There’s a certain magic to summer in Italy, and it’s the kind that stays with you long after your trip ends. It might be the golden evening light over a Tuscan hilltop or the simple joy of a spritz in a sunny piazza. Maybe it’s the music that fills the air on a warm Roman night or the type of relaxation that only comes with picture-perfect Amalfi Coast views. If you’ve been dreaming of an Italian getaway, we’re sharing some of the things we love most about summer in Italy. There’s still time to plan your own 2025 adventure!

See Florence Full of Color

Florence really comes alive in the summer, and not just because of the sunshine over the the terracotta rooftops. In June there’s an exciting build up for one of the most unusual sport traditions you’ll ever witness: Calcio Storico Fiorentino. Imagine a historic mash-up of soccer, rugby and raw Renaissance spirit, all played out in the heart of the city in Piazza Santa Croce. It’s exhilarating, chaotic and purely Florentine!

Then there’s Estate Fiesolana, running from June 6 to September 11, 2025, an outdoor cultural festival set in the ancient Roman amphitheater of Fiesole, just a short drive or bus ride from the city center. Picture yourself under the stars listening to live music, watching a play or soaking in a ballet performance, all with the hills of Tuscany as your backdrop. It’s the kind of summer night you never forget!

And, of course, no mention of summer near Florence is complete without the Palio di Siena. This isn’t just a horse race, it’s a centuries-old spectacle of medieval costumes and passion. Held on July 2 and again on August 16 in Siena’s breathtaking Piazza del Campo, it’s easy to reach as a day trip from Florence.

A Roman Summer Holiday

If Florence is all about tradition and romance, Rome turns the dial to “celebration.” The summer kicks off with Festa della Repubblica on June 2, Italy’s National Day. The military parade down Via dei Fori Imperiali is as grand as the Colosseum itself, and the aerial display by the Frecce Tricolori—Italy’s acrobatic flight team—is a thrill every time.

Then all summer long, the Roma Summer Fest takes over the elegant Auditorium Parco della Musica. The lineup always includes an exciting mix of international stars and Italian icons, but what makes it truly special is the chance to hear incredible music under the Roman sky.

And don’t miss Lungo il Tevere in July, when the banks of the Tiber transform into a buzzing riverside scene. Think pop-up bars, art stalls, live music, late-night strolls and delicious foods. It’s Rome’s answer to the ultimate summer evening!

And let’s not forget: this is a Jubilee Year and the arrival of Pope Leo XIV, so there’s an extra dose of energy and special events experiences all over the city.

A Peaceful Escape on the Amalfi Coast

Need a quieter pace? There’s still time to plan a summer getaway on the Amalfi Coast. We’ve hand-picked the most beautiful villas in the quieter corners of Italy’s most-popular coastline, where you can soak up the beauty without the crowds.

One of our favorite spots? Vista Flora and Vista Serena offer picture-perfect views and lush gardens that are made for lazy summer afternoons. Or plan a stay at Lantana Villa with incredible views of the Gulf of Naples. It’s the kind of place where your biggest decision is whether to sip your Aperol spritz by the pool or watch the sun dip into the sea from the outdoor lounge.

If you’re planning a trip to Rome next year, chances are high that you’ve seen and heard a lot of chatter about the 2025 Jubilee. This extraordinary event (actually considered “ordinary,” but we’ll get to that) draws millions of people to Rome and involves months of preparation at sites all over the city. For travelers planning a trip around the Jubilee, there’s a rush of excitement at being able to participate in such an important event. However, if you’re planning a trip to Rome that doesn’t involve Jubilee celebrations, you might find yourself making some last minute adjustments or arriving to find longer than usual lines for the places you’ve earmarked to visit. But with the right planning and a bit of background, your 2025 Roman holiday will be a truly unique experience.

The Eternal City is preparing for the Jubilee year.
What is the Jubilee?

Although we use the word to talk about different kinds of celebrations, the word jubilee actually comes from the Old Testament and was meant to describe a special year where sins, debts and other afflictions are pardoned. In the book of Leviticus, a jubilee occurred every 50 years, but in the 12th century Pope Boniface VIII decreed that it would occur every 25 years. As the centuries progressed, these Jubilee celebrations were known as “ordinary” (falling in the set period of years) or “extraordinary” if a Jubilee year was proclaimed for a particular motive. In 1933, for example, an extraordinary Jubilee was proclaimed to celebrate the 1,900th anniversary of the resurrection of Christ.

The most important feature of the Jubilee ritual is the opening and the final walling up of the “holy door” in each of the four great basilicas which the pilgrims are required to visit in Rome. These are St. Peter’s Basilica, Santa Maria Maggiore, San Giovanni in Laterano and San Paolo Fuori le Mura. The doors are opened by the Pope at the beginning of the Jubilee celebrations, which will be on December 24th, 2024, and then closed by him on January 6th, 2026. All over the world, Catholic churches dedicate a door for the Jubilee year to accommodate parishioners who are unable to make it to Rome. However, the auspiciousness of passing through one of the four holy doors is so powerful that up to 30 million pilgrims will make their way to Rome during the Jubilee year to complete this rite. Along the way, they’ll visit hundreds of sites around the city that are significant to the Catholic Church.

How Will it Affect Rome?

With so many people coming to Rome and circulating in such specific areas around the center of the city, there have been major preparations underway all year to get the city ready to host. And although work technically began in 2021, there are still many construction projects underway that will likely continue into the first few months of the Jubilee year. For instance, the tram lines that connect the Vatican City with other parts of Rome are in the midst of a major upgrade, and many of the most important sights around the area, including Castel Sant’Angelo and Piazza del Risorgimento, have had major detours. All over the city, the most important monuments are being cleaned and restored, meaning that they may be covered in layers of scaffolding until complete.

While the city has promised to be ready for the opening of the Jubilee doors on December 24th, it’s a pretty massive job with inevitable delays. Add to this the entirely unrelated construction work underway in Piazza Venezia, where a new metro line is being dug as part of a project that is expected to last at least 15 years, and you might think that Rome is in a “work in progress” phase. But they don’t call it the Eternal City for nothing, and there is still plenty to see, do and experience during your holiday.

Book tickets for the Vatican Museums well in advance. (credit)

Getting the Most Out of the City

First, get a good pair of walking shoes. Plan to stay in central Rome where you can rely on your feet to get around, as public transport is likely to be crowded and taxis might be fewer and farther between than normal. The Centro Storico will be just as bustling as ever and you’ll even find that iconic sights like the Trevi Fountain (currently undergoing a cleanup) will shine even brighter than usual, so there will be plenty to see on walks around town.

Second, plan your visit well – and well in advance. If your heart is set on visiting major attractions like the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Villa Borghese, get your tours and tickets sorted out as early as possible. Waiting until you’re in town to try to squeeze in a tour may prove to be a difficult task, and you don’t want to be disappointed. However, if you want to visit the Vatican Museums, keep in mind that the lines and crowds will be much larger than usual, so plan accordingly. If you might previously have needed a half day to visit, dedicate a day instead.

Third, remember that you’re visiting one of the greatest cities in the world at one of the most remarkable times. The Jubilee only occurs four times a century, and its a pretty incredible thing to witness. You’ll see people from all over the world coming for a ritual experience that dates back centuries. The minor inconveniences will hardly matter when you think back at this ordinary (and extraordinary!) event that you’ll take part in, from your own corner of Rome.

(credit)

When thinking of Rome’s ancient history, the Colosseum often the first thing that comes to mind. Perhaps you’ve already toured Italy’s most famous ancient arena or visited the Forum or stood and gazed up at the impressive dome of the Pantheon. While these ancient Roman sights are a must, especially for first-time visitors, the Eternal City is full of fascinating places to delve deeper into Rome’s rich past. Even better, many of them are far less crowded! Here are some incredible places to explore Rome’s ancient history beyond the Colosseum.

Explore the ruins of Emperor Nero’s Golden House.

The Colle Oppio and Terme di Traiano Park

You can start your exploration right next to the Colosseum at the Colle Oppio and Terme di Traiano Park, a nicely maintained park where you’ll find the ruins of Trajan’s baths and Emperor Nero’s once lavish Golden House, called the Domus Aurea. Book a tour to the Domus Aurea to marvel at the grandiose architecture of this once-glorious palace. Then stroll through the pretty Colle Oppio Park and see the ruins of Trajan’s Baths. It’s a peaceful spot to enjoy Rome’s storied past amidst beautiful greenery. Bonus: The park has one of the best views of the Colosseum too!

Largo di Torre Argentina

Surrounded by modern day Rome, it’s often a surprise to come across the intriguing Largo di Torre Argentina, home to the ruins of four ancient Roman temples and the remnants of Pompey’s Theatre. This archaeological site is also famously known as the location where Julius Caesar was assassinated. Today, it doubles as a sanctuary for Rome’s stray cats, adding a unique and charming twist to your historical exploration.
Teatro di Marcello

Sometimes mistaken for its more famous counterpart, the Colosseum, the Teatro di Marcello was commissioned by Julius Caesar and completed by Augustus. This ancient theater stands as a testament to Rome’s architectural brilliance, and its impressive structure even served as an inspiration for the Colosseum. While you can only see the theater from the outside, is a beautiful spot to stop and enjoy a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of Roman engineering.

Parco degli Acquedotti

Spend some time just outside of the city at the awe-inspiring Parco degli Acquedotti, part of the Appian Way Regional Park located southeast of Rome. If Italy has been on your bucket list of places to visit, then you’ll be happy to know that there are plenty of family-friendly attractions for children, teens and young adults in Rome. Before you start building your travel itinerary, book a spacious and family-friendly apartment rental in Rome with Vacation Perfect. Below you’ll find some of our favorite things to see and do during your family holiday in the Eternal City!

Explore Ancient Rome at the Colosseum

Rome is an amazing city for history buffs, but it has a wonderful appeal for travelers of all ages. That is certainly the case with awe-inspiring sights like the Colosseum. Our best tip is to book ahead with a Colosseum and Ancient Rome Private Tour with Skip-the-Line Tickets. A private experience and guide will bring the historic sites to life and make the experience fun for the whole family. Plus, saving time and long waits in a line is a must for kids!

If your kids are early risers, the best time to see the fountain is first thing in the morning, especially during the busier seasons of the year.

Ba’Ghetto

Located in the Jewish ghetto in Rome, Ba’Ghetto is a must for traditional dining in the area. It’s the oldest Jewish-Italian restaurant in the city, serving kosher versions of Italian classics since the 1980s. You’ll find delicious dishes like grilled lamb chops, kebabs, kosher bucatini all’amatriciana and the traditional carciofi alla giudia.

Ristorante la Campana

Ristorante La Campana has been one of Rome’s most historic restaurants since it opened in 1518. Yes, you read that right! The cuisine highlights authentic Roman dishes well prepared, such as cacio e pepe and coda alla vaccinara, and there’s a lovely wine menu. Head here for a casual yet upscale restaurant that’s popular with locals and tourists alike.

When it comes to exploring Rome’s rich cultural heritage, the city’s larger museums often steal the spotlight. While the Vatican Museums are astonishing, the complex is also the largest museum in Italy. However, tucked away amidst the bustling streets and historic landmarks are many exceptional and much smaller museums waiting to be discovered. Whether you are traveling with a 12 year old or just have a limited amount of time, make the most of it by visiting one of the city’s under-the-radar museums and galleries the next time you’re in the Eternal City. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in art, history and culture without the crowds, here are eight smaller museums in Rome that offer a more intimate yet equally impressive experience.

Surrounded by History in the Campo de’ Fiori Neighborhood

Nestled near Campo de’ Fiori, the Sonata apartment is set in the rione, or district, of Regola, which is built today on layers upon layers of history dating back to ancient times. Known for its medieval layout and Renaissance architecture, this neighborhood has been witness to centuries of transformation. Near the Sonata apartment is the beautiful Church of Santa Maria in Monticelli, which traces its origins to the 12th century. Originally built as a parish church, it underwent renovations in the 16th century to create a harmonious blend of Romanesque and Renaissance styles. The church is renowned for its beautiful frescoes above the altar. The rich blue, rust & gold colors even inspired the decor inside the Sonata apartment!

Largo di Torre Argentina

You don’t have to go far from the Sonata apartment to step back in time to Rome’s ancient past. Around the corner is the Largo di Torre Argentina, an ancient archaeological site encompassing four Roman temples that was uncovered between 1926 and 1929. Dating from the Republican era, the site is renowned as the place where, on the Ides of March in 44 BC, Julius Caesar met his untimely fate. You can see the ruins quite well simply walking around the entire perimeter since they are set below street level today. You can pay a small fee to walk down into the archaeological site where you’ll also find the Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary, a captivating intersection of ancient Rome’s political significance and a modern haven for cat lovers.

Galleria Spada

While visiting Rome’s big art galleries and museums is a must, just down the street from the Sonata apartment is a hidden gem for art enthusiasts. The Galleria Spada is a is housed within the 16th-century Palazzo Spada and holds an impressive collection of Baroque art, featuring works by renowned artists such as Titian, Guido Reni and Caravaggio. The four galleries inside are richly decorated with artwork collected by the Cardinal Bernardino Spada (1594-1661) and his great-nephew Cardinal Fabrizio Spada (1643-1717). This remarkable museum offers a rare glimpse into a Baroque art collection since it is largely intact and is displayed in a stunning architectural setting with original frescoes and furniture.

However, the true marvel lies in the innovative forced perspective gallery designed by Francesco Borromini located in the courtyard of the Palazzo Spada. This optical illusion, where a seemingly long corridor is actually a compressed space, is a testament to Baroque creativity. The museum’s guides will even walk into the gallery to show off the architectural trickery!

Borromini’s trick of the eye at the Galleria Spada.

Tip: If you’re visiting in the winter months when it gets dark earlier, you’ll have the chance to see Borromini’s perspective gallery at night. The gallery’s rooms glimmer with beautiful lighting while the impact of the forced perspective is even more intense.

Shopping Around Campo de’ Fiori & Piazza Navona

Shopping in Rome is an eternally fine affair and we love exploring the little streets around the Sonata apartment while meandering to the nearby Campo de’ Fiori and up to Piazza Navona. Around the corner near the Sonata apartment, start off by strolling along Via dei Giubbonari, a lovely street lined with shops that leads to Campo de’ Fiori. In the morning, Campo de’ Fiori transforms into a bustling market with stalls selling colorful produce, fresh flowers and artisan goods. From there you can walk to Piazza Pasquino, a pretty square where you’ll find our Pasquino apartment, to reach Via del Governo Vecchio, another great shopping street, and Piazza Navona nearby.

Surrounded by elegant Baroque architecture, a visit to admire the fountains and buildings in Piazza Navona is always a pleasure. Whether you’re seeking beautiful Italian leather goods, unique crafts or simply indulging in some people-watching at a café, the shopping scene around this iconic Roman piazza promises a memorable and tempting adventure. Where else can you shop for beautiful jewelry inspired by Roman landmarks at Co.Ro Jewels (Via della Scrofa 52) and then pop into the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi (Piazza di San Luigi de’ Francesi) to see three masterpieces by Caravaggio?

Ponte Sisto & Trastevere

Ponte Sisto, a pedestrian bridge spanning the Tiber River in Rome, stands as a picturesque gateway to the charming Trastevere neighborhood on the opposing bank. One of the most beautiful bridges in Rome, it dates back to the 15th century. Stroll across the Ponte Sisto and stop halfway for a fine view looking toward the soaring dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. Just on the other side of the historic bridge, you’ll find Trastevere with its maze of narrow cobblestone streets, piazzas and medieval architecture.

Trastevere is a lively neighborhood that’s especially fun in the evenings for an aperitivo or dinner out. One of the perks of the Sonata is being only a short stroll away from Trastevere so you can enjoy the vibrant local culture and timeless charm, but then return to your quiet neighborhood just across the Tiber.
The Jewish Quarter

The Jewish Quarter in Rome is a historic and culturally significant district, encapsulating centuries of Jewish heritage. Established in 1555 by Pope Paul IV, the ghetto has evolved into a vibrant community within the heart of the city. Narrow cobblestone streets wind through the area, leading to the grand Synagogue of Rome and the Jewish Museum, which narrates the rich history of the Roman Jewish community. While in the area, don’t miss seeing the Fontana delle Tartarughe (Turtle Fountain) in peaceful Piazza Mattei. Curious why it has turtles?
See the Duomo without the Crowds

Seeing the beautiful Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, also called the Duomo, is a must while in Florence. However, there’s so much more to see than just the outside – even if the exterior is a marvel in itself! Be sure to go inside the Duomo, which is always free to visit, to gaze up at the marvelous 16th-century frescoes decorating the inside of Brunelleschi’s dome by the Italian Renaissance painters Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari. Even better, following the spiraling staircase to the top of the dome for a stunning view over Florence. Of if you’ve already been to the top of the dome, why not burn off a gelato or two getting a close-up view of Giotto’s bell tower, which rewards your climb with a great view – especially of the red-tiled cupola of the Duomo. Separate from the Duomo, don’t miss the chance to visit the Baptistery to see its golden mosaics or the surprisingly good Opera del Duomo Museum.

TIP: Get yourself a Brunelleschi Pass, which gives you access over 3 days to all the experiences at the Duomo with one ticket, including the Baptistery of San Giovanni, Giotto’s Bell Tower, Brunelleschi’s Dome and the Opera del Duomo Museum.

Visit Michelangelo’s Secret Space

This winter don’t miss the chance to be among the first visitors to see Michelangelo’s “secret room” at the Museum of the Medici Chapels. Discovered in 1975, these hidden away rooms with charcoal drawings created by Michelangelo Buonarroti are being opened for the first time – and just for a limited time. Only four visitors will be allowed at at time with advance reservation now until March 30, 2024.
Create Your Own Art in Florence!

While strolling around Florence, you’ll surely spot shop windows full of beautiful marbled paper. One of our favorites is Giulio Giannini e Figlio, a gorgeous shop in the Oltrarno just across from the Pitti Palace. Located in the same spot where it was founded in 1856, it’s now run by Maria Giannini, the 6th generation of the family. While the handmade paper, stationary and marbled paper covered journals make excellent gifts, you can also try your hand at creating a very special souvenir with a marbled paper workshop.

Feeling even more creative? Learn firsthand about the fresco painting process that artists like Michelangelo used and create your own masterpiece during a Florence Fresco Painting Class. Or, if you’re not feeling brave enough to try your hand at painting or marbling paper, experience the creative side of Florence on an Artisan Walk in Oltrarno.

Rome, the Eternal City, is a must-visit destination. It’s an incredible place that includes scenic views, rich history, welcoming locals and delicious food. As the Italian saying goes: “Roma, non basta una vita” (“Rome, a lifetime is not enough”). With so much to see and do, planning ahead is important, starting with which neighborhood to stay in. This is why you need to get to know the many neighborhoods in Rome. Some are suited for relaxation, while others offer phenomenal sightseeing options at your doorstep. Many of the most appealing neighborhoods in Rome include luxury vacation rentals through Vacation Perfect too. Read ahead to get an idea of what each Roman neighborhood has to offer, and then seek out a vacation rental with Italy Perfect because, without a doubt, there will be a place perfect for you.

The Spanish Steps

The Spanish Steps neighborhood has a particular grandeur that one must appreciate in person. The Spanish Steps were built in the early 1700s to connect the Trinità dei Monti church with the Spanish Square. Besides walking The Spanish Steps, you can visit the Keats-Shelley House, the Fontana della Barcaccia or Babingtons Tea Room.

Piazza Navona and Pantheon

You can’t visit Rome without spending time to see Piazza Navona and also the Pantheon. They are two of the best places in the city to get a picture of Roman life, history and architecture. The Campo de’ Fiori area is a place to get lost among the sights. It’s a bustling area with artisanal boutiques, classical architecture, delicious pizzerias and plenty more. We have several vacation rentals in the area, making it an accessible area to see all this on foot.

Jewish Quarter And Piazza Mattei

The Jewish Quarter is one of the oldest parts of Rome. This is true because the Roman Jewish community has been in the neighborhood for more than 2,000 years, making it the oldest Jewish community in Europe. It’s a small neighborhood, but it’s packed with much to see and savor. You’ll find outstanding sights like Tempio Maggiore (the Great Synagogue) and the Via del Portico d’Ottavia street, which is filled with shops and restaurants.

Monti

In the Monti neighborhood, you will find chic boutiques, quaint stores, well-stocked wine shops and innovative jewelry. History buffs will love to see the Colosseum and the more than a dozen churches lining the streets. Remember to visit the Neo-Classic Palazzo delle Esposizioni, an art museum with a hidden cafe!

Trastevere

This lively neighborhood is located across the river from Imperial Rome and was originally an Etruscan settlement. The perfect place to begin exploring Trastevere is Piazza di Santa Maria, where you can see the grand Basilica of Santa Maria. For a relaxing stroll, try exploring the botanical gardens that were once the private gardens of Palazzo Corsini.
