<p>We love Florence and Tuscany year-round, but there’s something extra special about visiting in the cooler months. The crowds thin, the countryside turns golden and quiet, and the food—oh, the food—becomes the star of the season. From slow-cooked soups to hearty pastas, it’s the kind of comfort cooking that warms you right through. So when we heard about the new cookbook <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Winter-Tuscany-Recipes-Quanto-Basta/dp/176076521X/&amp;tag=perfectexperi-20" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong><em>Winter in Tuscany</em></strong></a> by Florence based author <a href="https://amberguinness.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Amber Guinness</strong></a>, we couldn’t wait to dive in.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Winter-Tuscany-Recipes-Quanto-Basta/dp/176076521X/&amp;tag=perfectexperi-20" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-64526 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-2.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1075" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-2.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-2-300x192.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-2-1024x655.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-2-768x491.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-2-1536x983.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></a></p>
<p>Following her gorgeous cookbooks <a href="https://www.amazon.com/House-Party-Tuscany-Amber-Guinness/dp/1760762571/&amp;tag=perfectexperi-20" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>A House Party in Tuscany</em></a> and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Italian-Coastal-Recipes-Stories-Where/dp/1760764337/&amp;tag=perfectexperi-20" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Italian Coastal</em></a>, this book is all about the flavors and rhythms of life in Southern Tuscany and Florence during the quieter months. It’s a celebration of cooking and savoring life at a gentler pace. Beautifully illustrated throughout, the recipes will make you want to pull up a chair and stay awhile. And then roll up your sleeves, tie on an apron and get to work making them at home!</p>
<p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Winter-Tuscany-Recipes-Quanto-Basta/dp/176076521X/&amp;tag=perfectexperi-20" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-64525 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-3.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1074" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-3.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-3-300x192.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-3-1024x655.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-3-768x491.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-3-1536x982.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></a></p>
<p>What makes <em>Winter in Tuscany</em> such an enjoyable cookbook just to sit down and read is how well it goes beyond recipes. It’s filled with snippets of history and local lore, tracing Tuscan cuisine all the way back to its ancient <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/etruscan-history-italy.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Etruscan roots</a>. You’ll find practical guidance, too, like how to stock your pantry for Tuscan-style cooking at home. Simple ingredients that go a long way are key, from lentils and beans to grains, olive oil and herbs. There’s plenty here for vegetarians as well, since so much of Tuscany’s traditional fare relies on hearty, plant-based flavors. And yes, there’s a whole world of Tuscan soups beyond <em>ribollita</em> – plus pastas, roasts and even a spaghetti made with Chianti that is perfect for a chilly evening.</p>
<p>We love how Guinness has captured the feeling of being in Tuscany in the off season. It’s full of art, travel inspiration and the kind of details that transport you straight to Florence’s cobblestoned streets or a cozy trattoria in the hills.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Winter-Tuscany-Recipes-Quanto-Basta/dp/176076521X/&amp;tag=perfectexperi-20" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-64524 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-1.jpg" alt="winter in Tuscany" width="1680" height="1075" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-1.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-1-300x192.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-1-1024x655.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-1-768x491.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/winter-in-tuscany-review-1-1536x983.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></a></p>
<p>Even if you can’t make it to Italy this winter, this book is a great way to bring a little piece of Tuscany home. <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Winter-Tuscany-Recipes-Quanto-Basta/dp/176076521X/&amp;tag=perfectexperi-20" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Winter in Tuscany</em></a> is also a perfect gift for anyone who loves Italian food, travel and the simple joy of a good meal shared. Or it might just inspire you to plan your next Tuscan getaway! Keep the inspiration going with a look at our <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/rentals/florence/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Florence vacation rentals</a> and dreamy <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/rentals/tuscany/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">villas in Tuscany</a>.</p>

<p>Florence visitors arrive every year equipped with a list of what to do, what to see and, most importantly, what to eat during their visit. It’s almost impossible to visit the city without indulging in a <em>bistecca alla Fiorentina, </em>a gargantuan cut of beef that is aged to perfection in Florence’s most celebrated restaurants. If you&#8217;re a foodie, there are endless opportunities to sample classics like tagliatelle pasta with <em>porcini</em> mushrooms and truffles, <em>pappardelle</em> with wild boar <em>ragù, </em>or the delightfully crunchy <em>schiacciata</em> bread (especially the version made with crushed grapes). And that’s just the start: there’s nothing like strolling past the Duomo with your favorite gelato, sitting on a terrace eating <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zuccotto" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>zuccotto</em></a> or finishing your meal with homemade <em>cantucci</em> biscuits dipped in local <em>vin santo. </em></p>
<p>You could easily spend your holiday sampling all of the best cuisine that Florence has to offer, but you’d only be getting a taste of what’s available in the surrounding area. Due to both its position in the heart of Tuscany and its very well developed transport infrastructure, Florence is the perfect place to base yourself if you’re looking to whet your appetite and explore. Some of the most prized ingredients and best recipes in the world are within a short train ride or drive from the City of Lilies. For delectable foodie experiences, there are lesser-explored areas of Tuscany that will satisfy your hunger for adventure and make any trip a memorable one.</p>
<div id="attachment_63440" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63440" class="wp-image-63440 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lucca-patrick-schneider-FRr1vQn_Mkw-unsplash.jpg" alt="Italy foodie experiences" width="1680" height="2310" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lucca-patrick-schneider-FRr1vQn_Mkw-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lucca-patrick-schneider-FRr1vQn_Mkw-unsplash-218x300.jpg 218w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lucca-patrick-schneider-FRr1vQn_Mkw-unsplash-745x1024.jpg 745w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lucca-patrick-schneider-FRr1vQn_Mkw-unsplash-768x1056.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lucca-patrick-schneider-FRr1vQn_Mkw-unsplash-1117x1536.jpg 1117w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/lucca-patrick-schneider-FRr1vQn_Mkw-unsplash-1489x2048.jpg 1489w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63440" class="wp-caption-text">Lucca is only a short trip from Florence. <h2>Gourmet Flavors in the Garfagnana</h2>
<p>Located just over an hour&#8217;s drive or train ride from Florence, northwestern Tuscany is a foodie’s dream that flies under the radar. Known as the Garfagnana, this mountainous area is famous for its chestnuts, which were a staple of the Tuscan diet for millennia and still form the basis for local cuisine. While the countryside is an ideal location for trekking and biking, a visit to the city of <strong>Lucca </strong>is a culinary highlight for even the most seasoned traveler. Chestnuts feature in a great many classic dishes, and you’ll often find pasta made from chestnut flour. However, the most famous chestnut dish is the sweet <em><strong>castagnaccio</strong></em>, a cake made with chestnut flour, olive oil, rosemary, raisins and pine nuts.</p>
<div id="attachment_63441" style="width: 1034px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63441" class="wp-image-63441 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/castagnaccio-visittuscany-flickr.jpg" alt="Tuscany food travel experiences" width="1024" height="682" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/castagnaccio-visittuscany-flickr.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/castagnaccio-visittuscany-flickr-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/castagnaccio-visittuscany-flickr-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/castagnaccio-visittuscany-flickr-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63441" class="wp-caption-text">Traditional <em>castagnaccio</em> from Lucca. (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/visittuscany/23708047321" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>Other must-eat dishes from Lucca include <em>tordelli Lucchese</em>, an egg pasta that falls somewhere between a ravioli, a dumpling and a tiny pie. Traditionally, it is filled with beef or pork, Swiss chard, pine nuts, raisins, spices and cheese. But the most interesting ingredient in <em>tordelli</em> filling is the most nondescript: stale bread. Lucca, an important trading post, was much more prosperous than other towns of the same size, making it therefore wealthier. The culinary evidence of that is the inclusion of eggs in the <em>tordelli</em> pasta; poorer regions would not have been able to afford such a luxury and would have only used flour and water to make their dough. But using stale bread in the filling shows that despite their wealth the Lucchese were not inclined to waste anything, including the ends of bread. These funny details are often the very things that make food such a great tour guide, and nowhere is that more true than in the wild mountains of the Garfagnana.</p>
<div id="attachment_63444" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63444" class="wp-image-63444 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/livorno-italy-day-trip-from-florence.jpg" alt="Tuscany travel foodie " width="1680" height="1113" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/livorno-italy-day-trip-from-florence.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/livorno-italy-day-trip-from-florence-300x199.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/livorno-italy-day-trip-from-florence-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/livorno-italy-day-trip-from-florence-768x509.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/livorno-italy-day-trip-from-florence-1536x1018.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63444" class="wp-caption-text">Spend a day by the sea in Livorno.</p></div>
<h2>Seafood on the Shores of Livorno</h2>
<p>When you think of Tuscany, chances are that your mind goes to rolling hills and rows of vineyards that seem to stretch into infinity. However, the region has some of Italy’s most dramatic and stellar coastlines and fabulous seaside towns. At just over an hour’s drive or train ride from Florence, <strong>Livorno</strong> is a relaxed city with tons of charm and even more great food. Of course, it won’t be surprising that the city is famous for its seafood, in particular the famous <em><strong>cacciucco</strong></em>. Although many port cities boast their own version of fish stew, this one seems to perfectly embody this wonderfully eclectic place: five types of fish (one for each &#8220;c&#8221; in the name) are cooked together until it becomes not quite a soup and not quite a stew, but something entirely unique.</p>

<p>Livorno is just one of many <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/the-best-beach-experiences-near-florence.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">great beach experiences near Florence</a>. The uniqueness of the city comes in part from its history, which saw it develop in the 1500s as a trading outpost for the Medici empire. As such, the city was known for its liberal laws and multicultural population, which is still evident in some of its signature dishes.<em> Cuscussù alla livornese </em>is a local version of the Levantine couscous that most believe to have arrived in the city with the Sephardic traders who settled here in the Middle Ages. Like many other cities by the sea, its history has been shaped by the constant traffic between worlds beyond the horizon. If you head to the port and grab a citrus-infused doughnut known locally as<strong><em> frate</em></strong>, you can almost picture it for yourself!</p>

(<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/LZ1e1z0bXzE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<h2>Siena’s Sweet Tooth</h2>
<p>One of the most iconic cities in Tuscany, <strong>Siena </strong>has a history that dates to the <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/etruscan-history-italy.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Etruscan period</a> and gave birth to some of the most influential minds in the Renaissance. Along the way, the world’s oldest bank also set up shop there, and the world famous Palio horse race draws visitors from all over the world to watch as the medieval center is transformed into a stadium. Of course, you can visit Siena at any time of the year and get lost in its grandeur, as it’s only about an hour’s drive or train ride from Florence. But the city is much more than a perch in the lush Tuscan countryside, and nowhere is this better experienced than through the foods that originate there. Get a dish of <em>pici</em>, a thick rope of flour and water pasta that originates in Siena, and is prepared with a variety of meat sauces typical of the region. If salumi is your weakness, the rare Cinta Senese breed that originates from Siena produces some of the most coveted cured meats in the country and is still only reared in the area.</p>
<div id="attachment_62600" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62600" class="wp-image-62600 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/italy-perfect-panforte-traditional-italian-christmas-desserts.jpg" alt="Italy foodie" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/italy-perfect-panforte-traditional-italian-christmas-desserts.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/italy-perfect-panforte-traditional-italian-christmas-desserts-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/italy-perfect-panforte-traditional-italian-christmas-desserts-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/italy-perfect-panforte-traditional-italian-christmas-desserts-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/italy-perfect-panforte-traditional-italian-christmas-desserts-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/italy-perfect-panforte-traditional-italian-christmas-desserts-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62600" class="wp-caption-text">Traditional <em>panforte</em> &#8211; a classic Siena sweet.</p></div>
<p>But if you’re in the mood for something sweeter, Siena may just be the paradise you’ve been searching for on your Italian holiday. As one of the most culturally important and wealthiest cities during the medieval period, Siena had access to delicacies like sugar, candied fruits and exotic spices well before other areas. The result is the luscious <strong><em>panforte</em>, </strong>a dense cake made with sugar, honey, butter, nuts and spices like cardamom. The famous <em>cavallucci</em> cookies also originate from Siena and have since become a staple of <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/traditional-italian-christmas-desserts.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Italian Christmas celebrations</a>. Look out for their larger cousin, known as <a href="https://www.tasteatlas.com/berriquocoli" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>berriquocoli</em></a>, and often containing candied cedar. If you still have room, you would be remiss not to try some <em>ricciarelli di Siena</em>, an almond biscuit that is said to have its origins with a Sienese nobleman who returned from the crusades with a similar recipe in hand. Don’t worry, you can always take them to go!</p>

(<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/pnigODapPek" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>While a visit to Florence will definitely involve a spectacular array of museums, shopping and eating, there’s one thing that you can count on being present no matter where you go in the city: great wine. Indeed, with so many great restaurants and wine bars, you&#8217;re never far from a good bottle of wine in Florence, whether you’re staying one of our vacation rentals in the trendy <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/maestro" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oltrarno</a> neighborhood, central <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/florence-piazza-santa-croce.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Santa Croce</a> or a stone’s throw from the fabled <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/s-croce-miravista" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Duomo</a>.</p>
<p>While there’s so much to see and do within the city, there are a number of incredible wineries that are an easy drive away from Florence and could absolutely be reached and enjoyed on a day trip. Many are actually reachable via public transport or offer shuttle services to and from the city so that you don’t have to drive. However, if you are looking for a chance to see the world famous Tuscan countryside, what better way to do it than in pursuit of some of the best wines in the world?</p>
<div id="attachment_62906" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62906" class="wp-image-62906 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-antinori-ivan-franco-bottoni-LmYAeltIaZU-unsplash.jpg" alt="wineries" width="1680" height="1121" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-antinori-ivan-franco-bottoni-LmYAeltIaZU-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-antinori-ivan-franco-bottoni-LmYAeltIaZU-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-antinori-ivan-franco-bottoni-LmYAeltIaZU-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-antinori-ivan-franco-bottoni-LmYAeltIaZU-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-antinori-ivan-franco-bottoni-LmYAeltIaZU-unsplash-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-antinori-ivan-franco-bottoni-LmYAeltIaZU-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62906" class="wp-caption-text">Antinori &#8211; stunning in every way. (<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/LmYAeltIaZU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>If you’re looking for a wine tasting that won’t take you too far outside of Florence, there’s no better place to start than with the <a href="https://www.antinori.it/en/tenuta/estates-antinori/antinori-nel-chianti-classico-estate/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Antinori Estates</a>, the label behind some of the world’s most well-known Italian wines. The vineyards and wineries are located all over Italy, with the largest concentration around the Chianti region and a few within a short drive from Florence. Not all of them are open to the public, but some have a well organized program of visits and experiences that are easy to book online. The <a href="https://www.antinori.it/en/tenuta/estates-antinori/antinori-nel-chianti-classico-estate/#visite" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Antinori nel Chianti Classico </a>winery is particularly noteworthy, as it is a part of the <a href="https://www.winearchitecture.it/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Toscana Wine Architecture</a> association, which contains wineries that have been designed by renowned architects with a particular eye toward sustainability.</p>
<p>However, if you’re looking to take a quick jaunt in between your morning walk on the Arno and aperitivo in San Frediano, <a href="https://www.antinori.it/it/tenuta/tenute-italia/tenuta-monteloro/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tenuta Monteloro</a> is an Antinori estate located in <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/fiesole-the-crown-of-florence.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fiesole</a>, just outside of Florence.</p>
<div id="attachment_62915" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62915" class="size-full wp-image-62915" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-perfect-chianti-tuscany-winery-sign.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1091" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-perfect-chianti-tuscany-winery-sign.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-perfect-chianti-tuscany-winery-sign-300x195.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-perfect-chianti-tuscany-winery-sign-1024x665.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-perfect-chianti-tuscany-winery-sign-768x499.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-perfect-chianti-tuscany-winery-sign-1536x997.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62915" class="wp-caption-text">Head to Chianti for incredible winery experiences.</p></div>
<p>The wonderful thing about wine tasting around Florence is that you’re nestled in the heart of the Chianti region, with all of the rolling hills and panoramic vistas that you’ve dreamt of seeing for yourself. One way to really immerse yourself in this scenery is to visit one of the towns along the <a href="https://www.visittuscany.com/en/itineraries/a-car-tour-along-the-chiantigiana-road/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chiantigiana</a>, the road that takes you through the entire region and runs from Florence to Siena.</p>
<p>If you’re looking for wineries that are an easy day trip, head to Greve in Chianti, known as the gateway to the area. Situated at the crossroads of major pilgrimage routes, the town has always held an important position in Italian civilization; as a wine producing area, it’s almost unmatched for the number of stunning vineyards that you can visit. First and foremost, Greve in Chianti is the birthplace of the explorer Giovanni di Verrazzano, who discovered the bay of New York. The <a href="https://www.verrazzano.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Castello di Verrazzano</a> is also a place of discovery, especially if you’re looking to navigate their famed cellars. They offer daily wine tours and visits to the wine museum, where there are scores of varieties on offer.</p>
<div id="attachment_62911" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62911" class="wp-image-62911 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte.jpg" alt="wineries" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Sanforte-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62911" class="wp-caption-text">Sanforte grapes growing at Villa Calcinaia. (Photo courtesy Villa Calcinaia)</p></div>
<p>The town is a great base for exploring the Chianti region and a well run <a href="https://www.visitchianti.net/municipalities/greve-in-chianti/?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tourism office</a> provides visitors with up-to-date information about transport to and from Florence, wine events and festivals in the region. There is also train and bus service from Florence, making this an easy trip via public transport that allows you to concentrate on the matter at hand: wine tasting. You can also contact some of the larger wineries directly to arrange tastings, visits and meals if you’re looking to stick around a bit longer, and many will have full or half-day experiences.</p>
<div id="attachment_62913" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62913" class="size-full wp-image-62913" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1123" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa-300x201.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa-768x513.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa-1536x1027.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Villa-Calcinaia-Vigna-Contessa-Luisa-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62913" class="wp-caption-text">The Vigna Contessa Luisa at Villa Calcinaia. <p>Visit<a href="https://www.montefioralle.wine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Montefioralle</a> for a tour and tasting from the family who has run the property for generations, which are available by appointment only. Though they don’t serve full meals, the experience of spending time with the family more than makes up for it. If you’re interested in a more extensive menu, <a href="https://www.conticapponi.it/calcinaia/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Villa Calcinaia</a> has a range of options available, all of which are paired with their notable list of Chiantis, Merlots, grappa, and even homemade vinegar. If you’d like to dedicate an entire day to the fine art of wine, visit <a href="https://www.ruffino.it/pages/ruffino-experience" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ruffino</a> in Bagno a Ripoli on your way back to Florence and enjoy tours of the estate, wine tastings and pairings, or full meals in the onsite restaurant.</p>
<div id="attachment_62916" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62916" class="wp-image-62916 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar.jpg" alt="wineries" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/italy-Badia-a-Coltibuono-Historic-cellar-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62916" class="wp-caption-text">Tour the historic cellar at Badia a Coltibuono. <p>Heading down the Chiantigiana means taking in some of the most breathtaking views in Italy, so if you’re looking to head further south there are also plenty of wineries you can choose as a destination that will make for a fantastic day trip from Florence. The <a href="https://www.ricasoli.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ricasoli</a> winery has been around for a modest one thousand years and sits just near the town of Gaiole in Chianti. While the castle and its grounds are impressive enough, they also offer a range of tours that will satisfy any visitor looking to experience nature, history and, of course, wine. Also in Gaiole in Chianti, <a href="https://www.coltibuono.com/en/wine-tasting-chianti/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Badia a Coltibuono</a>—run by the Stucchi Prinetti family for six generations—offers wine tastings, tours and picnics in the countryside.</p>

<p>Italy is an ideal destination any time of year, but if you want to immerse yourself in the beauty of the countryside there’s no better time than the later months of the year. That&#8217;s when the rolling hills of Tuscany come alive with vibrant color and sunny days of sightseeing finish in snug evenings beside the fireplace. Fall is harvest season all over Italy, and if you’re in Tuscany you’ll see the grape and olive picking activity, mountains of chestnuts at the local market and restaurant menus boasting fresh truffles on nearly every plate. When the heat of summer subsides, towns and cities around the country come alive with the markets, festivals and activities that Italians themselves love to enjoy. You’ll be far from the madding crowds of summer travel and have the opportunity to experience some of the most beautiful (and delicious!) <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/what-to-eat-in-italy-in-the-fall.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">traditional Italian autumn foods</a>.</p>
<div id="attachment_62170" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/riposo-verde" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62170" class="wp-image-62170 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-riposo-tuscany-autumn.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-riposo-tuscany-autumn.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-riposo-tuscany-autumn-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-riposo-tuscany-autumn-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-riposo-tuscany-autumn-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-riposo-tuscany-autumn-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-62170" class="wp-caption-text">Find the perfect place to stay in Tuscany this autumn</p></div>
<p>Of course, any great holiday starts with the ideal place to rest your head after a day of taking in the sights, and Tuscany has plenty of fantastic options to base yourself and your friends or family during a vacation. With cities like Florence, <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/siena-daytrip-florence.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Siena</a> or Pisa all within driving distance, you’ll have the option of relaxing in the countryside or taking in the culture of some of the most famous landmarks in Italy. And along the way, there’s so much to see that you might just spend the entire day cruising through the incredible landscape of a region that has captured travelers’ imaginations for centuries. After all, it’s not the destination but the journey that counts.</p>
<div id="attachment_62171" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/gabbiano-villa" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62171" class="wp-image-62171 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-gabbiano-tuscany.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-gabbiano-tuscany.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-gabbiano-tuscany-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-gabbiano-tuscany-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-gabbiano-tuscany-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-gabbiano-tuscany-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-62171" class="wp-caption-text">The Gabbiano Villa nestled in the Tuscan countryside</p></div>
<p>Located in the countryside around Florence, the <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/gabbiano-villa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gabbiano Villa</a> makes getting to the Cradle of the Renaissance a simple affair, with the train station in nearby Figline Valdarno only a few kilometers away. Yet, you may just find yourself too busy wandering the gardens of your villa to notice. The Gabbiano’s manicured property can host up to 10 guests with a private guest cottage giving room for 6 more, and its location on the sumptuous Vecchietto Estate means that you’ll have access to tennis courts, yoga lessons and cooking courses right at your doorstep. However, there is plenty to tempt you out of your nest: the <a href="https://www.virgilio.it/italia/montevarchi/eventi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Valdarno antiques fair</a> comes to Montevarchi on the second Sunday of every month, which is just 15 kilometers from the Villa. For those looking for a little more modern shopping, the <a href="https://luxuryoutletmall.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leccio Outlet</a> offers a full range of luxury and Made in Italy brands that will make your Christmas shopping a breeze. And, of course, both offer international shipping to keep your suitcases from bursting.</p>
<div id="attachment_62163" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/tucano-villa" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62163" class="wp-image-62163 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-tucano-living-room.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-tucano-living-room.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-tucano-living-room-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-tucano-living-room-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-tucano-living-room-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-tucano-living-room-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-62163" class="wp-caption-text">Comfortable living room at the Tucano Villa</p></div>
<p>Also on the Vecchietto Estate, the <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/tucano-villa-and-cottage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tucano Villa and Cottage</a> is perfect for intimate groups of up to 8 guests in the main house and 3 more in the cottage on the property. The sprawling loggia is perfect for alfresco lunches and the traditional Tuscan style living room comes complete with a working fireplace for crisp autumn evenings, and guests can avail themselves of all of the amenities that the estate offers. Along with its location near the best shopping that Italy offers, the Tucano Villa is close to the famous towns of Greve in Chianti and <a href="https://www.visittuscany.com/en/ideas/5-reasons-visit-gaiole-in-chianti/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gaiole in Chianti</a>, which live up to their names by hosting some of the best wineries and producers in all of Italy. Make a day out of visits to both towns, as one naturally leads to the other, and enjoy the market squares that fill up with organic vegetables and foods from the area.  If you’re in the area in October you may just catch the fabulous <a href="https://eroica.cc/en/gaiole" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eroica</a>, a cycling event that began in Gaiole in Chianti and returns there every autumn. Cheer them on from the sidelines with a glass of Chianti Classico in hand!</p>
<div id="attachment_62164" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/maragone-villa" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62164" class="wp-image-62164 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-maragone-tuscany.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-maragone-tuscany.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-maragone-tuscany-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-maragone-tuscany-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-maragone-tuscany-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/italy-perfect-maragone-tuscany-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-62164" class="wp-caption-text">The lovely Maragone Villa immersed in the Tuscan hillsides</p></div>
<p>If you’re looking for all of the amenities of the Vecchietto Estate and a combination of modern comfort and classic Tuscan style, the <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/maragone-villa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Maragone Villa</a> is the perfect refuge for an autumn getaway. It’s tucked away in one of the most exclusive corners of the estate and offers ample space for up to 10 guests to enjoy the privacy and peace that this magical location has to offer. Make it a base for exploring Florence, which is only a short car or train ride away, or plan an excursion to the hilltop town of Arezzo, the medieval city of Siena and the famous leaning tower of Pisa, all of which are reachable within a couple of hours. You’ll see these historic locations at their very best, when locals return from their summer holidays and are happy to share their food, wine and culture with visitors who know that fall is when their cities shine brightest. And after a day spent pounding the cobblestones, return to your sanctuary for a fabulous meal at the Estate’s on-site restaurant, from award-winning chefs.</p>

<p>Tuscany has so much to offer, and the <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/panorama" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Panorama Villa</a> near Montecatini Terme is the perfect example of the idyllic retreats for which the area is so well known. Overlooking the Val di Nievole, or Valley of the Mists, this villa sleeps up to 12 people and offers add-ons like a personal chef, cooking classes and wine tastings. If you manage to peel your eyes from the panoramic views, you can practice your pizza making skills with the stone oven or cozy up by the fireplace in one of the villa’s living rooms. The rustic character of the property is an ideal place to watch the leaves change around the countryside, and once you return from visiting nearby Pistoia and Lucca, you’ll sleep peacefully under the frescoed ceilings and historic wood beams in the bedrooms. Don’t forget to visit the stone chapel on site, and keep your eyes open for the monument to Victor Emmanuel II, the first King of United Italy who once stayed at the villa.</p>

<p>Southern Tuscany remains one of the most under explored areas in the region, and intrepid travelers are rewarded with authentic cuisine and unspoiled views of the majestic Val d’Orcia. <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/riposo-verde" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Riposo Verde</a> near San Casciano dei Bagni is a restored farmhouse overflowing with the charm and classic beauty of Tuscan living. Plus, its position in between Rome and Florence makes it the ideal place to discover the hidden sights that will surprise even the most seasoned traveler. The fall season is absolutely unmissable in this corner of Tuscany, as you’ll be able to take advantage of the many spas and thermal baths that dot the countryside. The town of San Casciano dei Bagni is named for the baths that date from Roman times, and there are numerous thermal parks to choose from for natural spa treatments or an extended soak. The famed <a href="https://www.visittuscany.com/en/attractions/cascate-del-mulino-hot-springs-in-saturnia/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cascate dei Mulini </a>are one of the most recognizable sights in Italy, and they’re within an hour’s drive of the villa, perfect for a day trip to the southern corner of Tuscany. Spend the day relaxing in the natural pools that the Romans loved and then duck into any of the authentic trattorias around the area, where you’ll find truffles that hunters deliver from their morning walks. There’s no better way to celebrate the fine art of <em>dolce far niente. </em></p>

<p>Tuscany is one of the world’s most desirable destinations, but it is so much more than a spot for a summer holiday. The fall months, when the weather starts to cool and the seasons change, is perhaps the most glorious time to visit the area. Enjoy the scenery and cuisine that make it so famous, and explore the cities that hold the key to Italian history without the rush of crowds and the heat of the summer. For those in the know, autumn in Tuscany is the place to be!</p>

<p>Florence is a city of beautiful squares, from the buzz of Piazza del Duomo to sweeping views from Piazzale Michelangelo and the grace of Piazza Santa Croce. A crossroads of history, culture and faith, Piazza Santa Croce is one of the most captivating squares in Florence. Surrounded by historic buildings and home to the remarkable Basilica of Santa Croce, it’s a perfectly romantic spot to sit and admire the church, take a closer look at artistic details, like the 17th-century frescoes decorating the Palazzo dell’Antella, or simply soak up the Tuscan sun with some fine people watching. Come along on a journey as we explore the history of this beautiful piazza and share our favorite things to see and do while in Santa Croce.</p>
<div id="attachment_61976" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61976" class="size-full wp-image-61976" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-piazza-santa-croce.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-piazza-santa-croce.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-piazza-santa-croce-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-piazza-santa-croce-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-piazza-santa-croce-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-piazza-santa-croce-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61976" class="wp-caption-text">The Basilica of Santa Croce (<a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Badia_fiorentina,_campanile,_veduta_da,_santa_croce_01.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Credit</a>)</p></div>
<h2>From Island to Grand Piazza</h2>
<p>Although it seems unlikely today, the Santa Croce area was originally an island formed by two branches of the Arno river. When the Franciscans arrived in Florence in the early 13th century, they chose this isolated and marshy area outside the city walls to found a church. The sparsely populated area made it possible to create a large space to welcome the many faithful who would gather to hear the sermons. And so, Piazza Santa Croce was born. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the large size and rectangular shape of the piazza made it a popular spot for festivals, jousting, and city celebrations as well as religious celebrations connected to the church.</p>
<p>The piazza is now surrounded on three sides by historic buildings, many dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The varied architectural styles and warm Tuscan hues only adds to the charm of the piazza. In front of the basilica, just to the left of the facade, stands an impressive monument celebrating Dante Alighieri. The large statue of Italy’s beloved poet was placed in the center of the piazza in 1865 on the 600th anniversary of his birth. It was later moved to its current location for the revival of Calcio Storico, a wildly fun game that we&#8217;ll return to soon.</p>
<p>Before going into the basilica, stop on the north side of the piazza not far from the statue of Dante and look up on the buildings for the plaque marking the high point of the disastrous and deadly flood of 1966. It&#8217;s a reminder that the Arno isn&#8217;t very far away at all.</p>
<div id="attachment_61978" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61978" class="size-full wp-image-61978" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-dante_santa-croce.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-dante_santa-croce.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-dante_santa-croce-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-dante_santa-croce-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-dante_santa-croce-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-dante_santa-croce-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61978" class="wp-caption-text">Statue of Dante in Piazza Santa Croce (<a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Monument_to_Dante_Alighieri_in_front_of_Santa_Croce_angle_view_(Florence).jpg?uselang=it" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Credit</a>)</p></div>
<h2>Basilica of Santa Croce</h2>
<p>Overlooking the piazza is the church that gives the square its name: the <a href="https://www.santacroceopera.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Basilica of Santa Croce</a>. In 1933, Pope Pius XI recognized Santa Croce as a basilica, which is a title of honor for churches of historic and religious importance. Santa Croce certainly checks both those boxes! It is the largest Franciscan church in the world, one of Italy&#8217;s artistic treasures and serves as a pantheon of many of Italy&#8217;s most illustrious people. A visit inside makes one understand firsthand the idea of <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/shortcuts/2018/dec/18/stendhal-syndrome-botticelli-the-birth-of-venus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stendhal Syndrome</a>, also called Florence Syndrome, when the intensity of art becomes a swirling experience that overwhelms. In was right in the Basilica of Santa Croce in 1817 that the French writer Stendhal had the heart racing, dizzying experience. But, don&#8217;t worry, while a visit to Santa Croce is quite an experience, it&#8217;s an overwhelmingly beautiful one.</p>
<p>The first glimpse you&#8217;ll likely have of Santa Croce is the striking facade. While the church itself was founded in the 13th century, quite possibly by St. Francis himself, the ornate facade we see today is a 19th-century Gothic Revival design by the architect Niccolò Matas. It was built from 1857-1863, with the finishing touches complete in 1865 so as to be timed with the placement of the statue of Dante. If you&#8217;re thinking it&#8217;s a bit strange that the church didn&#8217;t have a finished facade for over 500 years, it turns out that it wasn&#8217;t an uncommon occurrence. Before the 19th century, Santa Croce had an unfinished stone facade much like the <a href="https://www.theflorentine.net/2018/09/19/san-lorenzo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Basilica of San Lorenzo</a> in Florence that lacks a facade even today. The impressive facade of Florence&#8217;s <a href="https://duomo.firenze.it/en/discover/cathedral" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Duomo</a> was also a 19th century addition. In an age of architectural revivalism, Matas&#8217;s design for Santa Croce was inspired by the great Gothic cathedrals in Siena and Orvieto. However, on Santa Croce&#8217;s facade you&#8217;ll notice a prominent Star of David at the top. There are a number of theories about the star design, but the 6-pointed star has been used in many religions including Christianity.</p>
<div id="attachment_61980" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61980" class="size-full wp-image-61980" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-santa-croce-facade.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1260" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-santa-croce-facade.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-santa-croce-facade-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-santa-croce-facade-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-santa-croce-facade-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-santa-croce-facade-1536x1152.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61980" class="wp-caption-text">Detail of the Santa Croce facade (<a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bas%C3%ADlica_de_la_Santa_Cruz,_fachada,_Florencia,_Italia,_2019_06.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>Navigating the interior of the basilica is impressive in so many ways. It&#8217;s home to incredible frescoes by Giotto, artwork by Italian masters, tombs for the “gods” of Italy, its most important scientists, artists, writers and important figures, a peaceful cloister and the famous Pazzi Chapel, which is a serene example of high Renaissance architecture. Stepping inside the soaring nave, the sobriety of the Gothic design serves as a framework with large arches showcasing monuments and tombs lining each side of the nave. Among the “stars of Italy” memorialized with monuments are Galileo and Michelangelo, as well as Renaissance architect Leon Battista Alberti, Florentine artist Lorenzo Ghiberti, Niccolò Macchiavelli and Gioacchino Rossini.</p>
<p>The burials for Galileo and Michelangelo both have fascinating stories. <a href="https://www.theflorentine.net/2017/10/12/michelangelo-tomb-facts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michelangelo’s body was stolen</a> from his original burial place in Rome by his nephew to bring it to Florence. Because of his blasphemous scientific theories, Galileo was first buried in an inconspicuous place. When he was finally moved to a more formal tomb about 100 years later, they discovered two additional bodies with him! One was his pupil and curator and the other was believed to be his beloved daughter who had been separated from him for life because she was a cloistered nun and he was long under house arrest for the blasphemy of asserting that the earth revolved around the sun. Shockingly, this sentence of blasphemy wasn&#8217;t lifted <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1992/10/31/world/after-350-years-vatican-says-galileo-was-right-it-moves.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">until 1992</a>! If you&#8217;re curious to find out more, the book <em>Galileo&#8217;s Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith, and Love</em> by Dava Sobel is an excellent read.</p>
<div id="attachment_61981" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61981" class="size-full wp-image-61981" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-santa-croce-interior.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-santa-croce-interior.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-santa-croce-interior-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-santa-croce-interior-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-santa-croce-interior-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-santa-croce-interior-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61981" class="wp-caption-text">The soaring nave of Santa Croce (<a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Florencia_-_Firenze_-_Basilica_de_la_Santa_Cruz_-_Basilica_di_Santa_Croce_-_Interior_-_01.jpg?uselang=it" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>In addition to the tombs and memorials, Santa Croce is a treasure trove of work by some of Italy&#8217;s most famous artists. Seeing the 14th-century frescoes by Giotto in person is certain to be a highlight. Often referred to as the father of European painting and one of the most influential artists of his time, Giotto&#8217;s frescoes in the Bardi and Peruzzi chapels of Santa Croce are incredible examples of his work that capture a moment in late Gothic art when elements of the Renaissance period to come were starting to appear. Unfortunately, the frescoes in both chapels were covered in quicklime in the 1700s and not uncovered again until the mid 19th century. Restoration work (with varying levels of success) has left the frescoes faint and damaged in places, yet this somehow adds to the experience &#8211; as if you&#8217;ve glimpsed something rare that was almost lost to time.</p>
<div id="attachment_61998" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61998" class="size-full wp-image-61998" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-giotto-bardi-chapel.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1074" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-giotto-bardi-chapel.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-giotto-bardi-chapel-300x192.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-giotto-bardi-chapel-1024x655.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-giotto-bardi-chapel-768x491.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-giotto-bardi-chapel-1536x982.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61998" class="wp-caption-text">Giotto&#8217;s St. Francis before the Sultan (Trial by Fire) in the Bardi Chapel (<a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Giotto,_cappella_bardi,_la_prova_del_fuoco_1328_450x280_copia.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>Don&#8217;t miss the 14th-century frescoes in the Baroncelli chapel by Taddeo Gaddi and the impressive fresco cycle around the main altar by Agnolo Gaddi, the son of Taddeo, depicting scenes from The Legend of the True Cross. Completed around 1380, they form a captivating backdrop, along with the stained glass windows, to the gilded altarpiece and the 14th-century cross attributed to <span id="elmTitle" class="field_Title fontLight">Maestro di Figline. Every single nook of Santa Croce houses treasures to discover, so be sure to plan plenty of time to visit inside the church. </span></p>
<div id="attachment_61983" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61983" class="size-full wp-image-61983" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-pazzi-chapel-santa-croce.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1850" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-pazzi-chapel-santa-croce.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-pazzi-chapel-santa-croce-272x300.jpg 272w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-pazzi-chapel-santa-croce-930x1024.jpg 930w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-pazzi-chapel-santa-croce-768x846.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/florence-pazzi-chapel-santa-croce-1395x1536.jpg 1395w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61983" class="wp-caption-text">The sublime Pazzi Chapel</p></div>
<p>After exploring the nave of the basilica, head outside to visit the cloisters and experience the Pazzi Chapel designed by Renaissance master architect Brunelleschi. Although commissioned in 1429 for the project, work didn&#8217;t begin on the chapel until 1442 and wasn&#8217;t quite complete at the time of Brunelleschi&#8217;s death in 1446. The final form was never realized, largely due to the disputes between the Pazzi family and its rival the Medici family. However, the essence of the chapel&#8217;s design, with its harmonious balance and geometric forms based on circles and squares, heavily influenced architectural design to come. Spare and silent, the chapel invites meditation and a moment of calm.</p>
<p>From the first cloister, you can explore further in the basilica&#8217;s Museum of the Opera (Works) of Santa Croce and beyond that Brunelleschi’s cloister. Before leaving, don&#8217;t miss Cimabue&#8217;s 13th-century cross, Donatello&#8217;s gilded bronze statue of St. Louis of Toulouse made in the 15th century for the Orsanmichele church and many more incredible works of art on display in the museum.</p>

<h2>Calcio Storico</h2>
<p>In June, Piazza Santa Croce is home to a uniquely Florentine sport experience. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcio_Fiorentino" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Calcio Storico</a>, also called <em>Calcio fiorentino</em>, is a game that started in the 16th century. It&#8217;s considered a precursor to soccer as we know it today even if the game is more reminiscent of an intense rugby match. Soccer is called <em>calcio</em> in Italian, and the game that Italians adore seems to have started right here – in Piazza Santa Croce. While it may be centuries old, seeing the Calcio Storico today is an astounding experience. After a historical parade, buckle up for the game to begin. Don’t worry too much about the rules since there aren’t that many &#8211; and almost everything is allowed. Florence is divided into four quarters with a team of 27 men for each area. Somewhat like modern day gladiators, the players attack in all forms (martial arts are allowed) to score points by getting the ball through the goals at the ends of the field. No substitutions are allowed in the often brutal 50 minute game.</p>
<div id="attachment_61971" style="width: 1210px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61971" class="size-full wp-image-61971" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/calcio-storico-florence.jpg" alt="" width="1200" height="800" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/calcio-storico-florence.jpg 1200w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/calcio-storico-florence-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/calcio-storico-florence-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/calcio-storico-florence-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/calcio-storico-florence-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61971" class="wp-caption-text">An intense Calcio Storico game (<a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Calcio_Storico_partita_1.JPG" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>To experience the Calcio Storico for yourself, plan to visit Florence in June. A playing field made of sand is created in Piazza Santa Croce and games begin with semifinals in early June.  Locals scoop up the tickets to the bleachers for the final game, which takes place on June 24th, the festival day of St. John the Baptist, Florence’s patron saint. <h2>Events in Piazza Santa Croce</h2>
<p>With such a scenic setting, events and concerts take place throughout the year in Piazza Santa Croce. Our guests are often thrilled to find they have a perfect view for performances by artists like Il Volo, Jethro Tull, Leonard Cohen as well as political and dramatic presentations and large scale art installations. For a small taste of the magical experience, enjoy this stunning performance by the young Italian operatic pop trio Il Volo performing <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCy5lMnzKWQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nessun Dorma</a> in Piazza Santa Croce.</p>
<p>At the end of November the piazza is transformed into a festive Christmas market complete with wooden stalls selling gifts, food and more during the holiday season. It&#8217;s modeled after the German style Christmas markets and is complete with beer, pretzels and oompah music. You&#8217;ll find Italian crafts as well as products from around Europe. It&#8217;s a fun Italian Christmas experience with the beautifully lit up facade of Santa Croce creating an unforgettable backdrop.</p>

<h2>Dining &amp; Shopping in Santa Croce</h2>
<p>From tiny trattorias to local haunts and excellent cafés, tempting choices abound in the Santa Croce neighborhood. If you’re staying in an Italy Perfect apartment rental in Florence, or just enjoy a good market, you’ll want to explore the <a href="https://mercatosantambrogio.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sant’Ambrogio market</a> nearby at Piazza Lorenzo Ghiberti. It’s hard to miss as it’s located in a 19th-century iron and glass market building designed by the architect Giuseppe Mengoni, famous for the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade in Milan. The market takes places daily Monday to Saturday from 7am-2pm and has stalls both inside the market building and outside surrounding it on three sides. You’ll find everything you need for cooking, from fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, and fresh bread to stalls selling flowers, vintage clothes, and the classic leather goods.</p>
<p>Start your day in Santa Croce by stopping in at <a href="https://www.finisterraefirenze.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Finisterrae</a> at the corner of Piazza Santa Croce (near the statue of Dante) for something sweet. This restaurant and pizzeria is also a great pasticceria and they make what seems like 20 flavors of fresh <em>cornetti</em> (croissants) every morning along with tempting pastries. For another excellent spot right on Piazza Santa Croce, head to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ristoranteboccadama/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boccadama</a> located in a historic building on the piazza. Grab a spot at one of the outdoor tables or enjoy a meal in the cozy dining area lined with wine bottles. The menu has Tuscan classics like <em>Pappardelle al cinghiale</em>, thick pasta noodles with wild board, and, of course, the traditional <em>bistecca alla fiorentina</em>.</p>
<p>After one visit, you’ll find yourself going back again and again to <a href="http://vivoli.it" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vivoli</a> to keep sampling their delicious and innovative gelato flavors. Known around the world, this gelateria is located just a short stroll from Piazza Santa Croce and has been family-run since 1930. You’ll enjoy the pleasantly casual and local vibe.</p>
<p>Shoppers will love the choices when it comes to leather goods while exploring the Santa Croce neighborhood. You&#8217;ll find shops around the piazza and lining the surrounding streets, but if you want to dig deeper into the history of the leather working tradition in Florence (our tip: yes you do!) then be sure to visit the <a href="https://scuoladelcuoio.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Scuola del Cuoio</a>. Founded in 1949 within the grounds of the Santa Croce Basilica, it is one of Italy&#8217;s leading leather working schools. Guided visits are fascinating, but you can also just stop in to shop for leather products made on site and to get a glimpse of artisans at work. The entrance to the Scuola del Cuoio is located along Via San Giuseppe just past the side ticket entrance to the basilica.</p>

<p>These days while we&#8217;re all dreaming of being able to return to Italy, there&#8217;s one place that&#8217;s especially good at capturing our hearts and imagination: Tuscany. Isn&#8217;t there just something magical about those picture-perfect landscapes of rolling hills dotted with villages, vineyards, and rows of cypress tress? To inspire your future travel plans and keep Italy close to your heart, we&#8217;re sharing 5 of our favorite hill towns in Tuscany. Leave a comment below with your favorite town in Tuscany!</p>
<p><span id="more-61839"></span></p>
<h2>Montepulciano</h2>
<p>Perhaps one of the most quintessential Tuscan towns, Montepulciano beautifully blends medieval elements with an elegant Renaissance style. In the historic center, stop to admire the Palazzo Comunale designed by Michelozzo, which might remind you of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Of course, a visit to Montepulciano isn&#8217;t complete without trying the famous wines from the region like the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG. This entire area is perfect for wine enthusiasts and you can find out more with our <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wine-tours-in-tuscany-4-itinerary-ideas.html">4 Itinerary Ideas for Wine Tours in Tuscany</a>. For a truly unique experience, plan a visit to Montepulciano on the last Sunday in August for the Bravìo delle Botti festival. The 8 historic districts of Montepulciano compete in an intense challenge to roll 176-pound barrels uphill through town. Along with that unusual feat is a parade of historic costumed figures and flag throwers.</p>
<p><strong>Where to Stay:</strong> Looking to savor those iconic postcard views of Tuscany&#8217;s rolling hills? Our lovely <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/borgo-beco">Borgo Beco</a> is just one of the properties available on the Borgo estate surrounded by the unspoiled southeastern Tuscan countryside.</p>
<div id="attachment_61843" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61843" class="wp-image-61843 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-Monteriggioni.jpg" alt="View of Monteriggioni in Tuscany" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-Monteriggioni.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-Monteriggioni-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-Monteriggioni-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-Monteriggioni-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-Monteriggioni-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61843" class="wp-caption-text">The medieval walled town of Monteriggioni <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Monteriggioni,_veduta_delle_mura_02.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(Credit)</a></p></div>
<h2>Monteriggioni</h2>
<p>In the rolling hills northwest of Siena sits a medieval marvel of a town called Monteriggioni. The surrounding hillsides covered in rows of grape vines and olive tree completes the idyllic scene. What makes this town especially unique is that it&#8217;s completely enclosed within 13th-century walls punctuated with 14 guard towers that form what looks like a crown from the hillside below. The impressive sight of Monteriggioni&#8217;s wall and towers was even mentioned by Dante in the <em>Divine Comedy</em> (Inferno, Canto XXXI, 40-44). Founded in the early 13th century, Monteriggioni was built by Siena as a defensive outpost against their rivals the Republic of Florence. Inside these massive wall is small medieval village full of charm. While visiting, don&#8217;t miss the chance to walk along the walls around Monteriggioni.</p>
<div id="attachment_61844" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61844" class="size-full wp-image-61844" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-san-gimignano.jpg" alt="View of San Gimignano in Tuscany" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-san-gimignano.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-san-gimignano-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-san-gimignano-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-san-gimignano-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-san-gimignano-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61844" class="wp-caption-text">San Gimignano with its famous towers</p></div>
<h2>San Gimignano</h2>
<p>Easily one of gems of Tuscany&#8211;if not all of Italy&#8211;the hilltop village of San Gimignano is easily spotted in the distance by its many stone towers. While the 14 towers in town seem like a lot today, it&#8217;s nothing compared to the town at the height of its glory when there were 72 towers in this small hilltop town! Each tower was part of a private fortified home, and its in impressive experience to imagine so much protection being required in the Middle Ages. San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with one of the best preserved medieval historic centers in Italy. Besides admiring the towers, plan to visit to the Collegiata, the Romanesque era ex-cathedral, to see the the incredible frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli and Domenico Ghirlandaio. Next, stop by the Palazzo Comunale to see the collection of 13th-15th century art by Sienese and Florentine painters and to climb to the top of the 14th-century Torre Grossa for an unforgettable view overlooking the town and countryside. Given its remarkable history and beauty, you won&#8217;t be alone while visiting San Gimignano, but it&#8217;s an experience not to be missed in Tuscany.</p>
<div id="attachment_61845" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61845" class="wp-image-61845 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-anghiari.jpg" alt="View of Anghiari in Tuscany" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-anghiari.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-anghiari-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-anghiari-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-anghiari-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-anghiari-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61845" class="wp-caption-text">The hilltop town of Anghiari <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anghiari_-_Veduta_01.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(Credit)</a></p></div>
<h2>Anghiari</h2>
<p>As off the beaten path as San Gimignano is famous, the hilltop town of Anghiari is located about 16 miles east of Arezzo in the Valtiberina Valley. Considered one of the <em>Borghi più belli d&#8217;Italia</em>, or Most Beautiful Villages of Italy, Anghiari holds a good deal of fascinating history within its early 13th-century walls. With its strategic hilltop location and alliance with Republic of Florence in the 15th century, the fortified town was the setting for the intense Battle of Anghiari on June 29, 1440 between the Republic of Florence and the Duchy of Milan. The day-long battle was an important victory for the Florentines in Tuscany and was later the subject of a Leonardo da Vinci fresco painted for the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Unfortunately, the fresco did not survive due to Leonoardo&#8217;s experimental technique, but a later drawing by Peter Paul Rubens inspired by the fresco hangs in the Louvre Museum.</p>
<p><strong>Where to Stay:</strong> Curious to explore this lovely part of Tuscany? Our <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/romanza-villa">Romanza Villa</a> is located only about a 20 minutes drive south in the verdant countryside not far from where Tuscany meets Umbria. This 3-story stone villa is nestled in 2.5 acres of gardens and features a pool for complete relaxation surrounded by the beauty of Tuscany.</p>
<div id="attachment_61848" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61848" class="size-full wp-image-61848" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-cortona.jpg" alt="Piazza della Repubblica in Cortona" width="1680" height="1243" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-cortona.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-cortona-300x222.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-cortona-1024x758.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-cortona-768x568.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/italy-perfect-tuscany-cortona-1536x1136.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61848" class="wp-caption-text">Cortona&#8217;s charming Piazza della Repubblica</p></div>
<h2>Cortona</h2>
<p>This hill town hardly needs an introduction as it was firmly placed on the map as the setting for <em>Under the Tuscan Sun</em> by Frances Mayes. Located about 20 miles south of Arezzo, Cortona has a picturesque setting overlooking rolling hills with Lake Trasimeno in the distance. Although well known, the town is absolutely charming and offers a surprising amount of artistic richness in addition to its quaint piazzas and winding streets. Find a seat at a café in the town&#8217;s Piazza della Repubblica, with a striking staircase leading up to the Palazzo Comunale, and enjoy some fine people watching. Then stroll just a few minutes to the Diocesan Museum to see the remarkable Annunciation painted by Fra Angelico along with an excellent collection, including many works by <span class="aCOpRe">Renaissance</span> artist Luca Signorelli who was born in Cortona. Step further back in time at MAEC Museum of the Etruscan Academy and the Town of Cortona, which holds a rich archaeological collection from the Etruscan civilization. Very fitting for a city that is still protected by Etruscan era walls.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re staying in Florence and want to get a taste of the Tuscan hill town experience but don&#8217;t have a lot of time, don&#8217;t miss a chance to visit Fiesole. Located just outside Florence and easy to reach by taxi or bus, this hilltop town was founded by the Etruscans and fortified in the early 14th century. With its fine views overlooking Florence, it was a favorite haunt of the Medici family and is home to the Medici Villa designed by Michelozzo and built from 1458 and 1461. From Etruscan ruins to an ancient Roman theater and refined 18th and 19th-century villas, Fiesole has more to offer than just panoramic views. <p><strong>Where to Stay: </strong>Everything we love about Fiesole is perfectly captured with a stay at our <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/divine-dante">Divine Dante</a> villa. Surrounded by peaceful gardens, this exquisite villa has an incredible history, with connections to the poet Dante Alighieri and later the family of Beatrice, the object of Dante&#8217;s desire and source of inspiration of Dante&#8217;s works <em>Vita Nuova</em> and the <em>Divine Comedy</em>.</p>
