They can include everything from marinated vegetables, polenta with seafood to savory meatballs or grilled fish. These bite-sized snacks have long been a way for Venetians to enjoy a light meal with friends, especially before dinner. It’s an informal, social experience, where locals gather around the bar, chatting and sipping on a glass of wine or prosecco.

The Cicchetti Tradition

Cicchetti are closely tied to Venice’s tradition of ombra, which refers to a small glass of wine enjoyed with friends. The word ombra means “shadow,” hearkening back to when wine sellers would move with the shadow of St. Mark’s bell tower to keep cool while selling their wine.
When in Venice, there’s no better way to experience the local flavor—literally and culturally—than by having cicchetti. These small, tasty bites are an essential part of Venetian life, often enjoyed with a glass of wine or a spritz during aperitivo. Whether you’re nibbling on bruschetta topped with fresh seafood, cured meats or creamy spreads, cicchetti are quite literally the delicious antipasto to Venice’s rich culinary traditions.

What Are Cicchetti?
Cicchetti (pronounced chi-KET-tee) are Venice’s answer to tapas – small, shareable plates typically served in local wine bars called bacari.

(credit)

While the allure of Italy’s classic romantic cities is undeniable, the journey to explore its heart also beckons us towards lesser-known gems that promise unforgettable experiences. Italy remains simultaneously vivid yet endearingly tender, clamorous yet impossibly elegant, complex yet endlessly welcoming. You can’t help but be swept up into the rhythm of this place and its ability to transform profoundly during even a short train ride. Indeed, Italy’s delightful contradictions may be the very thing that makes it an ideal romantic destination: just enough variety, just enough luxury, just enough adventure.

In this itinerary, we’ll whisk you away to Venice, Florence, Rome and Sorrento, unveiling their enduring attractions while also suggesting off-the-beaten-path treasures in smaller cities and towns. You might find yourselves making little unplanned detours along the way, but doesn’t that just add to the romance of it all? And besides, when you’re with someone you love, you’re never truly lost!

Stop 1: Venice

Venice and romance go hand in hand! (credit)

Joseph Brodsky wrote that “Venice is eternity itself.” You could certainly spend an eternity in Venice just wandering through narrow streets that beg you to hold onto your loved one’s hand, or exploring the many islands that dot the Venetian lagoon. Whether you’re there for the masks of Carnevale, the art of the Biennale or just to soak it all in, Venice will never fail to seduce you. While you won’t be alone in exploring the city in peak season, you don’t need to walk far to escape the crowds. See the Rialto bridge and sights in San Marco, then spend time wandering the quieter, winding streets of Dorsoduro and Cannaregio.

If you’re flying from abroad, you’ll more than likely arrive in one of the major hubs of Rome or Milan, and catch a connecting flight to Venice. Or if you’re arriving by train, the Santa Lucia station waits in one of the most dramatic scenes you can imagine. Here is where the magic of Venice begins. Once you arrive at the banks of the Grand Canal you’ll forget that the rest of the world exists. You’re in La Serenissima and the rest just slips away. If you’re on the hunt for something sweet, visit Treviso, the birthplace of tiramisù and home to its own storied canals and craftspeople. Wine lovers will not be disappointed by a day trip to Conegliano, one of the three towns awarded the coveted DOCG status for their Prosecco production. A trip to each takes about an hour from Venice’s main train station and is well worth a detour.

The neighboring Friuli Venezia-Giulia region, also the easternmost point in Italy, may seem to share more in common with Vienna than Rome, but it is distinctly Italian. A trip to Trieste is a chance to taste some of the best coffee in Italy, with the legendary Illy brand headquartered in the heart of the city. Wine lovers will think they’ve discovered treasure in hills of Collio, home to some of the most spectacular vineyards in Europe. And if you should find yourself in the northeastern city of Udine, your ears won’t be playing tricks on you: the local dialect borrows as much from Slavic languages as from Italian, and its all just as lyrical. A trip to Friuli takes upwards of two hours from Venice on the train.

Stop 2: Florence

Stroll over the Ponte Vecchio in Florence. (credit)

Florence, with its Renaissance artistry, intimate streets and the timeless beauty of the Arno River, exudes an unparalleled romantic atmosphere that has inspired lovers for centuries. The Birthplace of the Renaissance is as lovely as you can imagine and full of spots to take it all in. Find a lovely place to enjoy a Spritz, basking in the golden hour as it dapples the roofs and plays tricks on you on the surface of the Arno.

Florence is entirely walkable, and small enough to wander without ever getting too far afield. But between the Boboli Gardens, the Uffizi Gallery and the Ponte Vecchio, you may not even realize that an entire day (or week) has gone by. It’s all a bit better by night, lit up and ever so slightly more magical. If such a thing exists. Trains are by far the most efficient way to travel between the two cities, with less than an hour separating the gardens of Florence from the red roofs of Bologna. The latter is teeming with character and bursting with flavors: tuck into handmade tortellini or massive mortadella, and then walk it off hand in hand under the miles of covered sidewalks that make the city feel intimate despite its size. The rebellious soul of Bologna feels light years away from the genteel sophistication of Florence, but the contrast makes each feel even more special.

Explore towns like Perugia on a day trip from Florence. This imposing hilltop city is the home of Umbria Jazz, the yearly festival that fills the streets with music and has hosted some of the most famous musicians in the world. Perugia is also home to Perugina chocolate, whose factory you can visit and learn about the incredible love story at the heart of the company. Walking through it is a sensory overload in the very best way: every corner of it emanates a beauty that will never be replicated anywhere, at any other time. And there’s much more to see and do than the monuments or museums that you might have learned about in school. Rome is in the midst of its own renaissance, and the city is bursting with new restaurants, museums and experiences that once again prove that eternity really is built on constant reinvention. If you’re already in the mood for love, Rome will sweep you off your feet all over again. When you’re ready to call it a day, head home to a relaxing vacation rental in the heart of Rome.

If you want to explore …

The glow of sunset in Naples. One of the most vibrant cities in Italy, Naples is an exciting place to visit. Connected to Rome with high speed trains that take a little more than an hour, Naples hugs its eponymous bay and rises above the hills like a picture frame on the entire Mediterranean. Over the past decade, it’s undergone a significant facelift and has become a fantastic place to visit for day trippers traveling by land or sea. With so much to see, from the Palazzo del Plebiscito to the Spanish Quarter to the hilltop palace of Capodimonte, it’s easy to spend days soaking it all in. If you haven’t quite fallen under its spell, the famous Neapolitan pizza will put you in a delightful trance.

Stop 4: Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast

Enjoy all the allure of the Amalfi Coast.
Dreaming of a romantic grand tour of Italy?
Check out our romantic Venice vacation apartment rentals to plan your perfect stay.
Plan a romantic stay in Venice with Italy Perfect
If you want to explore …
There is a whole world within reach of Venice, including some of the most culturally diverse areas in all of Italy.
Check out our Florence vacation rentals to find your own romantic room with a view.
Start your day on the charming terrace at Casetta Bonsi in Florence.
If you want to explore …

Foodies will find paradise in Bologna, home to the oldest university in the world and a vibrant culinary culture.
(credit)
Across the border in Umbria, Perugia is one of those places that you’ll want to keep hidden from all of your friends when you come home and they ask for the highlight of your trip. This imposing hilltop city is the home of Umbria Jazz, the yearly festival that fills the streets with music and has hosted some of the most famous musicians in the world. Perugia is also home to Perugina chocolate, whose factory you can visit and learn about the incredible love story at the heart of the company. Don’t forget to pick up some freshly made baci (kisses) from the Perugina store and stick around for the night to watch the sunset over the medieval skyline.
Stop 3: Rome
A roman holiday is perfect for romance! (credit)
No matter how many times you might see it, there’s nothing quite like visiting Rome.
(credit)
Since all roads lead there, Rome is connected to almost every other city in Italy, by either regional trains or the high speed Frecciarossa or Italo trains.
(credit)
With a captivating blend of natural beauty, culture and unparalleled romance, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast are the perfect final stop. This coastal haven is a dream backdrop for a romantic stay with its dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear waters and picturesque villages clinging to the mountainsides. Stroll hand in hand along the winding streets, savoring the aroma of lemon groves and indulging in fresh Mediterranean cuisine. The Amalfi Coast’s charming towns like Positano and Ravello are ideal for sunset dinners overlooking the sea, while Sorrento’s old-world charm adds a touch of elegance. Whether you’re sipping limoncello on a terrace, exploring hidden coves or simply basking in the warmth of each other’s company, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast are an irresistible romantic escape. (credit)

Every year, travelers from around the world head to Venice to make their own memories of the most unique city in the world. It’s impossible not to be enchanted by the narrow alleyways, eclectic architecture and, of course, the hundreds of canals that meander through the city. Without the iconic waterways, and the daily rhythm that they inspire, Venice might be just another city. Instead, it is a dream – suspended in time and floating in a universe all its own.

It may seem strange, but visitors to Venice often forget—or neglect to notice at all—that the city was planted in the middle of a large body of water. Venice is surrounded by many islands that have come to life in this incredibly unique environment. The development, history and culture of the area is an interdependent story that can really only be told by venturing beyond the confines of Venice. Many of the islands are uninhabited by humans and serve as a sanctuary for the hundreds of animal species that call this area home. While others have maintained their centuries-old traditions of artisanal craft work and in the process have become popular travel destinations. Still others are a living reminder of the first human settlements in the area, or the agricultural practices that continue to sustain the population today. Each is the story of a world unto itself and yet also integral to the bigger story of the Venetian Lagoon.

A historic map of Venice and surrounding islands published in 1704. The lagoon islands, including Venice, account for less than ten percent of this surface. The vast majority of the lagoon is composed of mud flats, tidal shallows and salt marshes, making it the largest wetland in the entire Mediterranean Basin. Because of its position and connection to the Adriatic Sea, the lagoon can see incredible variations in the water level. The most famous of these tidal peaks, the acqua alta, occurs in Venice between October and January and can cause flooding in parts of the city.

A stunning view of the Venetian lagoon from the International Space Station. (credit)

Surprisingly, the Venetian Lagoon was only formed in the last seven thousand years, when the final vestiges of the Ice Age flooded the Adriatic coastal plain. Indeed, it is the only surviving waterway from an estuary system that extended from Ravenna to Trieste during the ancient Roman period, and its importance during that period was critical. By the sixth century, tribes were carving up land in what would become Europe, and Romanized people took shelter on the islands, confident that the Huns would not cross the waters to conquer them. Those first settlers perhaps saw the potential for growth in a most unlikely land, as the naturally protected conditions of the lagoon were an essential factor in the rise of the Venetian Republic and its mighty maritime empire.

The church of Santa Fosca – one of the beautiful churches on Torcello. (credit)

However, the Venice that we know today didn’t even exist during those first years (or centuries, for that matter): its unique construction upon a mass of wood and mud pilings (known as caranto) would develop over the 1,600 years since its founding in 421AD and the 118 islands that became La Serenissima would take years to complete. Consequently, the earliest settlements in the lagoon were on the island of Torcello, which has evidence of being inhabited since the Roman Era. While serving as a shelter for those fleeing the Huns, the population of this tiny island is said to have reached 20,000 by the 10th century and it was a critically important trading point with Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire. The rise of the Venetian Republic, along with the erosion of Torcello’s natural harbors, meant that by the 15th century the population had dwindled to less than 1,000.

Today, visiting Torcello feels like stepping back into the past: the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta houses impeccably preserved Byzantine mosaics and the idyllic garden restaurant of Locanda Cipriani is as welcoming now as it was when Ernest Hemingway took up residence there.

Walking through a vineyard on Torcello. (credit)

The Gardens and Vineyards of the Venetian Lagoon

While the islands that make up Venice might be shaped like a fish, they’re far from the only catch in the lagoon. Traditional cuisine depends largely on the wetlands: the two most important local fish, sardele (pilchards) and sardon (anchovies), come from the shallow waters of the lagoon. Venice’s most famous dish, bigoli in salsa, takes its unmistakable flavor from local anchovies that form an unctuous base for thick ropes of pasta. A visit to the legendary Rialto Market in the early morning is one of the best ways to see the incredible variety of seafood found in the lagoon (as well as soak in the atmosphere of early morning, mostly tourist-free Venice).

The natural beauty of the lagoon on Sant’Erasmo.

But it isn’t just local fish that you’ll find overflowing from stalls and tables at the market: vegetables from the island of Sant’Erasmo, known as “the vegetable garden of Venice,” are famous for good reason.
Don’t miss exploring the Venetian Lagoon while in Venice.
(credit)
The Not-So-Ancient Origins of Modern-Day Venice
Known in Italian as the Laguna di Venezia and in Venetian as Łaguna de Venesia, the Lagoon covers an area of more than 200 square miles on the northeastern border of the Veneto region.
Although there are arguments among Venetian purists and historians about the exact date, most contend that the first Carnival followed the military victory of the Venetian Republic over the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrico di Treven, in 1162. However, the first document that mentions laxatio carnis (the Latin precursor to our modern word) actually dates from 1094 and was signed by the Venetian Doge Vitale Falier. Either way, by the 12th century Venice enjoyed wealth, military might and nearly unfettered access to the rest of the world via the sea. The “Most Serene Republic” was in a golden era, and there was much to celebrate. In this climate, Carnival became a months-long affair that originally started on Boxing Day (December 26) and would last until Shrove Tuesday, which could be three months later.

Carnival became a particularly important part of Venetian life, in large part thanks to one of its most important ingredients: masks. Because of the rigid social class system in Venice at the time, it was nearly impossible for the nobility to walk around unnoticed. Just as it was unthinkable that a member of the lower classes would be allowed in any of the gilded palaces along the canals. During Carnival, however, people could become anything they wanted and move in circles that they would never have dreamed of otherwise. An air of freedom pervaded the city, and it inspired many of the great artistic legends that give Venice its particular charm. Indeed, without Carnival, there would hardly have been the stories of Casanova or the tales from the Commedia dell’Arte.

Traditional carnival in Venice costumes. As early as the 13th century, laws were passed forbidding gambling whilst masked, though the practice continued for centuries. By the 14th century, masked people were prohibited from visiting convents or monasteries, and by 1511 female prostitutes were forced to petition the government to control the preponderance of masked men that were taking all of their business. That the solution in that last case was to allow female prostitutes to appear topless in public gives some insight into just how wild the republic had become.

As the Renaissance engulfed the kingdoms and republics that would become Italy, Carnival reached its apex: celebrations would begin as early as October and could last until April of the following year. Carousing was becoming the norm, so much so that the Catholic Church had to ban festivities on holy days as a way to try to control the city. By that time, however, Venice had become so synonymous with debauchery that it was flooded with international visitors, who were hardly bothered by the conventions of local clergy. But Napoleon Bonaparte’s victory over the Venetian Republic in 1797 made all of the piecemeal efforts to control Carnival a moot point. After he assumed power over the city, Carnival was banned and the use of masks was strictly prohibited. The party was over.

Elaborate historic costumes in Venice. It wasn’t until the late 1960s that community groups in Venice started to push for the festival to return as a way to boost tourism for the city. Carnival officially returned to Venice in 1979 and in so doing, resurrected many of the traditions that have long since disappeared in the rest of the world. This absence is why so many of the costumes and masks date from the time of the Venetian Republic, making Carnival not just a great party but a snapshot in history.

Enjoy carnival celebrations in Italy this year!
(Ralf Steinberger from Milan, Berlin + Munich, Italy + Germany, CC BY 2.0)
For almost two centuries, Carnival in Venice existed either in popular legend or in very small, private parties that took place behind closed doors.
(Shesmax, CC BY-SA 4.0)
The Venice Carnival Today (and Tomorrow)
While Carnival may still carry the image of a debaucherous (and expensive) affair, its become much more inclusive and artistic in the years since its revival. Recent editions have included competitions for masks, fashion shows and art installations, many of which are free to attend. The 2023 Carnival, titled “Take Your Time for the Original Signs” will take place from February 4-21 and is dedicated to the zodiac calendar as well as the four elements of Earth, Wind, Fire and Water.
As in previous years, the Arsenale hosts an enormous show that takes place on the water, and this year marks the return of the masked float parades on the mainland as well as different islands in the Venetian lagoon. There are different activities, parades and events scheduled for every day of the Carnival, all of which are listed in English and Italian on the official website. Many activities are entirely free, but the more exclusive galas and costume balls are also available to book.
The architecture of Venice on a Carnival mask. (Ralf Steinberger from Milan, Berlin + Munich, Italy + Germany, CC BY 2.0)
While Venice is proudly opening its arms to tourists and revelers alike to celebrate Carnival, this year will mark the first time that visitors will have to pay an entry fee if they’re planning to only stay for one day. The fee, which will run anywhere from $3-10, is meant to protect the city and preserve the efforts made towards sustainability and responsible travel. Of course, the perfect solution is to settle in for a longer stay in one of our Venice vacation rentals and those extra fees won’t apply to you. The measures are all part of a government effort called #EnjoyRespectVenezia which was founded in 2017 to raise awareness among visitors of the fragile ecosystem of the city as well as the need to preserve it for residents.

Getting to Venice and traveling around the city during Carnival is actually quite simple, as trains run into the central Santa Lucia station, and from there, gondolas, vaporetti (water buses) or taxis go into just about every nook and cranny you can imagine. The official website for Carnival has an entire section dedicated to getting around during Carnival and includes information about the acqua alta, or high tides. But if you’ve decided to take the trip of a lifetime and head to Venice for Carnival, you’ll spend the majority of your day walking through scenes that will transport you to another time. All you need is to book your apartment, get a pair of shoes made for walking and, of course, don’t forget your mask!
The post Carnival in Venice Past and Present appeared first on Italy Perfect Travel Blog.",
