holiday. The fall months, when the weather starts to cool and the seasons change, is perhaps the most glorious time to visit the area. Enjoy the scenery and cuisine that make it so famous, and explore the cities that hold the key to Italian history without the rush of crowds and the heat of the summer. For those in the know, autumn in Tuscany is the place to be!</p>

<p>These days while we&#8217;re all dreaming of being able to return to Italy, there&#8217;s one place that&#8217;s especially good at capturing our hearts and imagination: Tuscany. Isn&#8217;t there just something magical about those picture-perfect landscapes of rolling hills dotted with villages, vineyards, and rows of cypress tress? To inspire your future travel plans and keep Italy close to your heart, we&#8217;re sharing 5 of our favorite hill towns in Tuscany. Leave a comment below with your favorite town in Tuscany!</p>
<p><span id="more-61839"></span></p>
<h2>Montepulciano</h2>
<p>Perhaps one of the most quintessential Tuscan towns, Montepulciano beautifully blends medieval elements with an elegant Renaissance style. In the historic center, stop to admire the Palazzo Comunale designed by Michelozzo, which might remind you of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Of course, a visit to Montepulciano isn&#8217;t complete without trying the famous wines from the region like the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG. This entire area is perfect for wine enthusiasts and you can find out more with our <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wine-tours-in-tuscany-4-itinerary-ideas.html">4 Itinerary Ideas for Wine Tours in Tuscany</a>. For a truly unique experience, plan a visit to Montepulciano on the last Sunday in August for the Bravìo delle Botti festival. The 8 historic districts of Montepulciano compete in an intense challenge to roll 176-pound barrels uphill through town. Along with that unusual feat is a parade of historic costumed figures and flag throwers.</p>
<p><strong>Where to Stay:</strong> Looking to savor those iconic postcard views of Tuscany&#8217;s rolling hills? Our lovely <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/borgo-beco">Borgo Beco</a> is just one of the properties available on the Borgo estate surrounded by the unspoiled southeastern Tuscan countryside.</p>
<div id="attachment_61843" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61843" class="wp-image-61843 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-Monteriggioni.jpg" alt="View of Monteriggioni in Tuscany" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-Monteriggioni.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-Monteriggioni-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-Monteriggioni-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-Monteriggioni-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-Monteriggioni-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61843" class="wp-caption-text">The medieval walled town of Monteriggioni <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Monteriggioni,_veduta_delle_mura_02.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(Credit)</a></p></div>
<h2>Monteriggioni</h2>
<p>In the rolling hills northwest of Siena sits a medieval marvel of a town called Monteriggioni. The surrounding hillsides covered in rows of grape vines and olive tree completes the idyllic scene. What makes this town especially unique is that it&#8217;s completely enclosed within 13th-century walls punctuated with 14 guard towers that form what looks like a crown from the hillside below. The impressive sight of Monteriggioni&#8217;s wall and towers was even mentioned by Dante in the <em>Divine Comedy</em> (Inferno, Canto XXXI, 40-44). Founded in the early 13th century, Monteriggioni was built by Siena as a defensive outpost against their rivals the Republic of Florence. Inside these massive wall is small medieval village full of charm. While visiting, don&#8217;t miss the chance to walk along the walls around Monteriggioni.</p>
<div id="attachment_61844" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61844" class="size-full wp-image-61844" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-san-gimignano.jpg" alt="View of San Gimignano in Tuscany" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-san-gimignano.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-san-gimignano-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-san-gimignano-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-san-gimignano-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-san-gimignano-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61844" class="wp-caption-text">San Gimignano with its famous towers</p></div>
<h2>San Gimignano</h2>
<p>Easily one of gems of Tuscany&#8211;if not all of Italy&#8211;the hilltop village of San Gimignano is easily spotted in the distance by its many stone towers. While the 14 towers in town seem like a lot today, it&#8217;s nothing compared to the town at the height of its glory when there were 72 towers in this small hilltop town! Each tower was part of a private fortified home, and its in impressive experience to imagine so much protection being required in the Middle Ages. San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with one of the best preserved medieval historic centers in Italy. Besides admiring the towers, plan to visit to the Collegiata, the Romanesque era ex-cathedral, to see the the incredible frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli and Domenico Ghirlandaio. Next, stop by the Palazzo Comunale to see the collection of 13th-15th century art by Sienese and Florentine painters and to climb to the top of the 14th-century Torre Grossa for an unforgettable view overlooking the town and countryside. Given its remarkable history and beauty, you won&#8217;t be alone while visiting San Gimignano, but it&#8217;s an experience not to be missed in Tuscany.</p>
<div id="attachment_61845" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61845" class="wp-image-61845 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-anghiari.jpg" alt="View of Anghiari in Tuscany" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-anghiari.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-anghiari-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-anghiari-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-anghiari-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-anghiari-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61845" class="wp-caption-text">The hilltop town of Anghiari <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anghiari_-_Veduta_01.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(Credit)</a></p></div>
<h2>Anghiari</h2>
<p>As off the beaten path as San Gimignano is famous, the hilltop town of Anghiari is located about 16 miles east of Arezzo in the Valtiberina Valley. Considered one of the <em>Borghi più belli d&#8217;Italia</em>, or Most Beautiful Villages of Italy, Anghiari holds a good deal of fascinating history within its early 13th-century walls. With its strategic hilltop location and alliance with Republic of Florence in the 15th century, the fortified town was the setting for the intense Battle of Anghiari on June 29, 1440 between the Republic of Florence and the Duchy of Milan. The day-long battle was an important victory for the Florentines in Tuscany and was later the subject of a Leonardo da Vinci fresco painted for the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Unfortunately, the fresco did not survive due to Leonoardo&#8217;s experimental technique, but a later drawing by Peter Paul Rubens inspired by the fresco hangs in the Louvre Museum.</p>
<p><strong>Where to Stay:</strong> Curious to explore this lovely part of Tuscany? Our <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/romanza-villa">Romanza Villa</a> is located only about a 20 minutes drive south in the verdant countryside not far from where Tuscany meets Umbria. This 3-story stone villa is nestled in 2.5 acres of gardens and features a pool for complete relaxation surrounded by the beauty of Tuscany.</p>
<div id="attachment_61848" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61848" class="size-full wp-image-61848" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-cortona.jpg" alt="Piazza della Repubblica in Cortona" width="1680" height="1243" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-cortona.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-cortona-300x222.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-cortona-1024x758.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-cortona-768x568.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-cortona-1536x1136.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61848" class="wp-caption-text">Cortona&#8217;s charming Piazza della Repubblica</p></div>
<h2>Cortona</h2>
<p>This hill town hardly needs an introduction as it was firmly placed on the map as the setting for <em>Under the Tuscan Sun</em> by Frances Mayes. Located about 20 miles south of Arezzo, Cortona has a picturesque setting overlooking rolling hills with Lake Trasimeno in the distance. Although well known, the town is absolutely charming and offers a surprising amount of artistic richness in addition to its quaint piazzas and winding streets. Find a seat at a café in the town&#8217;s Piazza della Repubblica, with a striking staircase leading up to the Palazzo Comunale, and enjoy some fine people watching. Then stroll just a few minutes to the Diocesan Museum to see the remarkable Annunciation painted by Fra Angelico along with an excellent collection, including many works by <span class="aCOpRe">Renaissance</span> artist Luca Signorelli who was born in Cortona. Step further back in time at MAEC Museum of the Etruscan Academy and the Town of Cortona, which holds a rich archaeological collection from the Etruscan civilization. Very fitting for a city that is still protected by Etruscan era walls.</p>
<div id="attachment_61849" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61849" class="size-full wp-image-61849" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-florence-from-fiesole.jpg" alt="View of Florence from Fiesole" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-florence-from-fiesole.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-florence-from-fiesole-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-florence-from-fiesole-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-florence-from-fiesole-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-florence-from-fiesole-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61849" class="wp-caption-text">Spectacular view overlooking Florence from Fiesole</p></div>
<h2>Bonus &#8230; Fiesole!</h2>
<p>If you&#8217;re staying in Florence and want to get a taste of the Tuscan hill town experience but don&#8217;t have a lot of time, don&#8217;t miss a chance to visit Fiesole. Located just outside Florence and easy to reach by taxi or bus, this hilltop town was founded by the Etruscans and fortified in the early 14th century. With its fine views overlooking Florence, it was a favorite haunt of the Medici family and is home to the Medici Villa designed by Michelozzo and built from 1458 and 1461. From Etruscan ruins to an ancient Roman theater and refined 18th and 19th-century villas, Fiesole has more to offer than just panoramic views. <p><strong>Where to Stay: </strong>Everything we love about Fiesole is perfectly captured with a stay at our <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/divine-dante">Divine Dante</a> villa. Surrounded by peaceful gardens, this exquisite villa has an incredible history, with connections to the poet Dante Alighieri and later the family of Beatrice, the object of Dante&#8217;s desire and source of inspiration of Dante&#8217;s works <em>Vita Nuova</em> and the <em>Divine Comedy</em>.</p>

<h2>Wine Tours in Tuscany</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/wine-tours-tuscany.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-61283" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/wine-tours-tuscany.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/wine-tours-tuscany.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/wine-tours-tuscany-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/wine-tours-tuscany-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/wine-tours-tuscany-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/wine-tours-tuscany-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></a></p>
<h3><strong>For Wine and Architecture: Antinori Winery</strong></h3>
<p><a href="https://www.antinori.it/en/tenuta/estates-antinori/antinori-nel-chianti-classico-estate/">Antinori</a> is famous for its striking contemporary architecture and its deep-rooted history in the region’s wine production. The winery opened in 2012, but the Antinori family’s history in winemaking goes back to the late 1300s , as does their patronage of the arts.</p>
<div id="attachment_60705" style="width: 1090px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-60705" class="size-full wp-image-60705" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect7.jpg" alt="Antinori Chianti Tuscany Vineyard" width="1080" height="720" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect7.jpg 1080w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect7-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect7-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect7-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect7-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px" /><p id="caption-attachment-60705" class="wp-caption-text">Antinori Vineyard in Chianti</p></div>
<p>Though the physical appearance of the building is unique and beautiful, the architecture plays another &#8212; and arguably more important &#8212; role. The winery was built with environmental sustainability in mind, utilizing only local resources and maximizing the energy output. The family also created the Antinori Art Project, an initiative focusing on contemporary art, immediately following completion of the winery.</p>
<p>It may be difficult to choose among the different tours: a historical tour that focuses on the family’s history in the region; a more scientific wine-making tour; a sensual tasting experience; and a custom tour option for visitors who want a little bit of everything.</p>
<div id="attachment_60706" style="width: 1090px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-60706" class="size-full wp-image-60706" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect8.jpg" alt="Albola Vineyard in Tuscany" width="1080" height="720" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect8.jpg 1080w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect8-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect8-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect8-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect8-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px" /><p id="caption-attachment-60706" class="wp-caption-text">Albola Vineyard in Chianti</p></div>
<h3><strong>For An Off-the-Beaten-Path Experience: Figline Valdarno</strong></h3>
<p>Figline Valdarno is a quiet region located near Chianti, and art history enthusiasts might recognize it as being the background landscape in the <em>Mona Lisa</em>. It’s a not as well-known as some of the other areas around Chianti, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t incredible wines to experience. One of the largest is <a href="https://www.albola.it/">Albola Castle</a>, a stunning medieval estate that has been in the Zonin family for over 40 years. Today the vineyards and estate cover 900 hectares, which includes four thousand olive trees.</p>
<p><strong>Where to Stay</strong>: Vecchietto Estate is a sprawling property with villas that offers guests tennis courts , restaurant and pools, as well as the option to book guided bike tours or excursions, yoga lessons, and traditional cooking courses. There is also a shop in nearby Montevarchi that sells local organic wines, olive oil, farm-fresh produce and other local delicacies. A few of our villas located within this estate are <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/aquila-villa">Villa Aquila</a>, <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/gabbiano-villa">Villa Gabbiano</a>,  and <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/maragone-villa" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Villa Maragone</a>.</p>
<div id="attachment_60714" style="width: 612px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-60714" class=" wp-image-60714" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/520-vgabbiano-archdetail-286x200.jpg" alt="" width="602" height="421" /><p id="caption-attachment-60714" class="wp-caption-text">Gabbiano Villa grounds</p></div>
<h3><strong>For Food and Family: Panzano and Greve in Chianti</strong></h3>
<p>Panzano and Greve are two very small towns that were put on the cultural map when <a href="https://www.foodandwinegazette.com/4523">Dario Cecchini</a>, the butcher of the famous Antica Macelleria Cecchini, was featured on a few travel shows. But these two towns have always been hidden gems in the winery game, and Greve also has a lively and well-known farmer’s market on the weekends in the town square. This little region of Chianti is perfect for anyone who wants to try delicious local foods, while sampling some of the best wines the region has to offer.</p>
<div id="attachment_60703" style="width: 1237px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-60703" class="size-full wp-image-60703" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect5.jpg" alt="Panzano Italy" width="1227" height="720" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect5.jpg 1227w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect5-300x176.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect5-1024x601.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect5-768x451.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1227px) 100vw, 1227px" /><p id="caption-attachment-60703" class="wp-caption-text">Panzano in Tuscany</p></div>
<p>And as for wineries? <a href="https://www.panzanotours.com/#tasting">Il Palagio di Panzano</a> is a small, family-run winery with roots in the scenic Conca d’Oro, and they specialize in organic wines. In their two elegant tasting rooms, guests can enjoy free wine and olive oil tasting, with breath-taking views of the rolling hills. There are also paid tours available, offering history of the area and a closer look at the production.</p>
<h3><strong>For a Fully Planned Tour or Excursion</strong></h3>

<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-60704" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect6.jpg" alt="Tuscan Vineyard" width="1079" height="720" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect6.jpg 1079w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect6-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect6-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect6-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect6-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1079px) 100vw, 1079px" /></p>
<p>We especially love their Montepulciano, Val D’Orcia and Montalcino Wine Tour. The Val D’Orcia region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to its picturesque landscape and little towns. It has also been used as a location in several well-known films: <em>The English Patient</em>, <em>Gladiator </em>and <em>A Midsummer Night&#8217;s Dream</em>, to name a few. During the tour, guests enjoy the enchanting hilltop town of Montalcino, a private tour and tasting of the most important product of this area &#8212; the famous Nobile di Montepulciano &#8212; and lunch in Pienza, which has been nicknamed the &#8220;Ideal Town.&#8221;</p>
<div id="attachment_60708" style="width: 1630px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-60708" class="wp-image-60708 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect0.jpg" alt="Tuscan Villa" width="1620" height="1080" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect0.jpg 1620w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect0-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect0-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect0-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect0-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Wine-Tours-in-Tuscany-Itinerary-Ideas-by-Italy-Perfect0-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1620px) 100vw, 1620px" /><p id="caption-attachment-60708" class="wp-caption-text">Brunello Vista Villa</p></div>

<p><strong><em>Italy Perfect Reservation Team member Kelly shares her fun experience of taking a vintage Vespa tour of Tuscany from Florence.</em></strong></p>
<p>It’s no surprise to anyone that Florence is a marvelous city to explore. Famous for many things, including its outstanding museums bursting with treasures, a myriad of beautiful churches, gorgeous architecture, epic dining and world-class shopping, this capital of Tuscany has long been a favorite of travelers for generations.</p>

<p>But after you’ve climbed to the top of the Duomo and studied the city below, placed all the landmarks and turned your gaze to the lovely green hills surrounding you, don’t you long to see what lies beyond the ancient Roman walls?</p>
<p>I know I did! And what better way to take a quick break from the busy streets and get out of town to explore the countryside for a few hours, than on a Vespa &#8212; an ultimate icon of Italy.</p>
<p>While I researched renting a scooter on my own, I thought it best to have my initial experience riding a Vespa in Italy be with the security and ease of a guided tour.</p>
<p>I’ve often used the <a href="http://shrsl.com/1e6lk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Viator</a> app on my phone to find great adventures and after viewing a number of options, I decided on booking the <a href="http://shrsl.com/1c9gp" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Florence Vintage Vespa Tour of Tuscany</a>. It turned out to be a great choice.</p>
<div id="attachment_59930" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-59930" class="wp-image-59930 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Vespa-Testing.jpg" alt="vintage Vespa tour of Tuscany by Italy Perfect" width="500" height="417" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Vespa-Testing.jpg 500w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Vespa-Testing-300x250.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><p id="caption-attachment-59930" class="wp-caption-text">Rider Training</p></div>
<p>When you arrive, they will spend a little time having each person ride one of the Vespas up and down their alley to assess your ability. Not to worry, if you can ride a bike, you’ll be fine! If they deem you a bit too shaky, you can opt to ride as a passenger with the tour leader in his vintage Fiat and still see the sights.</p>
<p>So, helmets on and off we scooted! There were 10 people in our group ranging in age from about 25 to 65 and all were equipped with two-way radios in case we got stuck behind traffic and missed a turn. But that was never a problem as our guide, in his little Fiat, did a terrific job making sure everyone stayed together. We really didn’t spend much time riding around the historic center of Florence, as the itinerary focused on getting us out into the surrounding Tuscan hills….perfect!</p>
<div id="attachment_59929" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-59929" class="wp-image-59929 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/View-from-San-Miniato.jpg" alt="vintage Vespa tour of Tuscany by Italy Perfect" width="500" height="417" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/View-from-San-Miniato.jpg 500w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/View-from-San-Miniato-300x250.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><p id="caption-attachment-59929" class="wp-caption-text">Piazzale Michelangelo Views</p></div>
<p>We headed out like ducklings following their mother, over the cobblestone streets and across the Ponte alle Grazie…what a thrill to be on a Vespa, riding across the Arno on a beautiful sunny morning. You can see, feel, smell everything so much more intimately.</p>
<p>We continued through the pretty San Niccolo neighborhood and up Viale Michelangelo and passed the crowded Piazzale Michelangelo in favor of our first stop higher up at the 1,000 year old San Miniato al Monte basilica. With its extraordinary views and one of the finest Romanesque structures in Tuscany, it was a lovely first stop and we had ample time to view the church.</p>
<div id="attachment_59932" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-59932" class="wp-image-59932 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Vespa-Lunch-View-3.jpg" alt="vintage Vespa tour of Tuscany by Italy Perfect" width="500" height="417" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Vespa-Lunch-View-3.jpg 500w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Vespa-Lunch-View-3-300x250.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><p id="caption-attachment-59932" class="wp-caption-text">Beautiful vineyard estate</p></div>
<p>Then off we went, everyone now feeling very comfortable on their vintage steeds, and enjoyed another hour riding through the hills and small villages before stopping, off road, at a vineyard where our guide informed us about the area, the vines and local wines. Then more carefree riding down winding roads, passing villas and hamlets and reveling in the beautiful scenery on our way to lunch al fresco at a hillside estate owned by “Mr. Walkabout”. This estate also hosts their cooking classes and has a marvelous terrace built into the hillside with outstanding views out over the valley. Lunch was delicious, leisurely and typically Tuscan with bruschetta, fresh pasta, cheeses and charcuterie…and Chianti wine, but only a glass for the drivers…no overindulging while riding the Vespas!</p>
<div id="attachment_60067" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-60067" class="wp-image-60067 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/ReginaAlta9.jpg" alt="vintage Vespa tour of Tuscany by Italy Perfect" width="500" height="350" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/ReginaAlta9.jpg 500w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/ReginaAlta9-300x210.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><p id="caption-attachment-60067" class="wp-caption-text">Lunch in the Tuscan hills</p></div>
<p>The last hour or so was spent meandering back into Florence, soaking up the sun and glorious views around every corner. It was a lovely and relaxing way to see a bit of Tuscany from this vantage point…and did I mention it was fun? It really was tremendously fun!</p>
<p>If I sound enamored of my <a href="http://shrsl.com/1c9gp" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">vintage Vespa tour of Tuscany</a> I am! It was one of the highlights of my time in Florence, and I plan to do it again, or possibly even venture out and rent a Vespa on my own!</p>
