<p>We love discovering what sparks the imagination when travelers begin planning a trip to Italy. Recently, our guests have been especially interested in one of Florence’s most charming gastronomic curiosities – the <em>buchette del vino</em>, or wine windows. These small, arched openings set into Renaissance palaces may look unassuming at first glance, but they hold centuries of history within their stone frames. Let’s take a closer look at their story plus the perfect way to experience them for yourself!</p>
<p><a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/tour/florence-wine-windows-walk" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-64499 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-1.jpg" alt="wine florence" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-1.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-1-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></a></p>
<h3>A Renaissance Wine Tradition</h3>
<p>Florence’s wine windows date back tothe 16th century, when Cosimo I de’ Medici granted noble families the right to sell wine directly from their homes. Many of these families owned vineyards in the Tuscan countryside as well as grand residences in the city. The solution was both practical and discreet: a small hatch in the palazzo wall where locals could bring a flask, pass it through, and have it filled with wine – all without ever entering the household.</p>
<p>These windows would become much more than just a convenience. During the plague years of the 1600s, they allowed for exchanges that kept social distance long before the concept had a name. In the centuries that followed, many were sealed or forgotten as Florence modernized, yet the wine windows endured as little reminders of the city’s resilience and ingenuity.</p>
<h3>Rediscovery &amp; Revival</h3>
<p>For centuries, Florence’s wine windows were overlooked, many bricked over or repurposed as mail slots and doorbells. Their story began to reemerge thanks to the work of local historians and the <a href="https://buchettedelvino.org/home%2520eng/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Buchette del Vino Association</a>, which has catalogued more than 180 surviving examples in Florence alone. They’ve also inspired renewed attention in recent years thanks to photographer Robbin Gheesling’s evocative <em>Wine Doors of Florence</em> project and the richly illustrated book <a href="https://www.amazon.com/WINDOWS-Florence-Tuscany-Diletta-Corsini/dp/8894196321/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1BVBSFCS66G8W&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.FZT8CYbYRTBecIRaTR-tyFbBvI8rhX8KdzgUD8OT4zg.OXjkJ3M-wT5lv0Xl3cPeY9Q7aLg7WFTrCDUWXzCH8Og&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=florence+wine+windows&amp;qid=1756799774&amp;rnid=2941120011&amp;s=books&amp;sprefix=florence+wine+window%2Caps%2C208&amp;sr=1-1&amp;tag=perfectexperi-20" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Wine Windows in Florence and Tuscany</em></a> by Diletta Corsini and Lucrezia Giordano.</p>
<p>Even Stanley Tucci brought them into the spotlight in his series <em>Searching for Italy</em>, where he marveled at the charm of sipping a glass of wine received through one of these centuries-old doors. All of this attention has made the <em>buchette del vino</em> one of Florence’s most charming gastronomic features.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/tour/florence-wine-windows-walk" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-64498 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-2.jpg" alt="wine windows tour" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-2.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Florence-Italy-Wine-Windows-Walk-2-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></a></p>
<h3>Experience the Wine Windows Yourself</h3>
<p>With something as unique as Florence’s wine windows, you simply have to see them in action. Join a <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/tour/florence-wine-windows-walk" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Florence Wine Windows Guided Walk</strong></a> led by a local expert to discover the historic <em>buchette del vino</em> for yourself. Along the way you’ll also pass landmarks such as the Duomo, Palazzo Medici Riccardi, Piazza della Repubblica and Palazzo Strozzi, while hearing the fascinating details behind these tiny windows</p>
<p>At one stop, you’ll even sip a glass of wine served through a window – just as Florentines did centuries ago. The walk then continues inside Mercato Centrale, where a Tuscan wine specialist will host a tasting of three regional wines paired with classic bites like prosciutto, salami and olives. With its small-group format, this tour is a great mix of history, culture and gastronomy that will leave you with a new appreciation for Florence’s most curious tradition.</p>

<p>Some of the most meaningful artistic moments in Florence, for us, are tied to Fra Angelico. There&#8217;s nothing quite like standing before his luminous paintings in the Uffizi or being surrounded by the frescoes he painted for the monks of San Marco where his frescoes still radiate a sense of peace nearly six centuries later. If you’re not familiar with this Renaissance master, this fall and winter is the perfect time to discover him as Florence celebrates with the first major exhibition of his work in more than 70 years. Plan your trip now to experience this extraordinary cultural event in the city he called home!</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Beato Angelico" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/O5pjhT8_nRg?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<h2>Fra Angelico at Palazzo Strozzi &amp; Museo di San Marco</h2>
<p>Opening September 26, 2025, and running through January 25, 2026, the <a href="https://www.palazzostrozzi.org/en/archivio/exhibitions/angelico/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Fra Angelico</strong></a> exhibition will take place at two of Florence’s most remarkable cultural venues: the elegant <a href="https://www.palazzostrozzi.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi</a> and the <a href="https://museitoscana.cultura.gov.it/luoghi_della_cultura/museo_di_san_marco/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Museo di San Marco</a>. More than four years in the making, the exhibition reunites altarpieces that have been separated for centuries, presents masterpieces freshly restored through an ambitious conservation campaign, and showcases works drawn from some of the world’s most prestigious museums and collections. To see them gathered together in Florence—the city where Fra Angelico lived, prayed and painted—is a rare and unforgettable opportunity.</p>
<p>Alongside his works, you&#8217;ll have the chance to experience the rich artistic world of Renaissance Florence, by seeing Fra Angelico in dialogue with other masters like Masaccio, Filippo Lippi, Ghiberti and Luca della Robbia. It’s a chance not only to encounter the beauty of his art, but also to understand how profoundly he shaped the course of painting in Florence and beyond.</p>
<h2>Why You’ll Want to Be Here This Fall &amp; Winter</h2>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-64473" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/italy-perfect-florence-autumn-iStock-911487982.jpg" alt="Florence autumn" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/italy-perfect-florence-autumn-iStock-911487982.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/italy-perfect-florence-autumn-iStock-911487982-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/italy-perfect-florence-autumn-iStock-911487982-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/italy-perfect-florence-autumn-iStock-911487982-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/italy-perfect-florence-autumn-iStock-911487982-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/italy-perfect-florence-autumn-iStock-911487982-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></p>
<p>What makes this exhibition even more special is its timing, stretching from the beauty of autumn in Florence right through the holiday season. These are our favorite times of year, when the pace slows and there’s space to savor it all. You can spend a quiet morning immersed in Fra Angelico’s art, then enjoy the simple pleasure of a warming bowl of ribollita or an evening stroll beneath festive holiday lights. If you&#8217;re looking for a reason to plan that next trip to Italy, this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition is a great reason!</p>

<p>If you&#8217;d like to delve deeper, Florence-based art historian Alexandra Lawrence is offering a six-week lecture series, <a href="https://www.eventbrite.it/e/heaven-bound-the-life-and-art-of-fra-angelico-tickets-1411496838039" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Heaven Bound: The Life and Art of Fra Angelico</strong></a> starting September 4, 2025. Whether preparing for your visit or joining from afar, her lectures are a wonderful way to understand the artist who became known as the “Angelic Friar.” Pope John Paul II once described Fra Angelico as the painter who best “translated into color the eloquence of the word of God,” and Alexandra’s insights illuminate exactly why his work continues to move us today.</p>

<p>Florence is a city that knows style – always has, always will. While the big designer names along Via de’ Tornabuoni and the goldsmiths glittering on the Ponte Vecchio are excellent shopping spots, what keeps us coming back are the smaller discoveries. Hidden along quiet streets, behind unassuming doors or nestled in centuries-old courtyards are the shops that hold the true heart of Florence. These are the places where tradition lives on in the hands of artisans—many younger—and where fashion feels personal. <h2>Shoes &amp; Leathercraft</h2>
<p>Florence has a long tradition of leatherwork, and its shoemaking heritage is equally impressive. The city is home to bespoke workshops and celebrated designers who continue to craft shoes by hand, using skills passed down for generations. A great way to appreciate Florence’s fashion legacy is by visiting the <a href="https://museo.ferragamo.com/it" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Museo Ferragamo</a>, dedicated to one of Italy’s most famous shoe designers. Afterward, head to these artisan workshops for a closer look at Florence’s shoemaking today.</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://www.cbmadeinitaly.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>CB Made in Italy</strong></a> (Via Santo Spirito, 62r)<br data-start="976" data-end="979" />Founded by the brother-and-sister team of Costanza and Claudio Barindelli, CB combines traditional craftsmanship with sleek contemporary style. Each pair is handmade in Italy with a focus on quality and timeless design.</li>
<li><a href="https://stefanobemer.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Stefano Bemer</strong></a> (Borgo San Frediano, 143r)<br data-start="1248" data-end="1251" />Stefano Bemer’s name is legendary in bespoke shoemaking. The workshop continues to produce custom shoes of exceptional quality, each pair crafted with precision and artistry in the heart of the <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/our-guide-to-florences-oltrarno-neighborhood.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oltrarno</a>.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.manninafirenze.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Mannina</strong></a> (Via de’ Guicciardini, 16r)<br data-start="1499" data-end="1502" />Founded in 1953 by Calogero Mannina, this family-run shop specializes in handmade shoes and leather goods. Every pair reflects the meticulous craftsmanship that defines Florence’s leather tradition.</li>
</ul>
<h2><strong>Gifts &amp; Artisan Crafts</strong></h2>
<p>Florence’s creative spirit shines in its artisan workshops and boutiques. These are the places to find something you won’t see anywhere else.</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://www.florencefactory.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Florence Factory</strong></a> (Via dei Neri, 6-8r)<br />
A beautifully curated boutique showcasing contemporary Tuscan artisans and designers. From handcrafted leather and jewelry to ceramics and artwork, each piece is carefully selected for its quality and creativity. It’s the perfect place to find unique, meaningful gifts that capture Florence’s artisan spirit.</li>
<li><strong><a href="https://www.instagram.com/femaleartsinflorence/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Female Arts Florence</a> (FAF)</strong> (new location coming soon)<br />
We loved this colorful spot on Borgo S. Frediano, which celebrated female artists with a gallery space and shop. While they’re between locations right now, keep an eye on their <a href="https://www.instagram.com/femaleartsinflorence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Instagram</a> for updates as they’ll be reopening soon in the historic center. Wherever they land, expect the same vibrant mix of art, creativity and color that made the first space such a favorite.</li>
<li><a href="https://www.giuliamateria.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Giulia Materia</strong></a> (Sdrucciolo de&#8217; Pitti, 13r)<br />
Located near the Palazzo Pitti, modern design meets Tuscan tradition in Giulia Materia’s creative shop. Her clothing and accessories are sustainable, stylish and distinctly Florentine.</li>
<li><a href="https://scuoladelcuoio.it/it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Scuola del Cuoio</strong></a> (Via di S. Giuseppe, 5/R)<br />
Behind Santa Croce, this historic leather school has been producing handcrafted pieces for decades. Watching the artisans at work is part of the experience.</li>
<li><a href="https://ilpapirofirenze.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Il Papiro</strong></a> (Multiple locations)<br />
Known for exquisite marbled paper, Il Papiro is a Florence icon. We love the tiny two-level shop just behind the Duomo (Piazza del Duomo, 24/r), but the larger Oltrarno location just across the Ponte Vecchio (Via de&#8217; Guicciardini, 47r) is also charming.</li>
<li><a href="https://www.giuliogiannini.com/it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Giulio Giannini e Figlio</strong></a> (Via dei Velluti, 1)<br />
A Florence institution since 1856, this family-run workshop is now in its sixth generation, led by Maria Giannini. Known for exquisite hand-marbled paper and fine leather-bound books, each piece is created using centuries-old techniques. You can also book demonstrations or workshops to try this timeless craft yourself!</li>
<li><a href="https://www.laviadelte.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>La Via del Tè</strong></a> (Via della Condotta, 28/r)<br />
Founded in Florence in 1961, La Via del Tè brings the art of fine tea to life with blends inspired by the city’s landmarks, like the Santa Maria del Fiore black tea. With elegant boutiques around the city, it’s a beautiful spot to choose gifts or bring home a delicious reminder of Florence.</li>

<h2><strong>Bookshops</strong></h2>
<p>Florence has a surprisingly rich tradition of bookshops, particularly for English-language readers. Since the days of the Grand Tour, the city has drawn scholars, writers and travelers from abroad, and its vibrant expat community has kept the tradition alive. These bookshops are more than places to buy books, they’re cultural touchstones and gathering spots for locals and visitors alike.</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.papex.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Paperback Exchange</strong></a> (Via dell&#8217;Oche, 4/r)<br />
A beloved institution since 1979, Paperback Exchange is the go-to for English-language books in Florence. The shelves are lined with both new releases and secondhand treasures, making it the perfect place to pick up something for your holiday reading – or a gift to bring home.</li>
<li><a href="https://www.libreriabrac.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Libreria Brac</strong></a> (Via dei Vagellai, 18/r)<br />
This bookshop feels like a little secret, tucked away on a quiet street. Inside, it’s a warm and creative mix of books, a vegetarian café-bistrot, cultural events and concerts.</li>
<li><a href="https://www.giuntiodeon.com/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Giunti Odeon</strong></a> (Piazza degli Strozzi)<br />
Stepping into Giunti Odeon is an experience in itself. Set inside a 1920s cinema, this bookshop is grand yet inviting. Alongside the books, there’s often a cultural calendar of talks, film screenings and events that make it a lively part of Florence’s literary life.</li>

<h2><strong>Perfumes &amp; Home Scents</strong></h2>
<p>Florence has a long history of fragrance, with perfumers who have perfected their craft over centuries. These are two of the city’s most unforgettable scent experiences.</p>

A visit feels like stepping back in time and you’ll leave with a scent that forever recalls Florence.</li>

<p>There’s a certain magic to summer in Italy, and it’s the kind that stays with you long after your trip ends. It might be the golden evening light over a Tuscan hilltop or the simple joy of a spritz in a sunny piazza. Maybe it’s the music that fills the air on a warm Roman night or the type of relaxation that only comes with picture-perfect Amalfi Coast views. If you&#8217;ve been dreaming of an Italian getaway, we’re sharing some of the things we love most about summer in Italy. There&#8217;s still time to plan your own 2025 adventure!</p>
<p><a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/plan-your-trip/events-italy/when-to-visit-florence.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-64412 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/italy-perfect-events-florence-summer.jpg" alt="Florence summer events" width="1680" height="1064" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/italy-perfect-events-florence-summer.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/italy-perfect-events-florence-summer-300x190.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/italy-perfect-events-florence-summer-1024x649.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/italy-perfect-events-florence-summer-768x486.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/italy-perfect-events-florence-summer-1536x973.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /></a></p>
<h3><strong>See Florence Full of Color</strong></h3>
<p>Florence really comes alive in the summer, and not just because of the sunshine over the the terracotta rooftops. In June there&#8217;s an exciting build up for one of the most unusual sport traditions you’ll ever witness: <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/calcio-storico-florences-exhilarating-local-game.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Calcio Storico Fiorentino</a>. Imagine a historic mash-up of soccer, rugby and raw Renaissance spirit, all played out in the heart of the city in <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/florence-piazza-santa-croce.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Piazza Santa Croce</a>. It’s exhilarating, chaotic and purely Florentine!</p>
<p>Then there’s <a href="https://www.estatefiesolana.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Estate Fiesolana</a>, running from June 6 to September 11, 2025, an outdoor cultural festival set in the ancient Roman amphitheater of Fiesole, just a short drive or bus ride from the city center. Picture yourself under the stars listening to live music, watching a play or soaking in a ballet performance, all with the hills of Tuscany as your backdrop. It’s the kind of summer night you never forget!</p>
<p>And, of course, no mention of summer near Florence is complete without the Palio di Siena. This isn’t just a horse race, it’s a centuries-old spectacle of medieval costumes and passion. Held on July 2 and again on August 16 in Siena’s breathtaking Piazza del Campo, it’s easy to reach as a <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/siena-daytrip-florence.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">day trip from Florence</a>.</p>

<h3><strong>A Roman Summer Holiday</strong></h3>
<p>If Florence is all about tradition and romance, Rome turns the dial to “celebration.” The summer kicks off with Festa della Repubblica on June 2, Italy’s National Day. The military parade down Via dei Fori Imperiali is as grand as the Colosseum itself, and the aerial display by the Frecce Tricolori—Italy’s acrobatic flight team—is a thrill every time.</p>
<p>Then all summer long, the <a href="https://www.auditorium.com/it/festival/roma-summer-fest-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Roma Summer Fest</a> takes over the elegant Auditorium Parco della Musica. The lineup always includes an exciting mix of international stars and Italian icons, but what makes it truly special is the chance to hear incredible music under the Roman sky.</p>
<p>And don’t miss Lungo il Tevere in July, when the banks of the Tiber transform into a buzzing riverside scene. Think pop-up bars, art stalls, live music, late-night strolls and delicious foods. It&#8217;s Rome’s answer to the ultimate summer evening!</p>
<p>And let’s not forget: this is a <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/the-jubilee-in-rome-tips-for-visiting-in-2025.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jubilee Year</a> and the arrival of Pope Leo XIV, so there’s an extra dose of energy and special events experiences all over the city.</p>

<h3><strong>A Peaceful Escape on the Amalfi Coast</strong></h3>
<p>Need a quieter pace? There’s still time to plan a summer getaway on the Amalfi Coast. We&#8217;ve hand-picked the most beautiful villas in the quieter corners of Italy&#8217;s most-popular coastline, where you can soak up the beauty without the crowds.</p>
<p>One of our favorite spots? <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/vista-flora" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vista Flora</a> and <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/vista-serena" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vista Serena</a> offer picture-perfect views and lush gardens that are made for lazy summer afternoons. Or plan a stay at <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/lantana-villa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lantana Villa</a> with incredible views of the Gulf of Naples. It’s the kind of place where your biggest decision is whether to sip your Aperol spritz by the pool or watch the sun dip into the sea from the outdoor lounge.</p>

<p>Few places capture the imagination quite like Florence, a city steeped in history, art and historic charm. For <strong>Georgette Jupe</strong>, the woman behind <a href="https://girlinflorence.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Girl in Florence</strong></a>, what began as a study-abroad adventure turned into a lifelong love affair with Tuscany’s capital. Now she has sat down with us to share about her journey from Texas to Tuscany, what makes Florence such a special place to call home and—as a special feature—her favorite hidden gems for travelers looking to experience the city like a local.</p>
<h3>We&#8217;ve enjoyed following you as Girl In Florence on Instagram for many years. What first brought you to Florence? When did you know you wanted to stay?</h3>
<p>I first came to Florence when I was almost 21, originally as a study abroad student on a plane with 30 other people who had mapped out what they thought Italy would be like. At the time, I had my heart set on living in London, but I ended up in Italy by chance, a happy accident. I thought my time here would be short and sweet – an exciting detour before returning home. Little did I know, I would end up calling Florence home for over 15 years with a three year stint in Switzerland. In a way, coming here without any expectations is what allowed me to fall in love with the country in the first place.</p>
<p>So many aspects of life in Italy were different from what I knew growing up in the suburbs of San Antonio, Texas – the walking culture, the architecture, the access to other European cities and, of course, the simple, delicious local cuisine that had me breaking out from my student diet of sandwiches and salads. I had also just returned from a two-month stint teaching English in China, and 2005 turned out to be an incredibly pivotal year for me. It felt like the world was opening up, and with it, the possibilities of what my life could be.</p>
<p>Though I was born and raised in Texas, I always felt like my true home was somewhere else, though I wasn&#8217;t sure where. Italy, with its unique mix of chaos and comfort, both challenged and captivated me. After finishing my degree in Los Angeles, I decided to return to Florence, but it wasn&#8217;t an easy decision. Life as a student here was one thing; living and working as an adult in a foreign country was a whole different reality.</p>
<p>I had to find odd jobs that paid very little, navigate the complicated process of securing a work visa, and, most importantly, learn Italian. There were plenty of moments when I thought about packing it all in and heading back to the USA. But in the end, I&#8217;m grateful I stayed. All of the challenges I faced—difficult as they were—helped me grow into a more resilient person, someone who now tackles challenges head-on without hesitation.</p>

<h3>What are the aspects of Florence life that you enjoy most? What makes the local community so special?</h3>
<p>Over the years, my life in Florence has taken many different shapes, from when I first arrived at 21 to now, at 40. But one constant that has never changed is my love for the size of the city. Florence is small enough to explore on foot or by bike without getting too annoyed by the frequent transport strikes, and I’ve always felt that just walking through the center is an experience in itself. There&#8217;s always something happening – festivals, exhibitions, new restaurants and bars and though it can be very busy at times there are always hidden detours through crowds. It never gets boring.</p>
<p>Because the city is so compact, you constantly run into people you know, which makes me feel more connected to the community and up-to-date as to what people are up to. After 15 years, I’ve built up a real sense of familiarity here. Whether it’s at a local market or just walking down the street, I always bump into friendly faces, and that sense of belonging adds so much to my experience of the city.</p>
<h3>For travelers staying longer in Florence, or returning for a deeper visit, what are the experiences they should seek out?</h3>
<p>For a richer experience in Florence beyond the typical tourist attractions, consider exploring things and engaging in activities based on hobbies or curiosities you already have instead of visiting something just because you think you should or for a photo op. Into art but craving something a little less crowded? Begin with a visit to the Stibbert Museum, a lesser-known treasure showcasing an extensive collection of armor and art before stopping by the Horne Museum close to the Arno river. The Horne Museum, another secret Florentine gem. Herbert Percy Horne was a late-Victorian Englishman who came to Florence to study the Renaissance and filled his house with the sort of art that would have been seen in a home of the period. Here you’ll find work by key artists such as Giotto, Filippo Lippi and Giambologna, as well as furniture and domestic objects from the period.</p>
<p>Consider making a Google map of small shops, authentic boutiques and artisans and make that an entire afternoon activity after lunch. For an authentic culinary experience, make it a point to visit local markets such as Sant’Ambrogio or the weekend farmer’s market in Cascine Park. Avoid the crowded eateries near major sights and instead visit a family-run trattoria a little further out fro the center. So much of the beauty of Florence is just enjoying it on a slower, daily basis without feeling like you need to rush everything, even after 15 years I continue to be inspired.</p>

<h3>Do you have any favorite spots that really capture Florence?</h3>
<p>Happy to share some of my personal favorites!</p>
<p><strong>Museums:</strong></p>
<p><strong>Stibbert Museum</strong></p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.museostibbert.it/frontend/index.php?lang=ENG" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stibbert Museum</a>, founded by Frederick Stibbert in the 1800s, showcases his extraordinary collection of weaponry, artwork and everyday objects from European, Islamic and East Asian cultures, with a notable focus on Japan. This house museum offers a unique glimpse into the diverse civilizations that influenced Stibbert’s eclectic collection, making it one of Florence’s most interesting stops (in my personal opinion).</p>
<p><strong>Innocenti Museum</strong></p>
<p>Founded in Florence during the first half of the 15th century, the <a href="https://www.istitutodeglinnocenti.it/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Istituto degli Innocenti</a> was the first institution in the world devoted exclusively to childcare. The museum’s journey begins in the basement, showcasing the history of the institution through interactive displays about the children and nannies who lived there. On the ground floor, visitors explore Brunelleschi&#8217;s Renaissance architecture, including the Loggia degli Innocenti and the Men and Women Courtyards, highlighting the unique iron window used to receive children. The top floor features an impressive art collection, with works by Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and other Renaissance masters.</p>
<p><strong>Museo Horne</strong></p>
<p>Located in a historic 15th-century building in Florence, the <a href="https://www.museohorne.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Horne Museum</a> houses the collection of art historian and collector Herbert Percy Horne. Filled with objects dating from the 14th to 16th centuries, the museum offers a glimpse into Renaissance domestic life through paintings, sculptures, ceramics and furniture carefully arranged as Horne instructed after his death. Highlights include masterpieces like Giotto’s <em>St. Stephen</em>, Simone Martini’s <em>Madonna and Child</em> and works by Filippo Lippi, Beccafumi and Pietro Lorenzetti.</p>

<p><strong>Restaurants &amp; Cafés:</strong></p>
<p><strong>Trattoria Sabatino</strong></p>
<p><a href="https://www.trattoriasabatino.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Trattoria Sabatino</a> is a cozy, family-run eatery in Florence known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine and traditional dishes that change on the daily thanks to an old-school typewritten menu. It’s no frills, cheap and they don’t take reservations, but that only adds to the charm.</p>
<p><strong>Osteria dell&#8217;Enoteca</strong></p>
<p><a href="https://www.osteriadellenoteca.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Osteria dell&#8217;Enoteco</a> is charming spot in the <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/our-guide-to-florences-oltrarno-neighborhood.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oltrarno</a> district that has won the praise of the hard-to-please Slow Food Osterie Guide. In addition to hand-selected wines, they offer delicious, locally sourced Tuscan cuisine with <em>bistecca alla fiorentina</em> (Florentine t-bone steak) being the star of the show. If you go, order the <em>peposo</em>-filled ravioli to start and thank me later.</p>

<h3>After living away in Switzerland for awhile, what was the best part of returning to Florence?</h3>
<p>Returning to Florence felt almost euphoric, like slipping into your favorite sweater after a long day. My biggest struggle in Switzerland was the constant pause while I fumbled through my German, but that awkward silence vanished the second we landed back here. Everything in Florence feels like home – from the bustling markets and cozy restaurants to the parks. In Switzerland, eating out was a rare luxury thanks to the sky-high prices, but here? I’m constantly amazed at the incredible food we can enjoy for a fraction of the cost. Let’s just say, both my heart and my stomach are very happy to be home.</p>

<p>One of the biggest Italy tips we share with guests trying to decide when to visit Italy is that Florence is the perfect size to enjoy during the winter. Even with cooler temps, when you&#8217;re staying right in the historic center you&#8217;re never very far from world-class museums like the <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/tour/uffizi-gallery-guided-skip-line" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Uffizi</a> or one of the many <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/6-hidden-gems-in-florence.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">smaller museums and hidden gems in Florence</a>. It is a city so rich with history, beauty and tempting restaurants, and there&#8217;s no better time to enjoy an in-depth visit (the best kind!) than during the winter months. Looking for a cozy and inviting place to stay? Here are some of our top choices for a winter escape in Florence this year!</p>
<div id="attachment_63833" style="width: 1630px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/vrp/unit/concerto" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63833" class="wp-image-63833 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/italy-perfect-allegro-location.jpg" alt="" width="1620" height="1080" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/italy-perfect-allegro-location.jpg 1620w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/italy-perfect-allegro-location-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/italy-perfect-allegro-location-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/italy-perfect-allegro-location-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/italy-perfect-allegro-location-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/italy-perfect-allegro-location-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1620px) 100vw, 1620px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-63833" class="wp-caption-text">Enjoy a dream location near the Ponte Vecchio and Uffizi at our Concerto, Amore &amp; Allegro apartments.</p></div>
<p>Set on a historic street right between the Ponte Vecchio and the Uffizi museum, our Concerto, Amore and Allegro apartments are all beautifully remodeled and decorated with a designer&#8217;s touch. It doesn&#8217;t get more central than this! In moments you&#8217;ll be strolling along the Arno or walking over the Ponte Vecchio. You&#8217;re just minutes from the entrance to the Uffizi while the Piazza della Signoria and Duomo are just a short walk away. Even better, you can enjoy beautiful views from each one of the apartments over the rooftops of Florence.</p>

<h2>Art and History Brought to Life in Florence this Winter</h2>
<div id="attachment_63774" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63774" class="size-full wp-image-63774" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/florence-duomo-alexandra-smielova-IaFft-MrrpU-unsplash.jpg" alt="Florence winter" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/florence-duomo-alexandra-smielova-IaFft-MrrpU-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/florence-duomo-alexandra-smielova-IaFft-MrrpU-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/florence-duomo-alexandra-smielova-IaFft-MrrpU-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/florence-duomo-alexandra-smielova-IaFft-MrrpU-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/florence-duomo-alexandra-smielova-IaFft-MrrpU-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/florence-duomo-alexandra-smielova-IaFft-MrrpU-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63774" class="wp-caption-text">See Florence&#8217;s top sights this winter. <h3>See the Duomo without the Crowds</h3>
<p>Seeing the beautiful <a href="https://duomo.firenze.it/en/discover/cathedral" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore</a>, also called the Duomo, is a must while in Florence. However, there&#8217;s so much more to see than just the outside &#8211; even if the exterior is a marvel in itself! Be sure to go inside the Duomo, which is always free to visit, to gaze up at the marvelous 16th-century frescoes decorating the inside of Brunelleschi&#8217;s dome by the Italian Renaissance painters Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari. Even better, following the spiraling staircase to the top of the <a href="https://duomo.firenze.it/en/discover/dome" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dome</a> for a stunning view over Florence. Of if you&#8217;ve already been to the top of the dome, why not burn off a gelato or two getting a close-up view of <a href="https://duomo.firenze.it/en/discover/giotto-s-bell-tower" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Giotto&#8217;s bell tower</a>, which rewards your climb with a great view &#8211; especially of the red-tiled cupola of the Duomo. Separate from the Duomo, don&#8217;t miss the chance to visit the <a href="https://duomo.firenze.it/en/discover/baptistry" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Baptistery</a> to see its golden mosaics or the surprisingly good <a href="https://duomo.firenze.it/en/discover/opera-duomo-museum" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Opera del Duomo Museum</a>.</p>
<p>TIP: Get yourself a <a href="https://operaduomofirenze.skiperformance.com/en/store" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brunelleschi Pass</a>, which gives you access over 3 days to all the experiences at the Duomo with one ticket, including the Baptistery of San Giovanni, Giotto&#8217;s Bell Tower, Brunelleschi&#8217;s Dome and the Opera del Duomo Museum.</p>

<h3>Visit Michelangelo&#8217;s Secret Space</h3>
<p>This winter don&#8217;t miss the chance to be among the first visitors to see Michelangelo&#8217;s &#8220;secret room&#8221; at the <a href="http://www.bargellomusei.beniculturali.it/musei/2/medicee/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Museum of the Medici Chapels</a>. Discovered in 1975, these hidden away rooms with charcoal drawings created by Michelangelo Buonarroti are being opened for the first time &#8211; and just for a limited time. Only four visitors will be allowed at at time with advance reservation now until March 30, 2024. <h3>Create Your Own Art in Florence!</h3>
<p>While strolling around Florence, you&#8217;ll surely spot shop windows full of beautiful marbled paper. One of our favorites is <a href="https://www.giuliogiannini.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Giulio Giannini e Figlio</a>, a gorgeous shop in the Oltrarno just across from the Pitti Palace. Located in the same spot where it was founded in 1856, it&#8217;s now run by Maria Giannini, the <a href="https://www.giuliogiannini.com/en/content/the-6th-generation.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">6th generation of the family</a>. While the handmade paper, stationary and marbled paper covered journals make excellent gifts, you can also try your hand at creating a very special souvenir with a <a href="https://www.giuliogiannini.com/en/products-catalogue/0-78-78/workshops.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">marbled paper workshop</a>.</p>
<p>Feeling even more creative? Learn firsthand about the fresco painting process that artists like Michelangelo used and create your own masterpiece during a <a href="https://www.contexttravel.com/cities/florence/tours/fresco-workshop-tour?ref=VACATIONPERFECT" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Florence Fresco Painting Class</a>. Or, if you&#8217;re not feeling brave enough to try your hand at painting or marbling paper, experience the creative side of Florence on an <a href="https://www.contexttravel.com/cities/florence/tours/florence-oltrarno-artisans-tour?ref=VACATIONPERFECT" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Artisan Walk in Oltrarno</a>.</p>

<p>Any frequent traveler to Florence likely has their favorite season to visit Italy&#8217;s famous Renaissance city. Food lovers flock in the fall, flower enthusiasts adore the spring and everyone can find something to love about the winter holiday festivities and summertime <em>dolce vita.</em> In short, you’re spoiled for choice when picking a good time to stay in Florence. Each season has its highlights, so consider this our case for spending at least one autumn, winter, spring and summer in the capital of Tuscany.</p>

<h2>Autumn</h2>
<p>You don’t want to miss <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/harvest-time-in-tuscany.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the harvest time in Tuscany</a>, which runs from late September to mid-October and yields some of the most delicious things to taste in Florence’s restaurants. The <em>vendemmia</em>, or grape harvest, sees farmers picking grapes to not only bottle into Tuscan wines, but also to bake into <em>schiacciata con l’uva</em>—a sweet and sticky flatbread you’ll be able to sample at the bakeries around town.</p>
<p>The early Tuscan olive harvest, meanwhile, guarantees that you’ll start to see bottles of deep green, peppery oil popping up with the “<em>olio nuovo</em>” (new oil) label in Florentine shops and restaurants. The best way to taste it? On a slice of toasted, unsalted Tuscan bread.</p>
<div id="attachment_63540" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63540" class="size-full wp-image-63540" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-tuscany-flo-p-73LOeLfo2Bw-unsplash.jpg" alt="autumn in Florence Italy" width="1680" height="1260" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-tuscany-flo-p-73LOeLfo2Bw-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-tuscany-flo-p-73LOeLfo2Bw-unsplash-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-tuscany-flo-p-73LOeLfo2Bw-unsplash-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-tuscany-flo-p-73LOeLfo2Bw-unsplash-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-tuscany-flo-p-73LOeLfo2Bw-unsplash-1536x1152.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63540" class="wp-caption-text">Autumn is a tasty time to visit Florence! (<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/73LOeLfo2Bw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>These harvests—in addition to all the fresh truffles, porcini mushrooms, chestnuts and pumpkins growing in the countryside—make autumn the best time to dine in Tuscany. With temperatures hovering in the comfortably cool 50s to 70s range, the mood is just right to tuck into a plate of <em>tagliolini al tartufo</em>, pappardelle with wild boar sauce, or pumpkin ravioli and fried porcini. Taste the bounty at Florence’s many <em>trattorie</em>, or visit <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/five-tuscan-fall-festivals.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tuscan fall festivals</a> in nearby towns like Greve, Impruneta and San Miniato.</p>
<p>As for what to do between meals, the fall means Florence’s theaters reopen after their summer breaks. Film buffs may want to check out the <a href="https://www.cinemalacompagnia.it/evento/50_giorni_di_cinema_a_firenze/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">50 Giorni di Cinema a Firenze</a>, a festival running from early October to mid-December and showcasing international filmmakers. In the mood for the theater? Teatro della Pergola, Teatro Verdi and Teatro Puccini begin their seasons in September and October.</p>

(<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/lwtfO-LsEW8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<h2>Winter</h2>
<p>You’ll need a coat and an umbrella if you’re visiting Florence between late November and February—but fear not, there are tons of <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/rainy-day-in-florence.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">things to do on a rainy day in Florence</a>. Better yet, as the high tourist season ends and the holiday festivities begin, winter reveals itself to be <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/winter-is-the-best-kept-secret-in-italy.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the best-kept secret in Italy</a>.</p>
<p>Though you’ll thoroughly enjoy escaping the rain by popping into one of Florence’s countless cafes for a cup of rich hot chocolate or one of the 72 museums for art and history, there’s plenty of outdoor fun to be had this time of year. Starting in late November, for one, Florence’s main Christmas market in Piazza Santa Croce opens. Grab Polish sausages or Czech pastries—and a steaming cup of Italian mulled wine to wash them down—all while shopping for ornaments and relishing the holiday cheer.</p>
<div id="attachment_61498" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-61498" class="size-full wp-image-61498" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2250-piazza-santa-croce-Christmas-Market.jpg" alt="Winter in Florence" width="1680" height="1058" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2250-piazza-santa-croce-Christmas-Market.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2250-piazza-santa-croce-Christmas-Market-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2250-piazza-santa-croce-Christmas-Market-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2250-piazza-santa-croce-Christmas-Market-768x484.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2250-piazza-santa-croce-Christmas-Market-1536x967.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-61498" class="wp-caption-text">Christmas festivities in Piazza Santa Croce.</p></div>
<p>The days surrounding the Immaculate Conception on December 8, a national holiday, mark the lighting of the towering Christmas tree in Piazza Duomo. All month long, you’ll want to bundle up for glorious evening strolls to admire twinkling lights all over the city. Highlights include the decorations on Ponte Vecchio and along the luxury Via de Tornabuoni shopping street, the nativity scenes at the Santo Spirito and Santa Maria del Fiore churches, and trees at Palazzo Vecchio and Piazzale Michelangelo.</p>
<p>Want more holiday fun? There’s an ice-skating rink, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/florenceicevillage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Florence Ice Village</a>, near the Fortezza da Basso every year, as well as smaller Christmas markets and local events throughout December. The festivities culminate with Christmas Eve and Day Mass in the Cathedral of Florence, then settle down after January 6—the day of the Epiphany. This national holiday includes a parade reenacting the journey of the wise men to the nativity, plus glimpses of La Befana, the old woman who delivered gifts to Italian children the night before.</p>
<p>After a quiet January, <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/florence-in-february-winter-fun-and-carnival-celebrations.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Florence in February</a> marks the beginning of Carnival season. This lively time of year means you’ll be able taste typical pre-Lent treats—like <em>frittelle di riso</em>, or fried rice pudding balls—and delight in traditional parades. While the most famous are in Venice and Viareggio, Florence’s own Carnival procession happens the weekend before Lent in Piazza Signoria, and it promises plenty of masks, 18th-century costumes and papier-mâché floats.</p>
<div id="attachment_63536" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63536" class="size-full wp-image-63536" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/florence-wisteria-bardini-gardens.jpg" alt="Florence spring" width="1680" height="1066" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/florence-wisteria-bardini-gardens.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/florence-wisteria-bardini-gardens-300x190.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/florence-wisteria-bardini-gardens-1024x650.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/florence-wisteria-bardini-gardens-768x487.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/florence-wisteria-bardini-gardens-1536x975.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63536" class="wp-caption-text">Cascades of wisteria blooming in Florence.</p></div>
<h2>Spring</h2>
<p>With daytime temperatures in the 60s and sweet-smelling wisteria and jasmine blooming all over the city, sunny spring is a fabulous time to be in Florence. The season kicks off with Easter, which is really a two-day affair thanks to <a href="https://www.visitflorence.com/florence-events/easter-sunday-and-monday-in-florence.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pasqua on Sunday and Pasquetta (little Easter) on Monday</a>. This gives you two excuses to book a long lunch of lamb, <em>torta pasqualina</em>, asparagus and local fava beans served with pecorino. On Sunday morning, don’t miss the 300-year-old tradition of the Explosion of the Cart, when a dove-shaped rocket is shot at the cart from the inside of the Florence Cathedral—creating a fireworks display right in front of the Duomo. On Monday, grab a traditional dove-shaped <em>colomba</em> cake to take to a picnic at one of the gardens below. Florence’s major museums are open on both Sunday and Monday, making this holiday weekend particularly spirited.</p>
<div id="attachment_63537" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63537" class="size-full wp-image-63537" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-eleonora-altomare-9s-kR3y6cRQ-unsplash.jpg" alt="spring in Florence" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-eleonora-altomare-9s-kR3y6cRQ-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-eleonora-altomare-9s-kR3y6cRQ-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-eleonora-altomare-9s-kR3y6cRQ-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-eleonora-altomare-9s-kR3y6cRQ-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-eleonora-altomare-9s-kR3y6cRQ-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-eleonora-altomare-9s-kR3y6cRQ-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63537" class="wp-caption-text">Spring is the perfect time to enjoy scenic walks in Florence. (<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/9s-kR3y6cRQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>If your ideal Italian vacation involves strolling around gardens, then you’ll definitely want to plan your Florence trip for around late April or early May. This is when the somewhat under-the-radar <a href="http://societaitalianairis.com/chi-siamo/giardino/">Iris Garden</a>, tucked behind Piazzale Michelangelo, opens for its annual four-week window. Free of charge, sit on a bench to admire irises of all hues, which attract horticulturalists from all over the world. This is also the best time of year to visit the <a href="https://www.villabardini.it/en/villa-garden/garden/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bardini Garden</a>, as its mesmerizing, Instagram-famous wisteria pergola is in full violet bloom. For a full day of soaking up fragrant flowers, buy a ticket for both the Bardini and <a href="https://www.uffizi.it/en/boboli-garden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boboli Gardens</a>, which have plenty of flower-speckled hillsides for lounging on a blanket. Finally, stop at the <a href="https://www.visitflorence.com/what-to-see-in-florence/gardens-in-florence.html">Rose Garden</a> on your way back to the city center, whose 350 varieties of roses are at their peak in the spring.</p>
<div id="attachment_63534" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63534" class="size-full wp-image-63534" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-getty-images-rWI-_8KDG2w-unsplash.jpg" alt="Florence summer" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-getty-images-rWI-_8KDG2w-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-getty-images-rWI-_8KDG2w-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-getty-images-rWI-_8KDG2w-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-getty-images-rWI-_8KDG2w-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-getty-images-rWI-_8KDG2w-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-getty-images-rWI-_8KDG2w-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63534" class="wp-caption-text">Sunny summer days in Florence.</p></div>
<h2>Summer</h2>
<p>Summers in Florence are <em>hot</em>, which means it’s the ideal season to wake up early, stay out late and take full advantage of afternoon siestas. Wear cool clothing and slather on the sunscreen, and you’ll have plenty of fun experiencing Florence’s high season.</p>
<p>Any local will tell you that the highlight of summer in the city—besides cooling down with an Aperol spritz or a cone from <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/where-to-find-the-best-places-for-gelato-on-your-florence-vacation.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the best gelaterias in Florence</a>—is the exhilarating local game of <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/calcio-storico-florences-exhilarating-local-game.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Calcio Storico</a>. This traditional sport is an intense combination of soccer, rugby and wrestling, and it sees 27 brave volunteers from each of the four districts of Florence—Santa Maria Novella (the red team), Santo Spirito (white), Santa Croce (blue) and San Giovanni (green)—battle it out in the name of pure love for their city. If you’re lucky enough to snag a ticket to the semifinals and final match in June, you’ll sit in the stands overlooking a sandy field set up in Piazza Santa Croce. Otherwise, <a href="https://www.vacationperfect.com/rentals/florence/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">book one of our apartments</a> in the piazza for a bird’s eye view of the action. The June 24 final begins with an afternoon parade through Florence, when medieval costumed players (and their rowdy supporters) make their way toward Santa Croce to the beating of drums and much fanfare.</p>
<div id="attachment_63535" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63535" class="size-full wp-image-63535" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-vanessa-R96AetbSKfw-unsplash.jpg" alt="Florence gelato" width="1680" height="2240" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-vanessa-R96AetbSKfw-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-vanessa-R96AetbSKfw-unsplash-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-vanessa-R96AetbSKfw-unsplash-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-vanessa-R96AetbSKfw-unsplash-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/italy-florence-vanessa-R96AetbSKfw-unsplash-1536x2048.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63535" class="wp-caption-text">Cool off with a gelato in Florence. (<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/R96AetbSKfw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>On the same day, Florence celebrates the Festa di San Giovanni, or the feast day for its patron saint, St. John the Baptist. The day begins with mass and a civic parade from Palazzo Vecchio to the Baptistry of Florence. If you’re in the mood for a climb (and a rewarding view), one lesser known perk of the holiday is the reopening of San Niccolò tower, a fixture of Florence’s ancient city walls that can be seen in a guided small-group tour. After dinner, grab a spot along the Arno to watch the annual fireworks display—perhaps the only time of year when you get to see the Ponte Vecchio illuminated by dazzling fireworks.</p>

<p>Florence’s color palette is one of soft yellows, sky blues and—thanks to the rolling hillsides, olive groves and clusters of cypresses surrounding the city—glorious greens. When you’re ready to emerge from art-filled museums and cozy trattorias, you’ll find that going outside is one of the best <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/free-things-to-do-in-florence.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">free things to do in Florence</a>. Whether you prefer to meander uphill toward <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/feast-eyes-unforgettable-florence-views.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unforgettable Florence views</a> or enjoy a leisurely picnic in the shade, these are our favorite ways to enjoy a breath of fresh air in the Renaissance city.</p>

<div id="attachment_63485" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63485" class="size-full wp-image-63485" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-view-john-d-R4PE6oRTbHE-unsplash.jpg" alt="Florence garden views" width="1680" height="1055" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-view-john-d-R4PE6oRTbHE-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-view-john-d-R4PE6oRTbHE-unsplash-300x188.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-view-john-d-R4PE6oRTbHE-unsplash-1024x643.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-view-john-d-R4PE6oRTbHE-unsplash-768x482.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-view-john-d-R4PE6oRTbHE-unsplash-1536x965.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63485" class="wp-caption-text">Take in views of Florence&#8217;s iconic landmarks from the Piazzale Michelangelo. (<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/R4PE6oRTbHE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<h3>Walk to Piazzale Michelangelo</h3>
<p>The best known vantage point to admire not only Florence’s Duomo and skyline, but also its surrounding hillside villages, is Piazzale Michelangelo. There are many ways to get there, including our go-to <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/feast-eyes-unforgettable-florence-views.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unforgettable Florence views walk</a>, a 2-mile route that starts at the Ponte Vecchio and winds along Via de’ Bardi and Via di San Niccolo before the grand finish.</p>
<p>Fortunately, for those craving a walk in solitude, there are also some lesser known “urban hikes” toward Florence’s most famous viewpoint. One route passes by the <a href="https://www.visittuscany.com/en/attractions/forte-belvedere-florence/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Forte Belvedere</a>—a 1500s fortress that now serves as an exhibition space—and traverses winding streets lined with stone walls and enviable villas. Using <a href="https://www.signorvino.com/it/negozi/toscana/firenze/firenze_dei_bardi_46%2Fr_48%2Fr/B009.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Signorvino</a> (Via de&#8217; Bardi, 46/R) as your starting point and facing away from the Arno, turn left and you’ll see a tunneled street heading upward: That’s Costa dei Magnoli, the only uphill portion of this walk. Climb this quiet residential road and feel an immediate sense of calm, passing <a href="https://www.villabardini.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Villa Bardini</a> on your left before running straight into Forte Belvedere. When it’s open in the summer months, stop by for a coffee on the incredible panoramic rooftop. Otherwise, keep walking along a twisting road called Via di San Leonardo, where your only companions are chirping birds and olive trees. After 15 minutes, you’ll reach Viale Galileo, a busier road with a beautiful, tree-lined walkway for pedestrians. Now you’ll be able to appreciate that steep climb from the beginning of the walk: Turn left on the path, and you’ll have spectacular views of the city below. Your first glimpse of the Duomo will guide you from here; keep following the path, and you’ll reach Piazzale Michelangelo within 20 minutes.</p>
<div id="attachment_63487" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63487" class="size-full wp-image-63487" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-danielle-suijkerbuijk-54TLJQZmK8I-unsplash.jpg" alt="Florence garden walks" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-danielle-suijkerbuijk-54TLJQZmK8I-unsplash.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-danielle-suijkerbuijk-54TLJQZmK8I-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-danielle-suijkerbuijk-54TLJQZmK8I-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-danielle-suijkerbuijk-54TLJQZmK8I-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-danielle-suijkerbuijk-54TLJQZmK8I-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-danielle-suijkerbuijk-54TLJQZmK8I-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63487" class="wp-caption-text">Catch glimpses of Florence on the walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo. (<a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/54TLJQZmK8I" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<p>Another way to reach Viale Galileo and Piazzale Michelangelo begins in Porta Romana, also in the <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/our-guide-to-florences-oltrarno-neighborhood.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oltrarno neighborhood</a>. Beginning at the neighborhood’s namesake 13th-century gate, turn left onto Viale Machiavelli. This popular walking path is lined with trees on both sides, giving runners a respite from the sun. It also passes by the perfect pit stop for a picnic or a rest: Giardino del Bobolino, not to be confused with the Boboli Gardens. This grassy park has a turtle pond, fountain and lots of tall trees welcoming you to lounge under the shade. Spend some time here before continuing along Viale Machiavelli, which then becomes Viale Galileo as it heads toward Piazzale Michelangelo.</p>
<div id="attachment_62726" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-62726" class="size-full wp-image-62726" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/florence-giardino-delle-rose-firenze.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1141" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/florence-giardino-delle-rose-firenze.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/florence-giardino-delle-rose-firenze-300x204.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/florence-giardino-delle-rose-firenze-1024x695.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/florence-giardino-delle-rose-firenze-768x522.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/florence-giardino-delle-rose-firenze-1536x1043.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-62726" class="wp-caption-text">Beautiful views from the Rose Garden (<a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Giardino_delle_rose,_firenze,_veduta.JPG" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<h3>Have a picnic and smell the flowers at the Rose Garden</h3>
<p>Just below Piazzale Michelangelo is the <a href="https://www.visitflorence.com/what-to-see-in-florence/gardens-in-florence.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Giardino delle Rose</a>, Florence’s best place to admire flowers for free. Open year-round, the garden is at its peak from May to June, the most impressive time to see the more than 300 rose varieties while they’re in bloom. No matter the season, it’s a lovely place to have a picnic, catch up with a friend or take in a flower-framed view of Florence from 9 a.m. until sunset.</p>
<div id="attachment_63478" style="width: 1610px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63478" class="size-full wp-image-63478" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-giardino-dell-iris.jpg" alt="Florence Italy garden" width="1600" height="1200" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-giardino-dell-iris.jpg 1600w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-giardino-dell-iris-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-giardino-dell-iris-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-giardino-dell-iris-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-giardino-dell-iris-1536x1152.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63478" class="wp-caption-text">Catching Florence&#8217;s iris garden in bloom is a spring treat. (<a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Giradino_dell%27iris_2.JPG" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<h3>See competition-winning flowers at the Iris Garden</h3>
<p>It’s easy to understand why the <a href="http://societaitalianairis.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Giardino dell’Iris</a> is so under the radar: Tucked behind Piazzale Michelangelo, this space is only open for about four weeks a year, when the Italian Iris Society gives the public the chance to view the flowers’ short bloom from late April to late May. The irises’ purple, blue, orange, and pink shades are so splendid, they’re fit for the international iris competition hosted at Florence’s very own garden. Best of all, the iris (or <em>giglio</em>) is a symbol of Florence, making this free garden the perfect place to pause and appreciate the city.</p>
<div id="attachment_63479" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63479" class="size-full wp-image-63479" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-giardino-dell-Orticultura.jpg" alt="Florence Italy garden" width="1680" height="1113" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-giardino-dell-Orticultura.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-giardino-dell-Orticultura-300x199.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-giardino-dell-Orticultura-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-giardino-dell-Orticultura-768x509.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/florence-giardino-dell-Orticultura-1536x1018.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63479" class="wp-caption-text">Exploring the Giardino dell’Orticoltura. (<a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Giardino_dell%27Orticultura_08.jpg?uselang=it" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit</a>)</p></div>
<h3>Sit by the dragon sculpture at the Horticulture Garden</h3>
<p>The focal point of the Giardino dell’Orticoltura is an 1800s tepidarium built from iron and glass. Check it out in the spring and summer for flower fairs and cultural events. Another highlight of the park is a staircase flanked by a dragon sculpture with colorful stone scales. It’s the perfect place to sit and eat a panino on your way to the off-the-beaten-path <a href="http://www.museostibbert.it/frontend/index.php?lang=ENG" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stibbert Museum</a> showcasing historic armory, ceramics and paintings.</p>
<h3>Exercise in Florence’s answer to Central Park</h3>
<p>Covering a sprawling 395 acres, Cascine Park is by far Florence’s largest green space. Originally a hunting reserve for the Medici family, it’s now a local favorite for jogs along a wide, paved, dog-friendly pathway that follows the Arno. Bring a book and wander into the park for a quiet afternoon, or enjoy a little more activity with your green space. There’s an open-air market on Tuesday mornings selling everything from plants to <em>porchetta</em>, a bustling public pool in the summer months and even a carnival. If you have kids, bring them: Cascine has a playground and plenty of grassy areas for a game of frisbee.</p>
<h2><strong>Gardens with Paid Entry</strong><strong> </strong></h2>
<div id="attachment_63055" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63055" class="size-full wp-image-63055" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Italy-perfect-boboli-gardens.jpg" alt="" width="1680" height="1117" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Italy-perfect-boboli-gardens.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Italy-perfect-boboli-gardens-300x199.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Italy-perfect-boboli-gardens-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Italy-perfect-boboli-gardens-768x511.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Italy-perfect-boboli-gardens-1536x1021.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Italy-perfect-boboli-gardens-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63055" class="wp-caption-text">Splendid fountains in the Boboli Gardens.</p></div>
<h3><a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/tour/boboli-gardens-skip-the-line" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boboli Gardens</a></h3>
<p>These must-see gardens date back to the 1500s and have as much splendor as you’d expect from the Medici family’s personal backyard to the Pitti Palace. Well worth the combination ticket that gets you into both the outdoor space and Palatine Gallery, these gardens have a ton of variety: Walk among fragrant lemon trees outside of the Limonaia, marvel at ornate statues and fountains and enjoy quiet tree-lined paths that open up to prime photo-ops of Florence. The best view, though, is from the highest point of the gardens—which just so happens to be the Porcelain Museum. If you&#8217;re just planning to visit the gardens, avoid a wait to enter with <a href="https://www.italyperfect.com/tour/boboli-gardens-skip-the-line" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boboli Gardens skip the line tickets</a> for easy access.</p>
<div id="attachment_63213" style="width: 1690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63213" class="wp-image-63213 size-full" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/italy-perfect-bardini-gardens-view.jpg" alt="Florence Bardini Gardens" width="1680" height="1120" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/italy-perfect-bardini-gardens-view.jpg 1680w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/italy-perfect-bardini-gardens-view-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/italy-perfect-bardini-gardens-view-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/italy-perfect-bardini-gardens-view-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/italy-perfect-bardini-gardens-view-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/italy-perfect-bardini-gardens-view-600x400.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1680px) 100vw, 1680px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63213" class="wp-caption-text">Spectacular Florence views from the Bardini Gardens.</p></div>
<h3>Bardini Garden</h3>
<p>Yet another idyllic museum-and-a-garden offering in Florence can be found at <a href="https://www.villabardini.it/en/villa-garden/garden/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Villa Bardini</a>. While the museum’s exhibits are ever-changing, the fabulous terraced garden is a constant. Sit on a bench and let your eyes wander over the Baroque staircase and sculptures before meandering along the gravel pathway flanked by oaks and cypresses. The gardens’ crown jewel is a famed wisteria pergola that begins to flower in April—there’s even a <a href="https://www.villabardini.it/webcam/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">webcam</a> so you can plan your visit around its progress!</p>
<div id="attachment_63480" style="width: 1610px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-63480" class="size-full wp-image-63480" src="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Florence-giardino-torrigiani.jpg" alt="Florence Italy parks and gardens" width="1600" height="1200" srcset="https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Florence-giardino-torrigiani.jpg 1600w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Florence-giardino-torrigiani-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Florence-giardino-torrigiani-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Florence-giardino-torrigiani-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.italyperfect.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Florence-giardino-torrigiani-1536x1152.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><p id="caption-attachment-63480" class="wp-caption-text">The distinctive Gothic revival tower of the Torrigiani gardens. <h3>Torrigiani Gardens</h3>
<p>Though the <a href="http://www.giardinotorrigiani.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Giardini Torrigiani</a> are privately owned by two families who still live on the grounds, they are indeed open to the public—as long as you call ahead and <a href="https://girlinflorence.com/2014/10/06/lost-in-the-biggest-secret-garden-in-florence/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reserve a tour</a> for your party. The largest private garden in a European city, this carefully preserved 25-acre space is replete with exotic tree species, marble artworks, lemon houses and countless stories from its 500-year history. <h2><strong>Restaurants Among Greenery</strong></h2>
<p>If you’d like to enjoy the outdoors in a dignified culinary setting, you’re in the right city. In the summer months, Florence’s Giardino Antonino Caponnetto—a grassy area on the banks of the Arno, situated to the east of the San Niccolo bridge—comes to life with food stalls selling everything from hamburgers and pizza to fried seafood and vegan fare. Go with friends, and you can all pick up your preferred meals before eating together at communal tables.</p>
<p>The Oltrarno neighborhood boasts three great restaurants for coffee, aperitivo or a meal outdoors. A civilized pit stop on Viale Galileo, <a href="https://www.chalet-fontana.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chalet Fontana</a> serves modern Tuscan food with a view of its garden and flower shop. In San Frediano, <a href="https://www.santarosabistrot.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Santarosa Bistrot</a> is a popular spot with the younger crowd for seafood-focused fare in the Henry Dunant garden, dedicated to the founder of the Red Cross. And at what may be the dreamiest place to relax or work remotely in Florence, <a href="https://www.ilconventinofirenze.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Il Conventino</a> has plenty of tables for sipping coffee among cypress trees.</p>
