And while you can visit the greatest treasures of the Eternal City in its great museums or its most iconic monuments, there are subtle nods to centuries of civilization on every corner. One such example of history hiding in plain sight are Rome’s “Talking Statues,” which dot the historic center and tell a story of Renaissance life in the capital. Whether this is your first visit or you’re a Rome regular, finding these chatty figures will give you a whole new appreciation for the city.

What are the Talking Statues?

Contrary to what the name might suggest, these six sculptures aren’t equipped with voice boxes, and they won’t yell at you for not wearing a scarf (leave it to Roman grandmothers to do that). Instead, the statue parlanti are six figures that were installed around Rome during the Renaissance that became sites where local people could anonymously express political discontent by writing on their surfaces. The messages could be as simple as disagreeing with current policy at the time or they could be much more elaborate, coded messages that warring factions of the city or the Vatican were sending each other under cover of darkness. Think of them as the message boards of the day for 14th and 15th century Romans, or maybe even the first true form of social media.

The Pasquino statue in Piazza di Pasquino.

Until the 16th century, these four statues and two foundations that became known as the Congresso degli arguti, or the Congress of the Witty, were important points of political and social reference for a city undergoing radical change. The Vatican was becoming the seat of enormous power and Rome, which had been all but abandoned after the fall of the Roman Empire, was re-emerging from the Dark Ages. Even today, the talking statues maintain their role as a place where citizens can leave their opinions (mostly in flyer form) and make their voices heard. The Talking Statues continue to speak for generations of Italians and are well worth listening to for a slice of everyday Rome.

Where can you find the Talking Statues?

You don’t need to make a special trip to find the Talking Statues of Rome: indeed, most of them are on the streets in some of the most well trod sections of the city and a few are right underneath your nose.
It would take many lifetimes to see all the traces of history in Rome: by the time you finished, even more would have been written.

Make it into an easy walking tour or just keep your eye out for them while you shop or are out sightseeing!
Enjoy a charming stay in Rome at the Pasquino.
Pasquino
Perhaps the most famous of the Talking Statues is Pasquino, found in the Piazza that shares its name just a short walk from Piazza Navona. In residence since 1501, Pasquino has held the punchline for a great many of the jokes or comments left on all the statues, so much so that the comments themselves are known as “pasquinades”. If you’re lucky enough to stay right on the Piazza, which you can do at the Pasquino apartment, you might just catch modern activists tacking their latest pasquinades onto the statue in the wee hours, keeping a beloved Roman tradition alive.
The Abate Luigi statue in Rome. (credit)
Abate Luigi
Not far from the Area Sacra Torre Argentina, where Caesar was killed and cats now roam in a state of the art sanctuary, the Abate Luigi statue is the only one that tells us something about the subject. The inscription reads, “I was a citizen of ancient Rome, now everyone calls me abbot Luigi, with Pasquino and Marforio I gained fame for urban satire. I suffered offenses, disgraces and got buried, but here I found a new, safe life.”
The Marforio statue at the Musei Capitolini (credit)
Marforio
The bearded, half reclining Marforio statue is the only one you’ll have to make a beeline for, as it’s found up the Capitoline hill in the Piazza del Campidoglio. The ancient Roman statue is one of the most “talkative” of the group, and very often throughout history jokes would be written here and answered on other statues.
Rome’s Madama Lucrezia talking statue. This extraordinary event (actually considered “ordinary,” but we’ll get to that) draws millions of people to Rome and involves months of preparation at sites all over the city. For travelers planning a trip around the Jubilee, there’s a rush of excitement at being able to participate in such an important event. In the book of Leviticus, a jubilee occurred every 50 years, but in the 12th century Pope Boniface VIII decreed that it would occur every 25 years. As the centuries progressed, these Jubilee celebrations were known as “ordinary” (falling in the set period of years) or “extraordinary” if a Jubilee year was proclaimed for a particular motive. In 1933, for example, an extraordinary Jubilee was proclaimed to celebrate the 1,900th anniversary of the resurrection of Christ.

The most important feature of the Jubilee ritual is the opening and the final walling up of the “holy door” in each of the four great basilicas which the pilgrims are required to visit in Rome. These are St. Peter’s Basilica, Santa Maria Maggiore, San Giovanni in Laterano and San Paolo Fuori le Mura. The doors are opened by the Pope at the beginning of the Jubilee celebrations, which will be on December 24th, 2024, and then closed by him on January 6th, 2026. All over the world, Catholic churches dedicate a door for the Jubilee year to accommodate parishioners who are unable to make it to Rome. However, the auspiciousness of passing through one of the four holy doors is so powerful that up to 30 million pilgrims will make their way to Rome during the Jubilee year to complete this rite. Along the way, they’ll visit hundreds of sites around the city that are significant to the Catholic Church.

Plan ahead to visit St. Peter’s Basilica in 2025. And although work technically began in 2021, there are still many construction projects underway that will likely continue into the first few months of the Jubilee year. For instance, the tram lines that connect the Vatican City with other parts of Rome are in the midst of a major upgrade, and many of the most important sights around the area, including Castel Sant’Angelo and Piazza del Risorgimento, have had major detours.
Book ahead for Rome in 2025. (credit)
If you’re planning a trip to Rome next year, chances are high that you’ve seen and heard a lot of chatter about the 2025 Jubilee. This extraordinary event (actually considered “ordinary,” but we’ll get to that) draws millions of people to Rome and involves months of preparation at sites all over the city. For travelers planning a trip around the Jubilee, there’s a rush of excitement at being able to participate in such an important event. However, if you’re planning a trip to Rome that doesn’t involve Jubilee celebrations, you might find yourself making some last minute adjustments or arriving to find longer than usual lines for the places you’ve earmarked to visit. But with the right planning and a bit of background, your 2025 Roman holiday will be a truly unique experience.
The Eternal City is preparing for the Jubilee year. (credit)
What is the Jubilee?
Although we use the word to talk about different kinds of celebrations, the word jubilee actually comes from the Old Testament and was meant to describe a special year where sins, debts and other afflictions are pardoned.
(credit)
How Will it Affect Rome?
With so many people coming to Rome and circulating in such specific areas around the center of the city, there have been major preparations underway all year to get the city ready to host. All over the city, the most important monuments are being cleaned and restored, meaning that they may be covered in layers of scaffolding until complete.
While the city has promised to be ready for the opening of the Jubilee doors on December 24th, it’s a pretty massive job with inevitable delays. But one of the reasons we love returning time and again is how easy Rome’s central location and well-connected train system make it to hop around the Italian countryside. If you’ve explored Florence, tilted your head at the leaning tower in Pisa and are ready to discover some different destinations, we’re sharing some of our favorite unique day trips from Rome. Head to the Lazio coastline to enjoy a day by Gaeta’s golden beaches, relax with stunning lake views, wander among the ruins of Hadrian’s Villa, step back in time at Pompeii or see the lesser-visited side of the popular Amalfi Coast on these day trips that are all just a short train ride from Rome.

Spend a day in beautiful Gaeta.

Gaeta

Looking for a day by the sea with a healthy dose of history and charm? Head to delightfully under the radar Gaeta, located south of Rome on the Lazio coastline. With frequent regional train departures every hour from Rome, the trip takes just an hour and a half to the Formia-Gaeta station. From there, it’s only a quick taxi ride to Gaeta’s historic center. Once there, you’ll have time to enjoy the town’s pretty beaches and medieval architecture – all with gorgeous views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Spend time exploring Gaeta’s rich history, including the imposing Montagna Spaccata (Split Mountain), where legend has it the earth split during the crucifixion of Christ. Visit the ancient Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity perched on a cliff or stroll through the medieval streets to discover the Angevin Aragonese Castle. After sightseeing, relax on Serapo Beach, one of the most beautiful in the area, or head to a trattoria to enjoy a good seafood meal with sea views. A little city with a lot of history, Gaeta offers the perfect mix of history, relaxation and coastal charm, making it a fun day out from Rome.

Ancient Roman opulence at Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli. Located just 40 minutes from the city, Tivoli is easily reached by train or bus from Rome. Once there, head to Villa Adriana to see the ruins of Emperor Hadrian’s sprawling countryside estate, an impressive complex that was once a symbol of imperial luxury. Wander through the expansive grounds, where you’ll see grand palaces, lush gardens and serene reflecting pools. The villa’s architectural marvels, like the Canopus with its elegant colonnades and statues, provide a fascinating look into ancient Roman innovation.

After exploring the site, take some time to relax in Tivoli or take the chance to visit the equally stunning Villa d’Este nearby. Find out more about the magical fountains of Villa d’Este in Tivoli here.

Salerno is only an hour and a half from Rome. (credit)

Salerno

For a taste of southern Italian charm on a day trip from Rome, head south to the city of Salerno. While there are many train connections, it’s well worth the additional cost for the high-speed Frecciarossa train, which will take you from the center of Rome to Salerno in just 1 hour and 35 minutes. Why Salerno instead of the more popular Sorrento or Positano? For one, we love this history and off-the-beaten-path vibe of Salerno. The train station is also very conveniently located right in center of the city, making it easy to get around on foot. Once there, stroll through Salerno’s medieval center, being sure to visit the 11th-century Duomo with its glimmering gold crypt of Saint Matthew. Afterward, take a walk along the lungomare (waterfront), where you’ll have views looking toward the Amalfi Coast in the distance.

If you’ve been dreaming of the Amalfi Coast, Salerno is also the gateway to the eastern side of this famous coastline. For a taste of the Amalfi Coast on a doable day trip from Rome, you can easily catch the Travelmar ferry only a few blocks from the Salerno train station.
Explore the medieval city of Gaeta on a day trip from Rome.
Rome certainly has enough historic sites, museums and charm to keep you endlessly captivated.
(credit)
Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli
While Rome is a treasure trove of ancient Roman history, there are archaeological sites outside the city center that are perfect for a day trip.
We recommend taking a ferry to nearby Vietri sul Mare, known for its handmade ceramics tradition. Spend time browsing in the local shops, where you’ll find one-of-a-kind ceramic pieces that make perfect souvenirs. Or, head to the charming fishing village of Cetara for a memorable seafood lunch in one of its many tempting restaurants, followed by a swim beneath the town’s historic watchtower.
Explore the ancient city of Pompeii on a day trip from Rome.
