There is certainly no shortage of art to see when you are visiting Rome. Pop into just about any church, there are over 900, and you can find sculptures by Bernini and Michelangelo and paintings by Caravaggio. The Vatican Museums are arguably one of the world’s finest collections of art and absolutely worth a visit but there are also many other world-class exhibitions in Rome.

Art Exhibitions in Rome

All kinds of shows come to Rome including ancient treasures that are loaned from other Italian regions and museums from around the world. Many of these museums have rich permanent collections in addition to temporary exhibitions. To help you explore even more of Rome’s artistic treasures in Renaissance cloisters and modern palazzos, we have put together this list of 10 great places to see art exhibitions in Rome.

Richard Meier via Wiki Commons

Museo dell’Ara Pacis

The striking and modern Richard Meier glass and travertine building along the Lungotevere houses the ancient monument the Ara Pacis Augustae. This triumphal piece was commissioned by the Roman senate in 13 BC to honor the emperor, Augustus. The Museo dell’Ara Pacis offers a virtual reality experience of the monument and has a small exhibition space downstairs for visiting shows.

The Scuderie del Quirinale

The Scuderie del Quirinale is at the top of one of Rome’s famous seven hills (the Quirinale) and is part of the Palazzo Quirinale, which is an official residence of the President of the Italian Republic. Built in the 1700s, the building was once used as the carriage house and stables of the palazzo. Today it hosts major art exhibitions in Rome. The climb to the top floor offers a view out towards San Pietro. The bookstore is worth a visit for unusual and interesting Roman and museum themed gifts.

Palazzo Bonaparte

Piazza Venezia is a chaotic traffic circle that is best known for the massive Vittoriano monument. The Palazzo Bonaparte stands at the beginning of the famous shopping street the via del Corso and has recently opened to the public after years of renovations. Once the home to Maria Letizia Ramolino, you may know her better as the mother of Napoleon Bonaparte, who used her enclosed green shuttered balcony to watch over the piazza. The Suprema Style and Giada apartments are a nice stroll.

Palazzo Venezia

Across the street from the Palazzo Bonaparte is the Palazzo Venezia. Over the centuries, this palace has been home to a pope, the Venetian and the Austrian embassy to Rome and the headquarters of the Fascist party. Today it is a small museum that has an eclectic collection of furniture, paintings and few Bernini sculptures. The real secret here is the quiet garden in the middle that is free and open to the public.

Chiostro del Bramante

The Chiostro del Bramante is one of Rome’s prettiest spaces. Built by the Renaissance era architect and rival of Michelangelo, Donato Bramante was originally part of a monastery complex. The church next door is home to four Sibyl frescoes painted by Raphael. Look for the special room next to the cafe where you can view them. The exhibition space showcases major modern artists. The Italy Perfect Cortigiana apartment is right there.

Livioandronico2013 via Wiki Commons

Palazzo Braschi

The Palazzo Braschi is one of the Renaissance palaces that ring the Piazza Navona. Modern by Roman standards, it was built on the footprint of a fifteenth-century construction and centuries of political and financial problems beset its completion. After WWII, it even served as shelter for 300 homeless families. After extensive repairs and renovations undertaken by the Italian state today, the palace is home to the Museo di Roma and hosts art, sculpture and photography shows. The views over the three fountains in the piazza are special. It’s very convenient to our Pasquino apartment.

Palazzo Altemps

Inside the 15th century, Palazzo Altemps is an enthralling selection of Classical sculpture collected by Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi in the 17th century. The Ludovisi Battle sarcophagus dates to the 3rd century and is remarkable for its fine detail depicting the Romans fighting the Ostrogoths. Purchase the combined ticket for a few euros more and you will have entry to the three other museums that are part of the Museo Nazionale Romano.

Gobbler via Wiki Commons

Palazzo Barberini

The Palazzo Barberini is home to Rome’s National Gallery of Ancient Art. In this vast palace, you can visit famous works by Caravaggio, Bernini, Lippi and Rafael. The site of personal gardens and vineyards of the Sforza family in the 15th century was purchased by the Barberini family in 1625. Three of Italy’s greatest architects, Maderno, Borromini and Bernini all worked on the building. Don’t miss the hidden garden and magnificent oval spiral staircase. This is easy to reach from the Italy Perfect apartments nearby such as Corelli Charm.

Palazzo Merulana

A short stroll from Termini train station is the Palazzo Merulana. The former Health Department had been abandoned for decades, but it has been painstakingly restored into a gleaming light-filled space. The permanent collection is works of 20th-century artists from Rome and Italy, including pieces by Boetti, De Chirico and Pirandello.

Centrale Montemartini

The Centrale Montemartini is an unconventional mix of form and function where Roman sculptures and mosaic floors from the Capitoline Museum collection are placed among the massive engines and turbines that once powered the city. The former power plant-turned-museum is in the Ostiense neighborhood where you can explore a thriving street art and modern dining scene.

Caravaggio was the most original and influential Italian painter of the 17th century. His style greatly influenced European artists such as Rubens and Rembrandt and revived Italian painting from the fantasy of post Renaissance and late 16th century Mannerist art. He rejected idealized beauty and started reproducing naked reality. You can see 18 original Caravaggio paintings in Rome, many free to visit in churches.

Revolutionary Idea – Real People!

Even in his religious paintings, he presented a completely new model that reflected real life. You can see how he represented saints as common men and women, humble, lowly, with dirty feet and hands, sun-browned complexions and wrinkled skin. Moreover, he dared to use prostitutes to pose for his beautiful Madonnas and this was really outrageous!

Matthew and the Angel (1st version)

Caravaggio reflected a religious movement of the time that favored a return to poverty, sobriety and the purity of the beginning of Christianity, which was in great contrast to the magnificence and the richness of the official Church of Rome. It’s no surprise that the official church labeled many of his paintings as “lacking in decorum.” For example, when he painted St. Matthew and the Angel, the first version of the painting was rejected, and the artist had to repaint it. In that first version, St. Matthew was so human and real. He was represented as an illiterate, rough, humble person, sitting cross-legged with his feet prominent in the foreground. There was an angel next to him holding his hand and teaching him to write while composing his Gospel. He seemed to be staring in amazement at his own writing.

Matthew and the Angel (2nd version)

The second version – the one you can see today in San Luigi dei Francesi right next to Piazza Navona in Rome – transformed the saint into a learned and well-groomed man, inspired, but not physically guided by the angel who is not next to him anymore, but above him. St. Matthew is no longer amazed; he just seems surprised by the divine voice telling him what to write in the Gospel.

Another painting that “lacked decorum” is that of Madonna of the Papal-Grooms or Madonna of the Serpent. This altarpiece was briefly exhibited in the Vatican before its removal due to its unorthodox portrayal of the Virgin Mary and of St. Anne, her mother. It was sold to Cardinal Scipione Borghese, and now hangs in the Galleria Borghese where you can see it today.

Madonna and the Serpent

The theme is the trampling of the serpent that represents evil and original sin. The Virgin Mary places her foot on the serpent’s head, while little Jesus presses down on her foot to help crush it. Watching the scene is St. Anne, the mother of Mary and patron saint of the horse-grooms. The three figures behave naturally as if in the intimacy of a common family. The painting was removed almost as soon as it was hung over the altar. Why? Because the Virgin Mary is represented as a common woman; her dress is too low-necked and she is wearing it with the skirt hitched up and knotted on her side like a normal woman would do. Jesus was considered too old to be completely naked, and St. Anne is painted as an old woman; lined and weary, her hands in the foreground show dirty nails. And the worst was that the model who posed for the Virgin Mary was Lena, a well known prostitute of the time!

Planning a vacation in Italy is a wonderful puzzle and a delightful discussion with your travel companions. There are so many places to visit and wonderful things to enjoy, you should take into account the experiences and interests of your traveling companions.

Here are a few questions to ponder with input from our experts:

Countryside versus city vacations?

The marvelous countryside is best Spring through October. Most properties rent Saturday/Saturday.

Cities are welcoming year-round. Busy with tourists during peak summer months May, June, July.

To enjoy beaches in Italy, purchase a pass to a beach club with full amenities. More information.

Country villas are designed for relaxing so day trips will take some planning and some driving. Evening meals easiest in the property, versus nighttime drive on dark country roads after some vino. Answers to questions about villas you didn’t know to ask.

While in a city, you can pop in and out of your apartment to enjoy sights and meals.

Teenagers may enjoy exploring cities more than countryside stays. “Moooom, I’m bored, there is nothing to do, the internet connection is slow….”

Of course you can visit both cities and countryside. Talk to us before nailing things down for best sequence.

What do we want to do?

First timers often want to see the top 10 sights whereas returning travelers may want to visit fascinating sights that are on a longer list. For a mixed group, consider staying some place where folks can go in different directions.

Some travelers go deep into fascinating layers of Italy with explorations such as the history of concrete, walking the city walls, off-the-beaten path museums.

Getting around. Consider mobility issues. You end up walking a lot through the fascinating cities. Not all buildings have elevators.

Driving conditions vary. Does your group have a calm and confident driver used to a range of driving conditions? The road systems are excellent, but sometimes crowded, narrow, winding and hilly.

Do we want to just relax in a beautiful setting with a few day trips from a countryside property?

Crowds?

The popular locations and sights can be crowded during peak travel time. Some places are always mobbed. Consider:

early morning visits before the tour buses/ships arrive

hire a personal guide who can adjust the itinerary on the fly

going during the winter

avoid the top 10 sights, go deeper; the possibilities are infinite

Activities?

Who wants to see the incredible art collections in Italy’s museums and palaces? Some wonderful museums are moderate in size, so even those somewhat allergic to museums can find small jewels.

Who wants to hike, bike and explore the outdoors? Advance planning required.

Fun with food. You can enjoy Italy’s marvelous food every day with just a little discrimination. Some prep required if you want to take cooking lessons or eat at top restaurants.

Art hunt. Masterpieces of architecture and art are found all across the country in palaces and churches. Nothing like finding a Caravaggio or Byzantine masterpiece in a spiritual cathedral. The huge and most prestigious art exhibit in the world is at the Venice Biennale.

Music. Perennial favorites in Italy’s opera houses (or in the ruins of ancient Rome) and seasonal programs balance out your activities.

Good restaurants in Italy book up for dinner during the busier times of year, generally from mid-March well into November. Don’t hesitate to make reservations so you don’t find yourself stumbling into a restaurant that has a waiter out front waving in tourists. It might be a good restaurant, but usually the best ones don’t need that effort.

Here are two online services for making restaurant reservations in Italy: www.thefork.com or https://www.quandoo.it/en

Some restaurants have websites and online booking or an email address you can use. Some have FaceBook pages. When emailing, best to use European date format DD/MM and time format, 24 hour clock, so 7pm is 19:00.

Many good restaurants are firmly rooted in the 20th century and you must telephone, since they don’t take online restaurants. Call during Italy lunch time or at about 6pm their time when they are preparing for dinner service, remembering the time difference. Someone will speak English.

Italians generally don’t make dinner reservations before 8pm (20:00), so a good tactic to get into a popular restaurant is to make a reservation for 7-7:30 (19:00-19:30) before Italian crowd. More and more restaurants, especially in tourist destinations, are realizing the value of two table turns if they accommodate tourists at 7pm.

If you have a large group, try to study how they will seat you in the restaurant. In tight quarters you might be squished together or seated at separate tables. Ask if they have a special area for larger groups.

For Easter, the day after Easter, Christmas and Boxing Day, book 2+ months in advance.

If you reserve a vacation rental with Italy Perfect, we provide our guests with a list of good restaurants in the cities where we have properties to our guests .

Renowned travel blogger Leah Travels tells us all about her enjoyable stay in Rome.

The Spanish Steps have been an inspiration for poets, painters and artists since the early 1720s. They’re also a landmark I frequented during my fourth visit to Rome in June. My Italy Perfect apartment was just a two-minutes walk from Piazza di Spagna, the home of the Spanish Steps.

The 138 Roman Baroque-style steps are iconic for their elegant and unique butterfly design, connecting the Piazza di Spagna with the higher piazza Trinita dei Monti. Once a popular meeting place for creatives, the Spanish Steps is now a gathering place for Romans and travelers of all backgrounds. It felt fitting to call this area, more specifically the Corelli Charm Apartment, my home base for my most recent visit to the Eternal City.

The Corelli Charm Apartment

Staying near the Spanish Steps, and coincidentally near many of Rome’s most famous attractions, was my best option for such a brief visit to the capital city. However, I was greeted by far more than just a desirable neighborhood when I arrived at the Corelli Charm apartment. Natural lighting, cozy but modern furniture, and a traditional Italian terrace provided the European elegance I love without the touristic hotel feel.

The simple pleasures of home, like a clothes washer and dryer, full kitchen, and luscious L-shaped sofa, truly made me feel like a local in a city that steals a bigger piece of my heart every time I visit. I especially enjoyed perusing the provided set of Rome guidebooks with my morning espresso on the interior terrace.

Staying Near the Spanish Steps

Experience Rome’s traffic, and you may think a relaxing haven on one of Rome’s most historic streets is impossible to find. But the peaceful Corelli Charm apartment overlooking the constant motion of Via Capo le Case, is just that. Simply stepping out of the apartment and into the neighborhood means discovering art galleries, people watching at the Scalina Spagna and exploring the former home of John Keats.

So many of Rome’s top attractions are just a short walk from the Corelli Charm apartment leaving the hassle of battling that infamous Rome traffic out of the picture. I was able to walk to Italian architect Nicola Salvi’s Trevi Fountain in five minutes, and ancient Rome’s best-preserved building, the Pantheon, in 13 minutes. Exploring these areas by foot also meant discovering the local shops like those on via Frattina, cafes, piazzas, and galleries sprinkled in between. Note to shoppers: it only took a few minutes for me to drop my shopping bags back at the apartment before venturing to farther attractions.

The nearby location of the subway station at the Spanish Steps, just a 5-minute walk away, became a great convenience. Less than 20 minutes on the subway, and I was at the Vatican Museums and St. Peters Basilica.

There’s never enough time in Rome for me, but staying near the Spanish Steps at the Corelli Charm apartment made squeezing in all of the sightseeing, shopping and dining that much more convenient and enjoyable.

Truffles are one of those foods that tends to get a strong reaction. Like cilantro, Brussels sprouts and blue cheese, you either love ’em or hate ’em!

Truffles are intensely fragrant and hard to find in most places except Italy. They are the underground fruit of ascomycetous fungi. The fruit spores are dispersed though being consumed by fungivores. They are so rare they may be the most expensive ingredient you can indulge in at $1000-$3000/pound.

Why are they so expensive? Truffles cannot be farmed; they grow only in the wild. ‘Harvesting” truffles is a true challenge –- a hunt. Trained dogs sniff out the truffles from their underground hiding places among the roots of trees. Traditionally pigs were used for this task but they would often eat the truffles before they could be gathered. A little more complicated than just going out and picking up mushrooms! The most prized truffles in the world – the Tuber magnatum pico or white truffle – are found almost exclusively in Italy, making the Italian peninsula the best place to try Italian foods seasoned with truffles.

Knowing the effort that goes into procuring truffles helps explain the high price, which leaves another question: if you’re planning to spend their money on the Italian truffle experience, what is the best way to try them?

Well, to stick with iconic Italian fare, you can’t go wrong incorporating truffles into a pasta dish. Foodies recommend keeping the pasta dish simple in order to really highlight the flavor of the truffles. Another favorite is pizza with a hint of shaved truffles on top or a drizzle of truffle oil.

True connoisseurs say they never actually cook their truffles. A precious white truffle can instead be turned into truffle butter without compromising the integrity of the flavor.

To taste a truffle-flavored dish while in Italy, choose a reputable restaurant that can show you the truffles they are using. No one will be offended if you pleasantly and eagerly ask to see their truffles. The smell is unmistakable so a sniff of your dish will confirm.

We often buy our truffles in Italy at the airport duty free gourmet stores where they are vacuum packed so they don’t “perfume” your carry-on luggage.

Fresh truffles are yet another reason to enjoy Italy in Autumn.

Orvieto is a gem of a town in Italy. Perched high atop an Umbrian hill, it has beautiful spaces, dramatic views, famous art and dramatic history for visitors to enjoy. The old part of the city is a bit of window into the past because it is virtually traffic-free.

Only an hour-and-a-half north of Rome, the walled city of Orvieto is a great place to experience an ancient, important hilltown. It is convenient too, since it is fairly easy to reach from Rome or Florence.

Easy daytrip from Rome. You can even take the train. Or, for a relaxing outing we can recommend a private driver who will organize a day excursion so you can relax and take in the scenic views along the road.

Convenient drop-off point for a rental car when traveling to or from Rome, avoiding all traffic around the city…and you can visit the charming town and then hop on the train to Rome.

Stopping point for trips between southern points and northern ones. Nice to get off the highway and have a delicious lunch in the piazza.

Recommendations on what to see and do.

Wander the town to discover on your own, or you could sign up for a walking tour to guide you and provide the fascinating history of the town.

The Cathedral/Duomo is beautiful, colorful and famous for the splendid mosaics of the facade. Inside are famous frescoes, notably the Judgement of Luca Signorelli, one of the masters of the Renaissance telling timeless stories. Also find fine sculptures.

The cathedral piazza is a nice place to enjoy a coffee or a Spritz.

Wander the city to find a magnificent XIII palace and the medieval tower that you can climb for a breathtaking view. Then head for the medieval district on the western part of the city where you can get lost on the steep and narrow streets with ancient houses and surprising panoramic views. One of the cities of the Etruscan League before the rise of Rome, you can find an archaeological museum in the Cathedral/Duomo piazza. And then, visit, just outside the town, a fascinating Etruscan Necropolis (city of the dead) .

Ancient caverns wind through the rocky prominence with tunnels and rooms that were excavated by the Etruscans and used in the misty past. A 45 minute tour of Orvieto Underground leaves from the tourist office near the Cathedral/Duomo.

Saint Patrick’s Well (Pozzo di San Patrizio) was the solution to water during medieval sieges. It was dug through the stone 175 feet with TWO spiral staircases for people to haul up their water. Guests are welcome.

Logistics:

Park at the bottom of the cliff near the train station and take the funicular up. This is also your starting point if you take the train.

Park at Campo Boario an underground parking about halfway up. Elevators/escalators to the center. Drive up to Piazza Cahen where there is limited parking.

The local tourist office website is helpful.

Here are the Roman neighborhoods most prized by tourists who like to walk to and from the sites and roam the wonders of this amazing city. The naming of the areas can confound because some use the ancient designations, such as “Campo Marzio”, widely referred to as the Spanish Steps area, while others use medieval names, and others, like us, will go with conventional names that are more descriptive of what sites you’ll find there.

Rome is a big city, but the historic center is very manageable. You can visit most of it on foot or just a short bus or metro ride between sites. Tourists who like to wander out their front door into the most intriguing places in the city have a wealth of wonderful areas to choose in the historic center. We select all the apartments we represent for their prime locations in Rome’s historic center. Here are our favorite locations.

Growing up in Rome, I spent many an hour waiting for the bus at Largo di Torre Argentina, commonly referred to as Largo Argentina. My only thought about Largo Argentina at the time was that it was a convenient central bus hub to get all around Rome. It is and was easy to find because of the central square filled with a bunch of walled-off Roman ruins. It was not until a high school history class at the Overseas School of Rome (thank you Hiram Dewitt) when I learned that, right from my bus stop, I was looking at the site where Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 B.C. by an angry mob of senators who purportedly stabbed him 23 times on March 15, a date on the Roman calendar referred to as the “Ides of March”.

Gazing down at the ruins you can see the remains of four Roman temples that were unearthed in the 1920s during building construction work. This remarkably important ruin, where Julius Caesar met his end and the Roman Senate revolted, is easy to miss on a busy sightseeing itinerary since there are no markers drawing attention to it. Chances are you’ll walk right by it at some point during your Rome visit and have no idea what it is. The site was opened to the public for the first time in 2023 after a major redevelopment sponsored by luxury goods purveyor Bulgari. The neglected ruins have been made tourist friendly with a new entrance, lighting, footpaths and restrooms.

In recent decades Largo Argentina has become known and loved for the many homeless and charmingly photogenic cats that lounge about, basking in the sun, practically posing for the cameras among the ruins. Local volunteers ensure the cats are fed and cared for, and you can find out more about them and even do a “distance” adoption to support the cat sanctuary here.

The location is conveniently central not just for the bus & tram lines but also because it is smack dab in the center, just minutes walk to Campo de’ Fiori, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the Jewish Ghetto and many wonderful restaurants. It is also a short hop across the river to Trastevere on the tram line. For a quick and casual bite, stop in at popular Rossopomodoro pizzeria along the Largo Argentina, they serve good Neapolitan-style pizza, be prepared for the line out the door but it moves quickly.

Stop in Cafffè Camerino also on the piazza, where, as the owner once told us, “We were awarded an additional F in our name for quality!” See the sign in the image above with, count ’em, three F’s in the word cafe: Cafffè! Their cappuccino is excellent.

We love everything about this charming neighborhood, which we call a hidden haven in the heart of Rome. Enjoy a stay in the area at our Sonata apartment, just around the corner from Largo di Torre Argentina or our Pasquino and Tartini Triumph apartments, which are just a few minutes’ walk from this historic location.
