<p>When in Venice, there’s no better way to experience the local flavor—literally and culturally—than by having <em>cicchetti</em>. These small, tasty bites are an essential part of Venetian life, often enjoyed with a glass of wine or a spritz during aperitivo. Whether you&#8217;re nibbling on <em>bruschetta</em> topped with fresh seafood, cured meats or creamy spreads, <em>cicchetti</em> are quite literally the delicious antipasto to <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/add-these-traditional-foods-in-venice-to-your-culinary-bucket-list.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Venice’s rich culinary traditions</a>.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-64295" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/italy-perfect-cicchetti-2024.jpg" alt="cicchetti" width="1680" height="1420" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/italy-perfect-cicchetti-2024.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/italy-perfect-cicchetti-2024-300x254.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/italy-perfect-cicchetti-2024-1024x866.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/italy-perfect-cicchetti-2024-768x649.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/italy-perfect-cicchetti-2024-1536x1298.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></p>
<h3>What Are <em>Cicchetti</em>?</h3>
<p><em>Cicchetti</em> (pronounced chi-KET-tee) are Venice’s answer to tapas &#8211; small, shareable plates typically served in local wine bars called <em>bacari</em>. They can include everything from marinated vegetables, polenta with seafood to savory meatballs or grilled fish. These bite-sized snacks have long been a way for Venetians to enjoy a light meal with friends, especially before dinner. It’s an informal, social experience, where locals gather around the bar, chatting and sipping on a glass of wine or prosecco.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-64294" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/italy-perfect-venice-cicchetti-prosecco.jpg" alt="cicchetti" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/italy-perfect-venice-cicchetti-prosecco.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/italy-perfect-venice-cicchetti-prosecco-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/italy-perfect-venice-cicchetti-prosecco-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/italy-perfect-venice-cicchetti-prosecco-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/italy-perfect-venice-cicchetti-prosecco-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/italy-perfect-venice-cicchetti-prosecco-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></p>
<h3>The <em>Cicchetti</em> Tradition</h3>
<p>Cicchetti are closely tied to Venice’s tradition of <em>ombra</em>, which refers to a small glass of wine enjoyed with friends. The word <em>ombra</em> means “shadow,” hearkening back to when wine sellers would move with the shadow of St. Mark’s bell tower to keep cool while selling their wine. Today, this Venetian ritual is a casual, cherished part of everyday life &#8211; a perfect excuse to pause, relax and savor the moment.</p>

<h3>Where to Enjoy <em>Cicchetti</em> in Venice</h3>
<p>Venice is dotted with <em>bacari</em> where you can try <em>cicchetti</em> and part of the fun is stumbling across a tempting one while meandering along canals and crossing bridges. To get you started, here are a few of our favorite spots:</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/NppgmLoiKMQ2PWnw8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cantina Do Mori</a> – One of the oldest <em>bacari</em> in Venice, Cantina Do Mori offers an authentic taste of traditional <em>cicchetti</em> in a rustic, intimate setting. Don’t miss their savory <em>sarde in saor</em> (sweet and sour sardines) or rich cheese plates.</li>
<li><a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/VYtTsgx9SS57JuT78" target="_blank" rel="noopener">All’Arco</a> – Tucked away in a quiet alley, All’Arco is a local favorite where you’ll find a fantastic selection of crostini topped with everything from creamy cod to smoked meats. The friendly, family-run atmosphere adds to its charm.</li>
<li><a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/ge4cKhSYkLt14GEM6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Osteria Al Squero</a> – With views overlooking the canal and a nearby gondola workshop, this spot offers a wonderful range of <em>cicchetti</em> and an ideal location to unwind with a glass of wine and some people-watching.</li>
<li><a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/Txt5JZiNwpxsqEjFA" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Al Merca</a> – Located near the Rialto Market, Al Merca serves up a delectable array of <em>cicchetti</em> perfect for a snack on the go. Grab a small bite and a glass of wine, and enjoy it by the bustling market stalls.</li>
<li><a href="https://www.altimon.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Al Timon</a> – Situated along a canal in the Cannaregio district, Al Timon is popular for its lively atmosphere and great selection. You can enjoy your <em>cicchetti </em>on their rustic wooden boat or along the canal &#8211; always a memorable Venetian dining experience!</li>

<p>Venice is one of the world&#8217;s most romantic cities. If you are lucky enough to visit in the winter, you can enjoy empty <em>campos</em> and misty canals. Most days will be warm enough to have a spritz in the sunshine but you might encounter a few raindrops. Spending time in a beautiful <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/rentals/venice/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Italy Perfect apartment</a> during the quieter season is one of the best ways to help Venice remain a living, thriving city. Prepare for a wet day with our suggestions of what to do on a rainy day in Venice.</p>
<p>Did you know? In Venetian dialect, the fog that envelops the lagoon in the winter is called<em> caigo.</em><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
<h3>A Word About Acqua Alta</h3>
<p>Water is central to life in Venice. Venetians are used to <i><a href="https://www.veneziaunica.it/en/content/high-water" target="_blank" rel="noopener">aqua alta</a>. </i>This phenomenon happens usually in the autumn and winter months when a high tide coincides with a strong <em>Scirocco</em> or <em>Bora</em> wind. A regular rainy day in Venice is not what causes <em>aqua alta</em>. Each part of town is affected differently. Piazza San Marco is one of the lowest parts of the city and floods regularly. The high water only lasts a few hours and long elevated walkways, <i>passarelle,</i> are set up in areas that get higher water so you won’t get your feet wet.</p>

<h3>Art Gazing in Palazzos<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></h3>
<p>Put away your umbrella and peek into some of the glittering palaces that line the Grand Canal with a visit to some incredible collections of art. Once the home of art collector Peggy Guggenheim, the<a href="http://www.guggenheim-venice.it/inglese/default.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Palazzo Venier dei Leoni</a> and garden is now filled with her personal collection of contemporary art and sculpture. The Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana have been transformed with vast soaring spaces to host exhibitions and the François Pinault’s private collection of contemporary art. The Cosmati floors on the canal level of the <a href="http://www.cadoro.org/?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Galleria Giorgio Franchetti all Ca’D’oro</a> are magnificent. In the<span class="Apple-converted-space">  </span>stunning Baroque palace <a href="http://carezzonico.visitmuve.it/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ca’Rezzonico</a>, look up to see the cherub filled Tiepolo ceilings. The Grimani family’s residence and collection of sculptures inside the the <a href="https://polomusealeveneto.beniculturali.it/musei/museo-di-palazzo-grimani" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Palazzo Grimani</a> is an intoxicating mix of classical architecture, mannerist frescoes and archeology. The <a href="https://correr.visitmuve.it/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Museo Corer</a> is often overlooked despite its location on the edge of Piazza San Marco. Inside are rooms filled with art and the history of Venice and a cafe with one of the best views in town.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
<div id="attachment_63654" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63654" class="size-full wp-image-63654" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/venice-cafe-winter-kate-townsend-hEC6zxdFF0M-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1116" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/venice-cafe-winter-kate-townsend-hEC6zxdFF0M-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/venice-cafe-winter-kate-townsend-hEC6zxdFF0M-unsplash-300x199.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/venice-cafe-winter-kate-townsend-hEC6zxdFF0M-unsplash-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/venice-cafe-winter-kate-townsend-hEC6zxdFF0M-unsplash-768x510.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/venice-cafe-winter-kate-townsend-hEC6zxdFF0M-unsplash-1536x1020.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/venice-cafe-winter-kate-townsend-hEC6zxdFF0M-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63654" class="wp-caption-text">Don&#8217;t miss the classic <em>aperitivo</em> experience in Venice! <h3>Stop for a Snack and a Glass of Wine</h3>
<p>One of the many great things about Venice is<em> cicchetti.</em> These are small snacks that are served throughout the day with a glass of prosecco, wine or a spritz. There are lots of <em>baccari</em>, the Venetian word for places that serve <em>cicchetti</em> near the Rialto Market but they are traditionally offer only places to stand. The cozy <a href="http://www.naranzaria.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Naranzaria</a> serves wonderful bites of cured meat and local cheeses with views of the Grand Canal.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>

<h3>A Spot of Shopping</h3>
<p>Over five centuries the grand marble palace on the Grand Canal near the Rialto Bridge has been a storage warehouse and barracks for German merchants, a customs house under Napoleon, and one of the cities main post offices. Today the space known now as<span class="Apple-converted-space">  </span><a href="https://www.dfs.com/en/venice" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T Fondaco dei Tedeschi</a> has been transformed into a elegant department store with floors dedicated to Italian wine and gourmet foods, shoes, bags jewelry and cosmetics. The finest Italian and international luxury brands are represented.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> Another perk that is available here for serious shoppers is the onsite tax refund office. </span></p>
<p>If your energy is flagging there is a small bar on the ground floor where you can grab a quick cup of coffee and a sandwich or pastry. There is a cafe in the center of the building. Run by the Alajmo brothers of the famous Gan Caffe Quadri in Piazza San Marco the cafe is open all day so you can have a late morning pot of tea or an evening meal here.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
<p>There is also a small exhibition space on the top floor that hosts contemporary art shows. If the rain stops book a slot online for 15 minutes on the roof for a spectacular view over the Grand Canal.</p>

<h3>Sip and Savor Piazza Life</h3>
<p>Venice’s grandest cafes ring the only Piazza in the city. In warmer months there is outside seating and orchestras playing. All of which come with a hefty, but worth it surcharge. On a gloomy day settle into a velvet banquet in a mirror panels room at <a href="https://www.caffeflorian.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cafe Florian</a>, considered to be the oldest cafe in Europe, or cross over to<a href="https://www.alajmo.it/grancaffe-quadri#" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Gran Caffe Quadri</a>’s pastel rooms for a spritz served in a glass made in nearby Murano. If you are hungry, there is a Michelin starred restaurant upstairs. <span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></p>
<p>Did you know? Piazza San Marco is the only <em>piazza</em> in Venice. All other public squares are called <em>campo</em>.</p>

<h2>Florence: Where Renaissance Art Meets Holiday Magic</h2>
<p>In Florence, the historic city center comes alive with twinkling lights and festive markets for the winter season. If you&#8217;re visiting during the Christmas holidays, <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/florence-piazza-santa-croce.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Piazza Santa Croce</a> hosts a traditional Christmas market, offering handmade crafts, local delicacies and artisanal gifts. But the off-season period from November through early spring is a quieter time that&#8217;s the best for exploring Florence&#8217;s many museums, from the world-class collections at the <a href="https://www.uffizi.it/en/the-uffizi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Uffizi</a> to the many smaller <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/6-hidden-gems-in-florence.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hidden gems</a> throughout the city.</p>

<h2>Rome: Winter Wonder Amidst Ancient History</h2>
<p>The Eternal City shines during the winter with holiday lights lining the street adding an extra glow. For Christmas, you can witness the grandeur of St. Peter&#8217;s Square adorned with a towering Christmas tree and nativity scene. Explore Rome&#8217;s iconic landmarks, including the Colosseum, Roman Forum and the Pantheon, without the summer heat and crowds. With so many fine museums to visit for those rainy days, winter is ideal for experiencing Rome&#8217;s history at a leisurely pace. When it&#8217;s time to warm up, head to a café for a steaming cup of rich Italian coffee or hot chocolate or indulge in hearty Roman dishes like <em>pasta carbonara</em> in welcoming trattorias.</p>

(<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/LkmNYeSAX-0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>Every year, travelers from around the world head to Venice to make their own memories of the most unique city in the world. It&#8217;s impossible not to be enchanted by the narrow alleyways, eclectic architecture and, of course, the hundreds of canals that meander through the city. Without the iconic waterways, and the daily rhythm that they inspire, Venice might be just another city. Instead, it is a dream – suspended in time and floating in a universe all its own.</p>
<p>It may seem strange, but visitors to Venice often forget—or neglect to notice at all—that the city was planted in the middle of a large body of water. Venice is surrounded by many islands that have come to life in this incredibly unique environment. The development, history and culture of the area is an interdependent story that can really only be told by venturing beyond the confines of Venice. Many of the islands are uninhabited by humans and serve as a sanctuary for the hundreds of animal species that call this area home. While others have maintained their centuries-old traditions of artisanal craft work and in the process have become popular travel destinations. Still others are a living reminder of the first human settlements in the area, or the agricultural practices that continue to sustain the population today. Each is the story of a world unto itself and yet also integral to the bigger story of the<strong> Venetian Lagoon</strong>.</p>
<div id="attachment_63374" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63374" class="size-full wp-image-63374" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-map-Atlas-Van-der-Hagen-VENETIA.jpg" alt="Venice historic map" width="1680" height="769" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-map-Atlas-Van-der-Hagen-VENETIA.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-map-Atlas-Van-der-Hagen-VENETIA-300x137.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-map-Atlas-Van-der-Hagen-VENETIA-1024x469.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-map-Atlas-Van-der-Hagen-VENETIA-768x352.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-map-Atlas-Van-der-Hagen-VENETIA-1536x703.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63374" class="wp-caption-text">A historic map of Venice and surrounding islands published in 1704. <h2>The Not-So-Ancient Origins of Modern-Day Venice</h2>
<p>Known in Italian as the <em>Laguna di Venezia</em> and in Venetian as<em> Łaguna de Venesia, </em>the Lagoon covers an area of more than 200 square miles on the northeastern border of the Veneto region. The lagoon islands, including Venice, account for less than ten percent of this surface. The vast majority of the lagoon is composed of mud flats, tidal shallows and salt marshes, making it the largest wetland in the entire Mediterranean Basin. Because of its position and connection to the Adriatic Sea, the lagoon can see incredible variations in the water level. The most famous of these tidal peaks, the <em>acqua alta, </em>occurs in Venice between October and January and can cause flooding in parts of the city.</p>
<div id="attachment_63380" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63380" class="wp-image-63380 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-Space-Station-Flight.jpg" alt="Venetian Lagoon from space" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-Space-Station-Flight.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-Space-Station-Flight-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-Space-Station-Flight-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-Space-Station-Flight-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-Space-Station-Flight-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-Space-Station-Flight-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63380" class="wp-caption-text">A stunning view of the Venetian lagoon from the International Space Station. (<a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Space_Station_Flight_Over_Venice.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>Surprisingly, the Venetian Lagoon was only formed in the last seven thousand years, when the final vestiges of the Ice Age flooded the Adriatic coastal plain. Indeed, it is the only surviving waterway from an estuary system that extended from Ravenna to Trieste during the ancient Roman period, and its importance during that period was critical. By the sixth century, tribes were carving up land in what would become Europe, and Romanized people took shelter on the islands, confident that the Huns would not cross the waters to conquer them. Those first settlers perhaps saw the potential for growth in a most unlikely land, as the naturally protected conditions of the lagoon were an essential factor in the rise of the Venetian Republic and its mighty maritime empire.</p>
<div id="attachment_63373" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63373" class="size-full wp-image-63373" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-Torcello-santa-fosca.jpg" alt="Torcello" width="1680" height="1064" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-Torcello-santa-fosca.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-Torcello-santa-fosca-300x190.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-Torcello-santa-fosca-1024x649.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-Torcello-santa-fosca-768x486.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-Torcello-santa-fosca-1536x973.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63373" class="wp-caption-text">The church of Santa Fosca &#8211; one of the beautiful churches on Torcello. (<a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Torcello,_santa_fosca,_esterno_01.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>However, the Venice that we know today didn’t even exist during those first years (or centuries, for that matter): its unique construction upon a mass of wood and mud pilings (known as <em>caranto</em>) would develop over the 1,600 years since its founding in 421AD and the 118 islands that became <em>La Serenissima </em>would take years to complete. Consequently, the earliest settlements in the lagoon were on the island of <strong>Torcello</strong>, which has evidence of being inhabited since the Roman Era. While serving as a shelter for those fleeing the Huns, the population of this tiny island is said to have reached 20,000 by the 10th century and it was a critically important trading point with Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire. The rise of the Venetian Republic, along with the erosion of Torcello’s natural harbors, meant that by the 15th century the population had dwindled to less than 1,000.</p>
<p>Today, visiting Torcello feels like stepping back into the past: the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta houses impeccably preserved Byzantine mosaics and the idyllic garden restaurant of Locanda Cipriani is as welcoming now as it was when <a href="https://educated-traveller.com/2018/06/08/torcello-island-of-legends-locanda-cipriani-hemingway-and-venice/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ernest Hemingway</a> took up residence there.</p>
<div id="attachment_63372" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63372" class="size-full wp-image-63372" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-tucker-monticelli-C6RC0wJnTnU-unsplash.jpg" alt="Torcello vineyard" width="1680" height="1149" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-tucker-monticelli-C6RC0wJnTnU-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-tucker-monticelli-C6RC0wJnTnU-unsplash-300x205.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-tucker-monticelli-C6RC0wJnTnU-unsplash-1024x700.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-tucker-monticelli-C6RC0wJnTnU-unsplash-768x525.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/venice-tucker-monticelli-C6RC0wJnTnU-unsplash-1536x1051.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63372" class="wp-caption-text">Walking through a vineyard on Torcello. <h2>The Gardens and Vineyards of the Venetian Lagoon</h2>
<p>While the islands that make up Venice might be shaped like a fish, they’re far from the only catch in the lagoon. Traditional cuisine depends largely on the wetlands: the two most important local fish, <em>sardele</em> (pilchards) and <em>sardon</em> (anchovies), come from the shallow waters of the lagoon. Venice’s most famous dish, <em>bigoli in salsa, </em>takes its unmistakable flavor from local anchovies that form an unctuous base for thick ropes of pasta. A visit to the legendary Rialto Market in the early morning is one of the best ways to see the incredible variety of seafood found in the lagoon (as well as soak in the atmosphere of early morning, mostly tourist-free Venice).</p>
<div id="attachment_63384" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63384" class="size-full wp-image-63384" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-venice-sant-erasmo-island.jpg" alt="Sant Eramso island Venice" width="1680" height="1078" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-venice-sant-erasmo-island.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-venice-sant-erasmo-island-300x193.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-venice-sant-erasmo-island-1024x657.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-venice-sant-erasmo-island-768x493.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-venice-sant-erasmo-island-1536x986.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63384" class="wp-caption-text">The natural beauty of the lagoon on Sant&#8217;Erasmo.</p></div>
<p>But it isn’t just local fish that you’ll find overflowing from stalls and tables at the market: vegetables from the island of <strong>Sant’Erasmo</strong>, known as “the vegetable garden of Venice,” are famous for good reason. The unique climate and soil of Sant’Erasmo result in delicious, high-quality products that you’ll find in all of the best restaurants in the area. The island itself is a protected zone with very few residences and industries in order to preserve the “countryside” of the Venetian Lagoon. But if you’re a fan of cycling or nature walks, consider planning a visit. Public transport runs from Venice to Sant’Erasmo all year round, and you’ll get the chance to see a side of the Venetian Lagoon that most people never discover!</p>
<div id="attachment_63382" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63382" class="size-full wp-image-63382" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-Venice-Mazzorbo-vineyard-island.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1084" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-Venice-Mazzorbo-vineyard-island.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-Venice-Mazzorbo-vineyard-island-300x194.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-Venice-Mazzorbo-vineyard-island-1024x661.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-Venice-Mazzorbo-vineyard-island-768x496.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-Venice-Mazzorbo-vineyard-island-1536x991.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63382" class="wp-caption-text">A quiet vineyard moment on Mazzorbo.</p></div>
<p>If you’ve been lucky enough to sample the famous <em>castraure</em>, an ancient artichoke cultivated on Sant’Erasmo, the tiny island of <strong>Mazzorbo</strong> may wind up being the unexpected highlight of your Venetian holiday. With a history that stretches back as far as Torcello but is much less documented, Mazzorbo was abandoned for centuries and in the process, much of the land that had been inhabited was given back to the elements. When people began to return in the 19th century, they dedicated the area to orchards and vineyards – to great result.</p>
<p>The isolation of the ecosystem on the island and the devotion of its residents to preserving local agricultural traditions made the conservation of the rare Dorona grape possible. Today, Mazzorbo is one of the only places in the world where this varietal is found and cultivated. The <a href="https://www.venissa.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Venissa Estate</a> on Mazzorbo is one of the most famous vineyards in the region and is open to the public for visits. Take a tour of the vines and then look for their bottles on the very best tables in Venice, as restaurants take particular pride in showcasing this rare local gem.</p>
<div id="attachment_63385" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63385" class="size-full wp-image-63385" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-Venice-Burano-island-aerial.jpg" alt="Venice Burano island" width="1680" height="1119" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-Venice-Burano-island-aerial.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-Venice-Burano-island-aerial-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-Venice-Burano-island-aerial-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-Venice-Burano-island-aerial-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-Venice-Burano-island-aerial-1536x1023.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/italy-perfect-Venice-Burano-island-aerial-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63385" class="wp-caption-text">A bird&#8217;s-eye view of colorful Burano.</p></div>
<h2>Art and Artisans in Burano and Murano</h2>
<p>Once you’ve had your fill of wine on Mazzorbo, look for the wooden bridge known to locals as the “<em>ponte longo</em>.” This robust structure links Mazzorbo to <strong>Burano, </strong>one of the most unique and picturesque islands in the Venetian Lagoon – or anywhere else, for that matter. You’ve very likely seen photos of the brightly colored rows of houses that line the wide canals that may look at first glance like they would be closer to Amsterdam than Venice. A <em>vaporetto</em> ride over to Burano is a must stop for any <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/the-art-lovers-guide-to-venice.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">art lover visiting Venice</a>, but not just for its appealing colors.</p>
<p>Burano has a unique history all its own that both links and distinguishes it from <em>La Serenissima</em>. Although it too was likely settled from the time of the Romans, it only gained renown in the 16th century when needle lace making became popular with women from the island, a tradition imported from Cyprus. Before long, a school for lace making would make Burano one of the most important educational hubs in the Venetian Republic, and the iconic colors that fishermen would paint their houses to help find them in fog would also help to lead prospective seamstresses, vendors and artists to the tiny island.</p>

<p>Today, Burano attracts a fair share of visitors, for the kaleidoscope of color that emerges from the lagoon has made it irresistible to tourists looking for that perfect holiday moment. But there is much more than photo opportunities awaiting you, and it is well worth a trip from Venice for the day. Burano is still home to many traditional lace makers who eschew modern machines to practice needle lace, and though their wares come at a premium they are timeless keepsakes. The<a href="https://museomerletto.visitmuve.it/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Lace Museum</a> is also one of the most unique places to visit in Venice: located in the famous lace school that operated from 1872 until 1970, it offers visitors the chance to step back in time and revisit the history of this unique art. With a range of food and drink on offer, you can easily spend the day wandering through Burano and soaking up history through vibrant colors.</p>

<p>Of course, anyone in search of color and kaleidoscopes cannot visit the Venetian lagoon without stopping for a while in <strong>Murano. </strong>The seven islands that compose it occupied a crucial role in the burgeoning Venetian Republic. In 1291, all glass production was moved there in order to remove the risk that the fires from glassblowing would set the wooden buildings of Venice alight. In the centuries that followed, Murano became famous for glass beads, mirrors and particularly chandeliers, many of which would be commissioned for palaces around the world. The <a href="https://museovetro.visitmuve.it/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Murano Glass Museum</a> tells the story of this incredible development and describes in detail how different processes were born and developed among the many masters who practiced there.</p>

<p>Glassblowing is alive and well in Murano and many of the studios will allow visitors to sit and watch as glass objects are created in real time. There are more than two hundred workshops in operation and each has their own style and identity. While you may find trinkets from Murano for sale in gift shops around Venice or the mainland, it’s much more rewarding to see the process for yourself. Although Murano receives quite a lot of foot traffic it isn’t difficult to go a little further outside of the main <em>vaporetti</em> stops and explore the islands for yourself. It is still home to almost 3,000 people, many of whom live and work in the glass industry, and it has a completely different feeling than any of the other islands in the lagoon. Delve into the history of this colorful island on a <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/tour/history-of-glass-making-private-tour" target="_blank" rel="noopener">History of Glass Making Private Tour</a> with an expert guide who will take you to visit the Murano Glass Museum and island of Murano.</p>

<p>In the end, you’ll find that there’s never enough time to see all that the Venetian lagoon and its many islands offer, but you’ll come away with an entirely new understanding of a place that is all too often reduced to a quick day trip. And that is worth its weight in glass, lace or gold.</p>

(<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/3B5SZ06YFn8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>There is almost no party more famous than Venice’s Carnival, and visitors flock in the millions every year to participate in the revelry. Indeed, the city hosts more than three million people over the course of ten days, ending on Shrove Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, which is the traditional beginning of the Lenten period. People come from all over the world to take part in parades and parties, with some sporting costumes so elaborate that they could be considered wearable works of art. There is music, dancing and, of course, plenty of incredible food and drink. It is truly a bucket list-level experience.</p>
<p>However, for the uninitiated, Carnival might seem a bit intimidating. You might be asking yourself: how do I get around? How do I know where to go and what to do? What’s it all about anyway? But fear not! With a little bit of background and some advanced planning, you’ll know everything there is to know about the biggest party of the year, and you’ll be able to make the most of your next Venetian holiday.</p>

<h2>The Long (and Short) History of Venice’s Carnival</h2>
<p>While it may seem that Carnival is as old as the city itself, the truth is a bit more complicated. Although there are arguments among Venetian purists and historians about the exact date, most contend that the first Carnival followed the military victory of the Venetian Republic over the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrico di Treven, in 1162. However, the first document that mentions <em>laxatio carnis</em> (the Latin precursor to our modern word) actually dates from 1094 and was signed by the Venetian Doge Vitale Falier. Either way, by the 12th century Venice enjoyed wealth, military might and nearly unfettered access to the rest of the world via the sea. The “Most Serene Republic” was in a golden era, and there was much to celebrate. In this climate, Carnival became a months-long affair that originally started on Boxing Day (December 26) and would last until Shrove Tuesday, which could be three months later.</p>
<p>Carnival became a particularly important part of Venetian life, in large part thanks to one of its most important ingredients: masks. Because of the rigid social class system in Venice at the time, it was nearly impossible for the nobility to walk around unnoticed. Just as it was unthinkable that a member of the lower classes would be allowed in any of the gilded palaces along the canals. During Carnival, however, people could become anything they wanted and move in circles that they would never have dreamed of otherwise. An air of freedom pervaded the city, and it inspired many of the great artistic legends that give Venice its particular charm. Indeed, without Carnival, there would hardly have been the stories of Casanova or the tales from the<em> Commedia dell’Arte. </em></p>
<div id="attachment_63295" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63295" class="size-full wp-image-63295" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/venice-carnival-costumes-celebrations-3.jpg" alt="carnival" width="1680" height="1207" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/venice-carnival-costumes-celebrations-3.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/venice-carnival-costumes-celebrations-3-300x216.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/venice-carnival-costumes-celebrations-3-1024x736.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/venice-carnival-costumes-celebrations-3-768x552.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/venice-carnival-costumes-celebrations-3-1536x1104.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63295" class="wp-caption-text">Traditional carnival in Venice costumes. (<a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carnival_of_Venice_2022_26_02_2022_11.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Effems</a>, <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>)</p></div>
<p>Of course, the anonymity that masks and revelry conferred was a double-edged sword, and the early history of Carnival is rife with examples of festivities gone awry. As early as the 13th century, laws were passed forbidding gambling whilst masked, though the practice continued for centuries. By the 14th century, masked people were prohibited from visiting convents or monasteries, and by 1511 female prostitutes were forced to petition the government to control the preponderance of masked men that were taking all of their business. That the solution in that last case was to allow female prostitutes to appear topless in public gives some insight into just how wild the republic had become.</p>
<p>As the Renaissance engulfed the kingdoms and republics that would become Italy, Carnival reached its apex: celebrations would begin as early as October and could last until April of the following year. Carousing was becoming the norm, so much so that the Catholic Church had to ban festivities on holy days as a way to try to control the city. By that time, however, Venice had become so synonymous with debauchery that it was flooded with international visitors, who were hardly bothered by the conventions of local clergy. But Napoleon Bonaparte’s victory over the Venetian Republic in 1797 made all of the piecemeal efforts to control Carnival a moot point. After he assumed power over the city, Carnival was banned and the use of masks was strictly prohibited. The party was over.</p>
<div id="attachment_63297" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63297" class="size-full wp-image-63297" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/venice-carnival-costumes-celebrations.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/venice-carnival-costumes-celebrations.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/venice-carnival-costumes-celebrations-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/venice-carnival-costumes-celebrations-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/venice-carnival-costumes-celebrations-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/venice-carnival-costumes-celebrations-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/venice-carnival-costumes-celebrations-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63297" class="wp-caption-text">Elaborate historic costumes in Venice. <p>For almost two centuries, Carnival in Venice existed either in popular legend or in very small, private parties that took place behind closed doors. It wasn’t until the late 1960s that community groups in Venice started to push for the festival to return as a way to boost tourism for the city. Carnival officially returned to Venice in 1979 and in so doing, resurrected many of the traditions that have long since disappeared in the rest of the world. This absence is why so many of the costumes and masks date from the time of the Venetian Republic, making Carnival not just a great party but a snapshot in history.</p>

<h2>The Venice Carnival Today (and Tomorrow)</h2>
<p>While Carnival may still carry the image of a debaucherous (and expensive) affair, its become much more inclusive and artistic in the years since its revival. Recent editions have included competitions for masks, fashion shows and art installations, many of which are free to attend. <a href="https://www.carnevale.venezia.it/en/blog/take-your-time-for-the-original-signs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The 2023 Carnival</a>, titled “Take Your Time for the Original Signs” will take place from February 4-21 and is dedicated to the zodiac calendar as well as the four elements of Earth, Wind, Fire and Water.</p>
<p>As in previous years, the Arsenale hosts an enormous show that takes place on the water, and this year marks the return of the masked float parades on the mainland as well as different islands in the Venetian lagoon. There are different activities, parades and events scheduled for every day of the Carnival, all of which are listed in English and Italian on the <a href="https://www.carnevale.venezia.it/eventi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">official website</a>. Many activities are entirely free, but the more exclusive galas and costume balls are also <a href="https://www.vivovenetia.com/venice-carnival-events/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">available to book</a>.</p>

<p>While Venice is proudly opening its arms to tourists and revelers alike to celebrate Carnival, this year will mark the first time that visitors will have to pay an entry fee if they’re planning to only stay for one day. The fee, which will run anywhere from $3-10, is meant to protect the city and preserve the efforts made towards sustainability and responsible travel. Of course, the perfect solution is to settle in for a longer stay in one of our <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/rentals/venice/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Venice vacation rentals</a> and those extra fees won’t apply to you. The measures are all part of a government effort called <a href="https://www.comune.venezia.it/it/enjoyrespectvenezia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">#EnjoyRespectVenezia</a> which was founded in 2017 to raise awareness among visitors of the fragile ecosystem of the city as well as the need to preserve it for residents.</p>

<p>Getting to Venice and traveling around the city during Carnival is actually quite simple, as trains run into the central Santa Lucia station, and from there, gondolas,<em> vaporetti </em>(water buses) or taxis go into just about every nook and cranny you can imagine. The official website for Carnival has an <a href="https://www.carnevale.venezia.it/en/blog/how-to-get-venice/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">entire section</a> dedicated to getting around during Carnival and includes information about the <em>acqua alta, </em>or high tides. But if you’ve decided to take the trip of a lifetime and head to Venice for Carnival, you’ll spend the majority of your day walking through scenes that will transport you to another time. All you need is to book your apartment, get a pair of shoes made for walking and, of course, don’t forget your mask!</p>

<p>While Florence is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance and Rome is an undeniable powerhouse of art and history, Venice&#8217;s artistic and cultural heritage is no less impressive. When you look a little closer, you&#8217;ll see it&#8217;s so much more than picturesque canals, colorful buildings, and hand blown glass. It’s a destination for art lovers that shimmers with a splendor that&#8217;s purely Venetian. To help you explore the artistic side of Venice, we’ve picked the top museums and historic sites in the city and the surrounding islands. You&#8217;ll find the most important museums you won’t want to miss as well as a few smaller spots to explore if you have more time or if you’re planning a return trip to Venice.</p>
<h2>Piazza San Marco – The Heart of Venice</h2>
<p>There are few places in Italy as overwhelmingly beautiful as Piazza San Marco in Venice. It&#8217;s a lot to take in while standing in the middle: the soaring Campanile, the Byzantine-Gothic splendor of the Basilica di San Marco, the ornate loggias of the Doge’s Palace, and the elegant harmony of the buildings lining three sides of the square. As the seat of the Doge, the chief magistrate and leader of the city, the Palazzo Ducale, or Doge’s Palace, is as illustrious as one would expect for one of Italy’s earliest and most powerful maritime republics. From sumptuous rooms to the stark prisons and the famous Bridge of Sighs, visit the <a href="https://palazzoducale.visitmuve.it/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Palazzo Ducale museum</a> to explore the splendor of La Serenissima through its history, culture and art.</p>
<div id="attachment_62691" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62691" class="size-full wp-image-62691" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-basilica-san-marco-marika-sartori-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1127" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-basilica-san-marco-marika-sartori-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-basilica-san-marco-marika-sartori-unsplash-300x201.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-basilica-san-marco-marika-sartori-unsplash-1024x687.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-basilica-san-marco-marika-sartori-unsplash-768x515.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-basilica-san-marco-marika-sartori-unsplash-1536x1030.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62691" class="wp-caption-text">Splendid details on the Basilica di San Marco (<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/v3OP5qjOJF8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>Art lovers won’t want to miss the <a href="http://www.basilicasanmarco.it/?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Basilica di San Marco</a> with its 8,000 square meters of glimmering gold mosaics. The five domes of the cathedral are covered in mosaics that were created from the 12th to the 13th centuries. While the mosaics are reason enough to visit, the cathedral is full of religious treasures, like the exquisite Pala d’Oro altar, and sculptures. You’ll have to visit inside to see the originals of the Triumphal Quadriga, the set of four ancient bronze horses that were looted from Constantinople after the Fourth Crusade. The horses you’ll spot on the facade of the cathedral are replicas.</p>
<div id="attachment_62687" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62687" class="size-full wp-image-62687" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-clock-tower-museum-jeremy-bezanger-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-clock-tower-museum-jeremy-bezanger-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-clock-tower-museum-jeremy-bezanger-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-clock-tower-museum-jeremy-bezanger-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-clock-tower-museum-jeremy-bezanger-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-clock-tower-museum-jeremy-bezanger-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-clock-tower-museum-jeremy-bezanger-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62687" class="wp-caption-text">A closer look at the astronomical clock in St. Mark&#8217;s Square</p></div>
<p>Just to the left of the Basilica, the striking <a href="https://torreorologio.visitmuve.it/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Clock Tower</a> deserves a closer look. The 15th-century tower stands over the arched entrance to the Merceria, the historic trading center of Venice, and features an astronomical clock, ornate decorations and a statue of St. Mark’s lion. At the very top you&#8217;ll see two bronze figures that strike a bell, one is young and one is old to represent the passage of time. You can visit the clock tower and climb a narrow and steep staircase past the fascinating clock mechanism to the Two Moors terrace on the top for a great view overlooking the busy piazza below.</p>
<div id="attachment_62698" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62698" class="size-full wp-image-62698" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/correr-art-museum-venice-1.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1230" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/correr-art-museum-venice-1.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/correr-art-museum-venice-1-300x220.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/correr-art-museum-venice-1-1024x750.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/correr-art-museum-venice-1-768x562.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/correr-art-museum-venice-1-1536x1125.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62698" class="wp-caption-text">Opulence at the Museo Correr (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/kotomi-jewelry/28263217268/in/album-72157669015094008/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>One would think such richness would be enough for one piazza, but there’s still more here that art and history lovers won’t want to miss. The <a href="https://correr.visitmuve.it/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Museo Correr</a> (Correr Museum), the Museo Archaeologico (Archaeological Museum), and the Biblioteca Marciana (Marciana Library) are part of the Museums of Piazza San Marco. Start at the Museo Correr on the western side of Piazza San Marco. Set in a massive 17th-century palace, the museum has over 70 rooms to explore. Get a closer look at Venetian Gothic art, stroll through the Imperial Apartments, see some fine sculptures by Antonio Canova and learn more about Venice’s history.</p>
<p>Don’t miss the chance to see the monumental reading room at the <a href="https://bibliotecanazionalemarciana.cultura.gov.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Biblioteca Marciana</a>, which you can enter through the Museo Correr. The spectacular reading room is adorned with works by three of Venice&#8217;s most important Renaissance artists: Tiziano (Titian), Tintoretto and Veronese.</p>
<div id="attachment_62694" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62694" class="size-full wp-image-62694" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Museo-Archeologico-di-Venezia.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1135" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Museo-Archeologico-di-Venezia.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Museo-Archeologico-di-Venezia-300x203.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Museo-Archeologico-di-Venezia-1024x692.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Museo-Archeologico-di-Venezia-768x519.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Museo-Archeologico-di-Venezia-1536x1038.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62694" class="wp-caption-text">Inside the Museo Archaeologico in Piazza San Marco (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/kotomi-jewelry/41331034985/in/album-72157669015094008/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>History enthusiasts will also want to plan a visit to the <a href="https://artsupp.com/it/venezia/musei/museo-archeologico-nazionale-di-venezia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Museo Archeologico di Venezia</a>, included in a group ticket for the Museums of Piazza San Marco, to see the bronze and marble statues and collections from antiquity.</p>
<p>Ready for a break? Take the elevator to the top of the Campanile and look out over Piazza San Marco and the city of Venice with new eyes!</p>
<div id="attachment_62702" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62702" class="size-full wp-image-62702" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-grande-canal-hasmik-ghazaryan-olson-unsplash.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-grande-canal-hasmik-ghazaryan-olson-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-grande-canal-hasmik-ghazaryan-olson-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-grande-canal-hasmik-ghazaryan-olson-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-grande-canal-hasmik-ghazaryan-olson-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-grande-canal-hasmik-ghazaryan-olson-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-grande-canal-hasmik-ghazaryan-olson-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62702" class="wp-caption-text">Venice&#8217;s Grand Canal (<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/Ea1MhQuUk5U" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<h2>Art Along the Grand Canal</h2>
<p>Simply riding on a vaporetto and taking in the grandeur of the historic buildings along the Grand Canal is an experience you won’t want to miss. Here are a few artistic spots you’ll want to stop at along the way. Start at the <a href="https://www.gallerieaccademia.it/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gallerie dell&#8217;Accademia</a> located in the Dorsoduro neighborhood across the Grand Canal via the picturesque Ponte dell&#8217;Accademia. With a rich collection that spans the 13th to the 18th centuries, it is the artistic heart of Venice. This is the place to really delve into the Venetian masters like Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese and Tiepolo. The setting is equally evocative in the deconsecrated Santa Maria della Carità church and monastery.</p>
<div id="attachment_62711" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62711" class="size-full wp-image-62711" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/peggy-guggenheim-collection-venice-matteodefina.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1513" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/peggy-guggenheim-collection-venice-matteodefina.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/peggy-guggenheim-collection-venice-matteodefina-300x270.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/peggy-guggenheim-collection-venice-matteodefina-1024x922.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/peggy-guggenheim-collection-venice-matteodefina-768x692.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/peggy-guggenheim-collection-venice-matteodefina-1536x1383.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62711" class="wp-caption-text">(© Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Photo Matteo De Fina)</p></div>
<p>Just a five-minute stroll away, the <a href="https://www.guggenheim-venice.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Peggy Guggenheim Collection</a> is home to an unexpected treasure trove of 20th-century art. This palazzo along the Grand Canal was Peggy Guggenheim’s home until her death in 1979. While not a large museum, each room is full of masterpieces. The collection is truly superb, including works by Picasso, Dali, Duchamp, Pollock, Chagall and so many more. Enjoy the pretty courtyard garden and don’t miss the views from the terrace on the Grand Canal.</p>
<div id="attachment_62685" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62685" class="size-full wp-image-62685" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-Santa-Maria-della-Salute.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1049" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-Santa-Maria-della-Salute.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-Santa-Maria-della-Salute-300x187.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-Santa-Maria-della-Salute-1024x639.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-Santa-Maria-della-Salute-768x480.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-Santa-Maria-della-Salute-1536x959.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62685" class="wp-caption-text">The Santa Maria della Salute church and Punta della Dogana</p></div>
<p>Meander through the narrow streets and over little bridges of Dorsoduro to the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, where you’ll want to stop in to see the Baroque interior and paintings by Titian and Tintoretto. Just beyond is <a href="https://www.palazzograssi.it/en/about/sites/punta-della-dogana/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Punta della Dogana</a>, the former customs house, which is located at the very tip of Dorsoduro. The 17th-century structure was transformed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando into a world-class exhibition space run by the Pinault Collection, which manages the massive art collection of French businessman François Pinault.</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" title="YouTube video player" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PqJSNDXwNQA" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p>While Punta Della Dogana hosts exhibitions, more of the Pinault Collection is on display at the <a href="https://www.palazzograssi.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Palazzo Grassi</a>, a remarkable 18th-century palazzo located along the Grand Canal. <p>Just across the Grand Canal sits <a href="https://carezzonico.visitmuve.it/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ca&#8217;Rezzonico</a>, a beautiful 18th-century palazzo that was once a noble Venetian home. The building has a surprising history, from the height of Venetian splendor to family troubles and sales—even becoming the residence of English poet Robert Browning—until eventually becoming a museum dedicated to 18th century Venice. With fine paintings and lush décor, the brilliance of Venice’s most extravagant era comes to life while walking through the grand ballroom and richly decorated rooms of the museum.</p>

<p>While in the neighborhood, be sure to stroll over to the pretty Campo San Barnaba. There you’ll find the Chiesa di San Barnaba that is home to the small but interesting <a href="https://www.leonardoavenezia.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leonardo da Vinci Exhibition</a> with handmade (and interactive!) recreations of Leonardo’s remarkably varied mechanical designs.</p>

<p>Along the Grand Canal past the Rialto Bridge is one more artistic spot you won’t want to miss. Located in the Santa Croce neighborhood, the <a href="https://capesaro.visitmuve.it/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ca&#8217; Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art</a> is set in a beautiful 17th-century palazzo. A striking blend of old and new, the museum has works by artists such as Klimt, Matisse, Chagall, Kandinsky and Italian artists like Morandi, De Chirico, Severini. On the third floor of the museum you’ll find <a href="https://orientalevenezia.beniculturali.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Museum of Oriental Art</a>, with the largest collection of Japanese Edo period art in Europe. The entrance ticket allows access to both museums.</p>

<h2>Murano and Burano: Art on the Islands</h2>
<p>Spending time visiting the colorful islands of Murano and Burano is a must during your stay in Venice. While famous for the tradition of glass blowing on Murano and lace making on Burano, the history is so much richer than meets the eyes. Take some time to delve deeper at the <a href="https://museovetro.visitmuve.it/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Museo del Vetro</a>, Murano’s Glass Museum, which is housed in a historic palazzo near the Basilica of Santa Maria and San Donato – one of the oldest churches in the Venetian Lagoon with a remarkable Byzantine mosaic floor from the 12th century.</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" title="YouTube video player" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-siCH0tTL1I" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p>Follow the history of glass making chronologically through the massive collection that spans from early Roman pieces dating from the 1st to the 3rd century AD up to exquisite pieces from the Renaissance of glass making to modern techniques and contemporary designs. The Central Room with its ornate chandeliers and 18th-century frescoed ceiling truly captures the golden age of Murano glass.</p>
<div id="attachment_62674" style="width: 1610px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62674" class="size-full wp-image-62674" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-museo-del-merletto.jpg" alt="Art" width="1600" height="1038" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-museo-del-merletto.jpg 1600w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-museo-del-merletto-300x195.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-museo-del-merletto-1024x664.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-museo-del-merletto-768x498.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/venice-museo-del-merletto-1536x996.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62674" class="wp-caption-text">Lacework at the Museo del Merletto on Burano (<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/spindexr/7419167298" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>Over on Burano where shops sell handmade lace, spend some time learning about the human side of this beautiful craft at the <a href="https://museomerletto.visitmuve.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Museo del Merletto</a> (Lace Museum). Located in the historic building that was once home to the Burano Lace School from 1872 to 1970, the museum&#8217;s collection traces the history of Venetian lace with delicate and precious examples from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The artistry in these finely detailed pieces is breathtaking. As you watch lace makers at work in the museum and learn how the painstaking craft is often passed down for generations, you’ll understand how important it is that traditions like lace making aren&#8217;t lost to time.</p>

<p>For a rare Venetian experience, Palazzo Tiziano offers the chance to stay in an entirely private 16th-century palazzo in Venice’s coveted San Marco neighborhood. This elegant four-story palazzo exudes history while also boasting every modern convenience for a comfortable stay. The perfect finishing touch is the <em>altana</em>, a traditional Venetian terrace, where you can gaze out to panoramic views of Venice. Just beyond the 12th-century bell tower of the San Samuele church you’ll even spot the Grand Canal nearby.</p>
<div id="attachment_62640" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/palazzo-tiziano" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62640" class="wp-image-62640 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/italy-perfect-palazzo-tiziano-terrace.jpg" alt="Palazzo Tiziano" width="1680" height="1676" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/italy-perfect-palazzo-tiziano-terrace.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/italy-perfect-palazzo-tiziano-terrace-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/italy-perfect-palazzo-tiziano-terrace-1024x1022.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/italy-perfect-palazzo-tiziano-terrace-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/italy-perfect-palazzo-tiziano-terrace-768x766.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/italy-perfect-palazzo-tiziano-terrace-1536x1532.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-62640" class="wp-caption-text">A rare private terrace &#8211; with a glimpse of the Grand Canal nearby!</p></div>
<p>The name for this historic palazzo was inspired by Titian, or Tiziano in Italian, since the famous Venetian Renaissance artist lived nearby in the illustrious San Marco neighborhood. This area was home to famous Venetian residents like Casanova along with important writers and artists, such as Veronese and Titian. Lord Byron even lived in a palazzo nearby from 1816 to 1819. Now you can settle into a comfortable stay in Venice in a setting that has been home to generations of Venetian noblemen.</p>

<p>The neighborhood around Palazzo Tiziano is everything we love about Venice, full of character and charm, excellent local shops, and a local vibe while also being close to top sites. You&#8217;ll be just a stone’s throw from the Grand Canal and the <a href="https://www.palazzograssi.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Palazzo Grassi</a> – one of the most elegant buildings in Venice. The location couldn’t be better: just a minute away is a pretty square that opens out to the Grand Canal with a vaporetto stop that makes it easy to head out exploring on the water.</p>

<p>One of the most unforgettable experiences in Venice is simply exploring the city on foot. Up and down little bridges, walking along canals, catching sight of a gondola quietly slipping by, happening across a hidden away piazza. There’s no place on earth where wandering (or even getting lost!) is as pleasurable as Venice. Cross the Ponte dell&#8217;Accademia to visit the Gallerie dell&#8217;Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in one direction or set off in another and meander your way to the Rialto Bridge or to Piazza San Marco. You&#8217;ll enjoy the best of Venice &#8211; the quiet neighborhoods and the splendor of the city&#8217;s iconic sights.</p>
