These small, arched openings set into Renaissance palaces may look unassuming at first glance, but they hold centuries of history within their stone frames. A Renaissance Wine Tradition

Florence’s wine windows date back tothe 16th century, when Cosimo I de’ Medici granted noble families the right to sell wine directly from their homes. Many of these families owned vineyards in the Tuscan countryside as well as grand residences in the city. The solution was both practical and discreet: a small hatch in the palazzo wall where locals could bring a flask, pass it through, and have it filled with wine – all without ever entering the household.

These windows would become much more than just a convenience. During the plague years of the 1600s, they allowed for exchanges that kept social distance long before the concept had a name. In the centuries that followed, many were sealed or forgotten as Florence modernized, yet the wine windows endured as little reminders of the city’s resilience and ingenuity.

Rediscovery & Revival

For centuries, Florence’s wine windows were overlooked, many bricked over or repurposed as mail slots and doorbells. Their story began to reemerge thanks to the work of local historians and the Buchette del Vino Association, which has catalogued more than 180 surviving examples in Florence alone. They’ve also inspired renewed attention in recent years thanks to photographer Robbin Gheesling’s evocative Wine Doors of Florence project and the richly illustrated book Wine Windows in Florence and Tuscany by Diletta Corsini and Lucrezia Giordano.

Even Stanley Tucci brought them into the spotlight in his series Searching for Italy, where he marveled at the charm of sipping a glass of wine received through one of these centuries-old doors. All of this attention has made the buchette del vino one of Florence’s most charming gastronomic features.

Wondering how to get from Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport to Florence? There are several ways to make the journey, each with its own pros and cons depending on your travel style, budget and schedule. Whether you’re considering the train, bus, taxi, a private driver or renting a car, here’s a clear look at your options to help you choose the best way to start your stay in Florence.

TRAM + TRAIN

Take the Pisa Mover tram that leaves every 5-10 minutes from the airport to the Pisa central train station, a 5-minute ride. Buy tram tickets at tram kiosk.

Then catch the next train to Florence, no reservations needed. Trains leave approximately every hour and the journey takes from 50 minutes to 75 minutes, depending on the train, to Santa Maria Novella SMN, the main Florence train station.

Walk out the front of the Florence train station. The taxi rank is to the left, queue up and take a taxi to your vacation rental in Florence.

Tickets: Pisa Mover Tram and Pisa to Florence train tickets can be purchased in the Pisa airport, online (Trenitalia) or at any train ticket office.

Price: The tram + train will about €16 per person, taxi from the train station, another €15-€20 estimate.

Time: 1.75 – 2.5 hours depending on the train you catch, time you arrive in Florence and distance from Florence train station to your accommodations.

Advantages: Inexpensive, train travel is not subject to road traffic delays. Disadvantages: You could wait for half an hour for the next train, three forms of transportation, so elapsed time could be 2+ hours.

BUS

The Caronna Sky Bus Line connects the Pisa airport directly to Florence. This bus leaves about once every hour during the day and delivers you to a location to a tram stop Tramvia T2 – Fermata Guidoni from which you can take a taxi to your accommodations or a tram into the main Santa Maria Novella train station (about 25 minutes). You may need to call a taxi. Here are taxi numbers to keep handy: +39 then 055-42-42 or 055-47-98 or 055-43-90

Tickets: Buy ticket at airport kiosk or online at www.bus.caronnatour.com.

Time: About 1 hour + tram to train station and/or taxi to accommodations.

Price: Bus €15/per person + taxi another €15-20 estimate.

Advantages: Inexpensive. Disadvantages: You could wait up to an hour for the next bus and elapsed time could be 2+ hours depending on traffic. You may have to call a taxi in Florence for which there could be a lengthy wait.

TAXI

Taxis are located on the Arrivals side of the airport. Uber might be available; check with Uber app before flying.

Price: Starts €170 + luggage and other supplements.

Time: About 1 hour + depending on demand and traffic.

Advantages: Fast, easy, minimal logistics. Disadvantage: Higher price.

PRIVATE DRIVER

Our Concierge Service is happy to organize a private driver to meet you at the Pisa airport and to drive you directly to your accommodations. The price depends on the number passengers, luggage and demand.

Price: Starts €280 for up to 4 guests including luggage.

Time: About 1 hour + depending on demand and traffic.

Advantages: Fast, easy, worry-free. Disadvantage: Higher price.

RENTAL CAR

Rental cars are available at the Pisa airport and can be booked through AutoEurope.

However, keep in mind that you don’t need a rental car in Florence where auto entry into the center is tightly controlled and has steep fines. If you do decide to rent a car, learn where the nearest garage is to your accommodations and if it can lift the automatic fines for entering the city.

Advantages: Possibly faster if you are familiar with the area. Disadvantage: Price, tricky to drive in Florence, and you must reserve a garage spot in advance.

Few places capture the imagination quite like Florence, a city steeped in history, art and historic charm. For Georgette Jupe, the woman behind Girl in Florence, what began as a study-abroad adventure turned into a lifelong love affair with Tuscany’s capital. Now she has sat down with us to share about her journey from Texas to Tuscany, what makes Florence such a special place to call home and—as a special feature—her favorite hidden gems for travelers looking to experience the city like a local.

We’ve enjoyed following you as Girl In Florence on Instagram for many years. What first brought you to Florence? When did you know you wanted to stay?

I first came to Florence when I was almost 21, originally as a study abroad student on a plane with 30 other people who had mapped out what they thought Italy would be like. At the time, I had my heart set on living in London, but I ended up in Italy by chance, a happy accident. I thought my time here would be short and sweet – an exciting detour before returning home. Little did I know, I would end up calling Florence home for over 15 years with a three year stint in Switzerland. In a way, coming here without any expectations is what allowed me to fall in love with the country in the first place.

So many aspects of life in Italy were different from what I knew growing up in the suburbs of San Antonio, Texas – the walking culture, the architecture, the access to other European cities and, of course, the simple, delicious local cuisine that had me breaking out from my student diet of sandwiches and salads. I had also just returned from a two-month stint teaching English in China, and 2005 turned out to be an incredibly pivotal year for me. It felt like the world was opening up, and with it, the possibilities of what my life could be.

Though I was born and raised in Texas, I always felt like my true home was somewhere else, though I wasn’t sure where. Italy, with its unique mix of chaos and comfort, both challenged and captivated me. After finishing my degree in Los Angeles, I decided to return to Florence, but it wasn’t an easy decision. Life as a student here was one thing; living and working as an adult in a foreign country was a whole different reality.

I had to find odd jobs that paid very little, navigate the complicated process of securing a work visa, and, most importantly, learn Italian. There were plenty of moments when I thought about packing it all in and heading back to the USA. But in the end, I’m grateful I stayed. All of the challenges I faced—difficult as they were—helped me grow into a more resilient person, someone who now tackles challenges head-on without hesitation.

What are the aspects of Florence life that you enjoy most? What makes the local community so special?

Over the years, my life in Florence has taken many different shapes, from when I first arrived at 21 to now, at 40. But one constant that has never changed is my love for the size of the city. Florence is small enough to explore on foot or by bike without getting too annoyed by the frequent transport strikes, and I’ve always felt that just walking through the center is an experience in itself. There’s always something happening – festivals, exhibitions, new restaurants and bars and though it can be very busy at times there are always hidden detours through crowds. It never gets boring.

Because the city is so compact, you constantly run into people you know, which makes me feel more connected to the community and up-to-date as to what people are up to. After 15 years, I’ve built up a real sense of familiarity here. Whether it’s at a local market or just walking down the street, I always bump into friendly faces, and that sense of belonging adds so much to my experience of the city.

For travelers staying longer in Florence, or returning for a deeper visit, what are the experiences they should seek out?

For a richer experience in Florence beyond the typical tourist attractions, consider exploring things and engaging in activities based on hobbies or curiosities you already have instead of visiting something just because you think you should or for a photo op. Into art but craving something a little less crowded? Begin with a visit to the Stibbert Museum, a lesser-known treasure showcasing an extensive collection of armor and art before stopping by the Horne Museum close to the Arno river. The Horne Museum, another secret Florentine gem. Herbert Percy Horne was a late-Victorian Englishman who came to Florence to study the Renaissance and filled his house with the sort of art that would have been seen in a home of the period. Here you’ll find work by key artists such as Giotto, Filippo Lippi and Giambologna, as well as furniture and domestic objects from the period.

Consider making a Google map of small shops, authentic boutiques and artisans and make that an entire afternoon activity after lunch. For an authentic culinary experience, make it a point to visit local markets such as Sant’Ambrogio or the weekend farmer’s market in Cascine Park. Avoid the crowded eateries near major sights and instead visit a family-run trattoria a little further out fro the center. So much of the beauty of Florence is just enjoying it on a slower, daily basis without feeling like you need to rush everything, even after 15 years I continue to be inspired.

Museums:

Stibbert Museum

The Stibbert Museum, founded by Frederick Stibbert in the 1800s, showcases his extraordinary collection of weaponry, artwork and everyday objects from European, Islamic and East Asian cultures, with a notable focus on Japan. This house museum offers a unique glimpse into the diverse civilizations that influenced Stibbert’s eclectic collection, making it one of Florence’s most interesting stops (in my personal opinion).

Innocenti Museum

Founded in Florence during the first half of the 15th century, the Istituto degli Innocenti was the first institution in the world devoted exclusively to childcare. The museum’s journey begins in the basement, showcasing the history of the institution through interactive displays about the children and nannies who lived there. On the ground floor, visitors explore Brunelleschi’s Renaissance architecture, including the Loggia degli Innocenti and the Men and Women Courtyards, highlighting the unique iron window used to receive children. The top floor features an impressive art collection, with works by Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and other Renaissance masters.

Museo Horne

Located in a historic 15th-century building in Florence, the Horne Museum houses the collection of art historian and collector Herbert Percy Horne. Filled with objects dating from the 14th to 16th centuries, the museum offers a glimpse into Renaissance domestic life through paintings, sculptures, ceramics and furniture carefully arranged as Horne instructed after his death. Highlights include masterpieces like Giotto’s St. Stephen, Simone Martini’s Madonna and Child and works by Filippo Lippi, Beccafumi and Pietro Lorenzetti.

Shops:

Scuola del Cuoio

Founded by leather artisan Marcello Gori after World War II to help those orphaned in the second world war, the Scuola del Cuoio in the Santa Croce Monastery trains artisans in the traditional craft of leatherworking. Today, it functions both as a shop selling high-quality handmade leather goods and as a school where visitors can learn the art of Tuscan leathercraft

Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella

Founded in 1612 by Dominican monks, the Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella is one of the oldest and most famous pharmacies in the world, originally known for its medicinal rose water and herbs grown onsite. Today, it serves as both a charming boutique offering historic perfumes and skincare, and a museum showcasing ancient apothecary jars, frescoes and centuries-old recipes.

Clet Abraham Studio

A small art studio where local artist Clet Abraham creates playful, street-inspired artworks and street signs. It’s a great spot to pick up unique, locally made souvenirs.

Mio Concept Store

Mio Concept Store is a boutique close to Santa Maria Novella and specializes in artisan-made goods including bespoke jewelry, art, souvenirs and journals. It’s the perfect place to support local artists in Florence.

Uashmama

Uashmama in Florence is a unique shop known for its sustainable, washable paper products, including bags, accessories and home decor all made in Tuscany. Emphasizing eco-friendliness and innovation, the brand combines traditional Italian craftsmanship with a modern, environmentally conscious ethos, offering stylish, durable items made from a distinctive, washable material. I basically love everything in this shop including their new sling bags, wallets, pot holders and more.

Female Arts in Florence

Female Arts in Florence is a contemporary art gallery is a vibrant, women-run workshop in Florence that specializes in creating high-quality, handmade products by local artists. Focused on sustainability and craftsmanship, the shop offers a range of stylish, bespoke products made from locally sourced materials and designed with a modern, eco-conscious approach.

Restaurants & Cafés:

Trattoria Sabatino

Trattoria Sabatino is a cozy, family-run eatery in Florence known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine and traditional dishes that change on the daily thanks to an old-school typewritten menu. It’s no frills, cheap and they don’t take reservations, but that only adds to the charm.

Osteria dell’Enoteca

Osteria dell’Enoteco is charming spot in the Oltrarno district that has won the praise of the hard-to-please Slow Food Osterie Guide. In addition to hand-selected wines, they offer delicious, locally sourced Tuscan cuisine with bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine t-bone steak) being the star of the show. If you go, order the peposo-filled ravioli to start and thank me later.

Discovering the joys of family life in Florence.

After living away in Switzerland for awhile, what was the best part of returning to Florence?

Returning to Florence felt almost euphoric, like slipping into your favorite sweater after a long day. My biggest struggle in Switzerland was the constant pause while I fumbled through my German, but that awkward silence vanished the second we landed back here. Everything in Florence feels like home – from the bustling markets and cozy restaurants to the parks. In Switzerland, eating out was a rare luxury thanks to the sky-high prices, but here? I’m constantly amazed at the incredible food we can enjoy for a fraction of the cost. Let’s just say, both my heart and my stomach are very happy to be home.

See the marvelous before & after transformation of Concerto in Florence!

Finding the perfect apartment in Florence is no easy feat, especially since the very best properties are often passed down through families for generations. Just as in Paris with our sister company Paris Perfect, many of our greatest finds come through the incredible connections we’ve made over the years. So when we heard from friends that something very special in Florence might be coming on the market, we moved fast. This remarkable property has a dream location in the historic center near the Ponte Vecchio and Uffizi Gallery, a stunning wrap around terrace with views of the Duomo, and even had a separate neighboring property we were able to purchase as well. And so our stunning Concerto and Allegro apartments were born!

While finding the right property always has a touch of the magic in it, renovating it to create a comfortable and elegant vacation rental in another story. We shared a glimpse of the process in our total transformation of the Amore apartment. There’s a tremendous amount of work that happens behind the scenes, including adventurous deliveries and all the challenges that come with working in a historic center, but the final result always feels magical too. Join us as we share a before and after look at creating the Concerto!

Crafting a Stylish Open Plan Living Space

When we first saw the Concerto apartment, we knew immediately that it was a treasure. While the design was dated and the stellar terrace was a bit sad, the floor plan was already very well designed to transform it into a comfortable two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment. While the entire property needed a complete remodel and update, it was a relief that major works weren’t required – like moving rooms or adding additional bathrooms. The apartment already had a large open plan living room with beautiful light and a kitchen tucked away on one side.

For the final design, brighter walls were needed since the yellow toned walls really darkened the room. It worked well to keep the seating area in the same space, but the the kitchen needed a complete revamp. You can see, in the photo below, that the gorgeous new kitchen is now open plan and so much brighter and more spacious.

The first big project to tackle was a complete remodel of the kitchen, which felt like it was tucked away in a closet. In fact, the door in the kitchen opened to a closet that did once connect the this property to the one next door, which is now our beautiful Allegro apartment. Given this connection, we realized we could shift the Concerto kitchen forward slightly and use some of the footprint of the original kitchen when remodeling the Allegro apartment next door. (A story for another day!)

After removing the mirror paneled sliding doors to the kitchen, we opened it up and made the new kitchen a beautiful and cohesive part of the living room’s design. Comparing the two—above and below—it’s hard to tell it’s even the same space! It went from closed off and small with only a tiny sliver of counter space to open, bright, surrounded by storage, and tons of counter space for cooking at home.

Adding the extra counter and cabinets not only added more counter space and storage but also created a visual division of the space. However, it did mean moving the dining table from where it had originally been located near the kitchen. This created one problem we had to solve. How to design a comfortable seating space as well as a dining area in the living room, while simultaneously making it feel more open and spacious than before?

The solution came with a beautiful touch thanks to the decor and design by Ann Huff from Huff Harrington. The large L-shaped sofa on the right anchors the seating area and the comfortable swivel chairs in a neutral tone divide the room from the dining area on the left. The final result is full of light, color and, above all, comfort!

To make this possible, and to move the dining area to the opposite side of the room, we had to make a small change to the entrance of the second bedroom, which you can see below. The original door location limited the space for a dining area, but was an easy problem to solve by shifting the door to the left.

While not a big change, moving the door to bedroom 2 from the center of the wall to the left allowed for a dining area with a brighter and even better placement right next to a large window overlooking the terrace.

The jewel toned chairs and contemporary table stand out beautifully against the scenic wallpaper design that adds so much to the room’s decor. Simply close the door to the bedroom for a continuity of the design pattern. What a lovely touch!

The open plan living space was complete! It is now a wonderfully comfortable and functional room that our guests rave about. We love creating spaces that aren’t just a backdrop to your holiday but become a treasured part of your time together with family and friends.

Designing Two Beautiful Bedrooms

This property already had two nicely sized bedrooms—one on each side of the apartment—with large windows overlooking the terrace. We could see the potential immediately in the primary bedroom, which had a big window and en suite bathroom. We started there but, of course, the blue paint had to go!

BEFORE: Bedroom 1 needed a facelift and lighter colors.

For the primary bedroom, a wall of built-in wardrobes replaced the mirrored wardrobe and a sumptuous new bed became the focal point of the room. The framed Hermès scarf above the bed set the tone with its gold designs that are picked up throughout the room with the antique sconces and the accent pillows. The blue painted ceiling was replaced with a soft grey decorative pattern. With the addition of an antique chandelier, the room was complete!

When it came to updating the second bedroom, a bit more work had to be done. The room had great light from the large door overlooking the terrace. However, due to the size and the placement of the door, as well as a lovely stone fireplace mantle, the room only had space for two single beds.

As mentioned earlier, the biggest change was moving the door from the center of the room to the side to create space for the dining area in the living room. However, this was a positive change for the bedroom design too. It made space for a tall wardrobe for plenty of storage and allowed for a new placement of the beds. With the beds facing the fireplace mantle instead of alongside it, the space took on a more balanced and peaceful design.

Instead of feeling awkward and cramped, the room now has a gloriously elegant design, with floral wallpaper and antique decorative touches. And for convenience, the beds can still be configured as two separate beds if needed.

Seeing these stunning transformations after so much hard work is incredibly rewarding. It’s even better when we know that our guests will enjoy starting their day in Florence and open the terrace doors to hear the bells of the Duomo ring out over the rooftops of Florence. Just imagine this as your very own room with a view!

Beautiful New Bathrooms

While the apartment had two full bathrooms, they needed a full remodel from top to bottom. Starting over again from scratch gave us the opportunity to rearrange and removing the bathtub opened up the space tremendously in the en suite bathroom.

The final result is a bright and modern space, with gorgeous marble on the walls and black and white tiles on the floor. The step in shower has a large rainwater showerhead as well as a handheld showerhead.

The second full bathroom is located just off the living room and even before the renovation had a shower, toilet and sink. Yet the small corner shower left much to be desired.

By simply adding a small wall, we were able to create a better sized shower and add a long sink and large mirrors that add even more of a sense of space to the bathroom.

Designing the Perfect Terrace in Florence

AFTER: Every time we step out on this terrace it’s hard to leave!

After all the hard work inside, there was still one major project to tackle at Concerto. The terrace! Our goal was to create a space as perfect as the views over Florence, which include Orsanmichele, Giotto’s bell tower and the soaring cupola of the Duomo designed by Brunelleschi. This is the magical place you want to be any time of the day, from sipping a cappuccino in the morning to enjoying a glass of wine at night.

While the structure of the terrace was fine, it was still a sad sight when we first viewed the property. Just take a look at where it started!

With such a long wrap-around terrace, we knew we wanted to create multiple seating areas so that guests could enjoy the views throughout the day. The first step was to decide how to arrange the seating areas. At one end of the long terrace, we created a cozy spot with a cushioned bench. Then midway down the terrace, we added two more comfortable chairs. We love how this creates perfect space for relaxation and conversation.

At the other end, the angle of the wrap-around terrace was ideal for a table and chairs. With such an incredible terrace, it would be a shame to not be able to dine al fresco with a view over the rooftops of Florence!

The final result is inviting and the umbrella allows for comfortable dining throughout the day. Shop for fresh ingredients locally and enjoy relaxed meals at home during your stay in Florence. This gorgeous outdoor space is ideal during the summer months, especially when compared to a cramped hotel room. Just step out on the terrace and you’ll feel connected to Florence every moment of your stay.

Putting the finishing touches on the terrace was one of the biggest challenges of the renovation at Concerto.
